Secy. Kim Jong Il guides cultural heritage inheritance

Pyongyang, June 15 (KCNA) - Secretary Kim Jong Il guided the work of inheriting and developing the nation's cultural heritages on Saturday. He was accompanied by secretaries of the Workers' Party of Korea Central Committee Choe Thae Bok and Kim Ki Nam and Vice-Premier of the Administration Council Jang Chol. He first saw the folk dance suite "people in the walled city of Pyongyang" newly produced by the State National Art Troupe and learned how the art troupe was inheriting and developing folk dance and national music. The performers vividly represented the justice- and patriotic-minded people in the walled city of Pyongyang as well as beautiful national dance and music. He expressed great satisfaction, highly praised and thanked the creating staff and artistes of the art troupe for successfully producing the unique Korean-style folk dance suite. He said it was of great importance in patriotic education to inform the people of fine culture and customs created by their ancestors while in national defence and industrious labor. He put forward important tasks to carry forward the nation's cultural traditions properly. The consistent policy of the Workers' Party of Korea in inheriting and developing the nation's cultural heritages is to observe the principles of historicism and modernism and guard against restorationism and national nihilism, he noted, adding that as a result of strict observation of these principles, the nation's fine culture established by the ancestors is genuinely serving the working masses in the Workers' Party Age. Time-honored dance movements and melodies were found out and represented to the tastes of the times, he said, adding that this is very significant in view of esthetics and inheritance and development of classics. He urged the workers engaged in literature and art and all other sectors to strive to keep the nation's fine cultural heritages properly and help the people to have a higher sense of national pride and honor. He said that the unique principles and methods applied in the production of revolutionary operas in Korea should be introduced in the folk dance suite so that it could be reminiscent of the Workers' Party Age. Literary and art works should be of eternal value and highest quality as they constitute the nation's valuable cultural heritage, he said. He called on the creating staff and artistes to be true creators and defenders of socialist literature and art by producing larger numbers of popular works that meet the demands of the times and strike the fancy of the Korean people.

Party given at Russian Consulate General

Pyongyang, June 15 (KCNA) -- A party was given at the Russian Consulate General in Chongjin, Korea, on Saturday to mark the National Day of Russia. Invited to the party were Vice-Chairman of the North Hamgyong Provincial Administrative and Economic Committee Hyon Tong Hyok and other officials concerned. The Russian Consul General and other officials of the Consulate General were present at the party. Speeches were exchanged on the occasion.

Murder of civilian, political trick of Kim Young Sam

Pyongyang, June 15 (KCNA) -- The South Korean Federation of University Student Councils (Hanchongryon) said that the murder of a civilian in the campus of Hanyang University in Seoul on June 4 is a political trick to stamp out "Hanchongryon." "Hanchongryon" revealed that the murderer who beat an unidentified citizen to death was a police cat's-paw who disguised himself as a student. The revelation is attracting the attention of fair public opinion and urging people to sharpen vigilance against the dastardly plot of the "civilian" regime.

Just cause of "Hanchongryon" is sure to win

Pyongyang, June 15 (KCNA) -- Rodong Sinmun today stresses that the final victory is in store for the South Korean Federation of University Student Councils (Hanchongryon) fighting for the just cause. The paper in a signed article says: "Hanchongryon", a legal organization of one million students in south Korea, has waged the vigorous struggle for independence, democratization and reunification against the United States and fascism, greatly contributing to the development of the national reunification movement from the first days of its formation. The Kim Young Sam fascist clique have alleged that "Hanchongryon" is a "pro-north organisation benefitting the enemy" because it aspires after anti-U.S. independence and demands reunification by confederal formula and the abolition of the "National Security Law". The fascist clique invented the death of a riot policeman and the death of a young civilian by a cat's-paw of the "Agency for National Security Planning" and blamed Hanchongryon for it. This is intended to brand "Hanchongryon" as a "group of hooligans and murderers" and crack down on and stamp out it. It shows that the puppets' "operation of obliterating 'Hanchongryon'" has reached a reckless stage. The youth and students in south Korea should firmly defend "Hanchongryon" with a more active struggle, not daunted by the threat of Kim Young Sam fascist murderer. No one can block the struggle of "Hanchongryon" for just cause.

Invariable ambition for aggression

Pyongyang, June 15 (KCNA) -- The U.S. joint chiefs of staff headquarters recently announced a "report on future strategy". Rodong Sinmun today condemns the announcement as an act of going against the trend of detente and a wanton challenge to the people's desire for peace. The "report" raised the "maintenance of overwhelming military power" and the continued overseas presence of the US. troops as the "basic strategy of the U.S. army in the 21st century". The news analyst says: The "strategy" is one for aggression based on the arrogance of the United States styling itself as the "only superpower". It is aimed at intensifying the military arbitrariness in the future. The U.S. military bellicose forces are trying to set in motion in the future leading to the 21st century the "new military strategy", the "strategy for the solution of regional disputes" which was declared as the state strategy after the end of the Cold War. In a bid to carry into practice the "strategy for the solution of regional disputes", they are taking a serious view of the "strategy of forward deployment" of the U.S. forces. They are now intending to direct the main spearhead of their strategy of aggression to the Korean Peninsula and realize their policy for showdown of strength. They are also trying to realize their ambition for domination over the whole of Korea and, at the same time, make it a breakthrough in promoting the "strategy of future". This is why they are intending to keep their forces 100,000 strong in south Korea and its surroundings. If the United States continues stifling the DPRK with strength, we have no alternative but to take a self-defensive step to cope with it. We have an option and a measure to defend the sovereignty, interests and security of the country.

For what does Japan's military assistance to U.S. seek?

Pyongyang, June 15 (KCNA) -- Japan's military assistance to the United States is mainly aimed to take a road of overseas aggression with the U.S. backing. Rodong Sinmun says this in a signed article today. The daily notes: The main offensive orientation of the U.S. world strategy is the Asia-Pacific region. It is because the the economic and military strategic importance in the region has been increased unprecedentedly since the end of the Cold War. The keynote of Japan's military assistance to the United States is a wholesale support to the operation of the U.S. forces in Japan in case of "emergency" in the area surrounding Japan. The "emergency" around Japan on the part of the U.S. and Japanese reactionaries means "crisis" and "disputes" in certain areas and countries of the Asia-Pacific region. The U.S. forces stationed in Japan are a shock brigade for the U.S. policy of aggression. So, Japan's assistance means a joint operation with the United States in a certain area of the world. Japan is prohibited by law to conduct overseas military activities and to have the right to warring. If the Japanese reactionaries are to take a road of military overseas aggression, they must have a legitimate condition. To this end, they are bringing forward military assistance to the U.S. in case of "emergency" around Japan. The first target of it will be the Korean Peninsula. Japan's military assistance is bringing the militarist and aggressive danger into bolder relief. But the Japanese reactionaries' moves will be nothing but a suicidal act.

The news analyst says: "Hanchongryon" support to the proposal for reunification through confederacy is based on the present requirement that to reunify the country in the form of confederation is the only way to achieve the cause of reunification peacefully in conformity with the aspirations and will of the nation under the condition that the different ideas and systems exist in the north and the south of Korea. Anyone who truly worries about the destiny of the country and the nation and has the stand of national independence and patriotism in south Korea is demanding the withdrawal of the U.S. troops and a stop to the U.S. interference in the Korean question. "Hanchongryon" is calling for opposing the united states, following such trend of times. The south Korean puppets are branding the praise of the north by the students under "Hanchongryon" and their demand for the dismantlement of the "National Security Law" and the repressive tools as an "act of benefitting the enemy". We can neither pardon nor remain an overlooker to the puppets' brutal suppression of "Hanchongryon" with clamour for its dissolution. The Kim Young Sam fascist clique must stop at once the campaign and offensive to suppress and obliterate "Hanchongryon". Minju Joson says that those who are joining in or siding with the campain to stamp out "Hanchongryon" that is turning out for the just cause, togther with Kim Young Sam who is doomed to ruin, will face a stern trial by history and the people.

Indictment of north side headquarters of Pomchonghakryon

Pyongyang, June 15 (KCNA) -- The north side headquarters of the National Alliance of Youth and Students for the Country's Reunification (Pomchonghakryon) published the following indictment on June 14 denouncing the Kim Young Sam group's scorched-earth operation to destroy the South Korean Federation of University Student Councils (Hanchongryon): The north side headquarters of "Pomchonghakryon" makes public this indictment, bitterly denouncing the Kim Young Sam group's brutal suppression of "Hanchongryon" as a rare fascist dictatorship to fascistize campus and slaughter democracy and a total challenge to the movement of youth and students for the reunification of the country. The fascist clique are labelling the students affiliated with "Hanchongryon" who staged demonstrations as "mobs". This is a shameless act like a thief crying "stop thief " as has been admitted at home and abroad, "Hanchongryon" is a legitimate organization of one million students of south Korea aspiring after independence, democracy and reunification. However, the Kim Young Sam group have set in motion more than 20,000 combat police and armoured tear gas launchers and other repressive equipment against 10,000 students with empty hands who were to hold a peaceful rally. The puppets are now resorting to conceivable means and methods to stifle "Hanchongryon" standing in the van of the movement for independence, democracy and reunification by branding it as "violent forces benefitting the enemy". The target to be dissolved in south Korea today is not "Hanchongryon" but the Kim Young Sam fascist regime that is crumbling, grudged by the people for its flunkeyist treachery, dependence on outsiders and irregularities, and the puppet "Agency for National Security Planning" backing it with all smear plots. By obliterating "Hanchongryon" the fascist clique is trying to put down the daily growing anti-Kim Young Sam struggle and emerge from the crisis of ruin. The Kim Young Sam group must know that the manoeuvres to find a wayout with the suppression of "Hanchongryon" and other patriotic pro-reunification, democratic forces is a foolish daydream. They must clearly see the trend of the times, stop the sword-brandishing crackdown on "Hanchongryon" at once, release all the arrested students without delay and step down as demanded by the students and people of south Korea. "Pomchonghakryon", around which all the students in the north, the south and overseas, the heroes of a reunified country, are rallied close, is powerfully conducting the nationwide movement for reunification. "Pomchonghakryon" will wage a more vigorous struggle to make Kim Young Sam pay for the crimes he committed against the movement of the youth and students for national reunification a thousand times, bring him before the court of history and achieve a reunified country in the form of confederation in our generation.

Missile talks between DPRK and USA delegations

Pyongyang, June 15 (KCNA) -- Missile talks took place in New York from June 11 to 13, 1997 between the delegation of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea headed by the Departmental Director in Charge of U.S. Affairs of the Foreign Ministry and the delegation of the United States of America headed by Robert Einhorn, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Political and Military Affairs of the State Department. The two sides agreed in principle to continue the missile talks.
