Attention to situation on Korean Peninsula called for

Pyongyang, July 28 (KCNA) -- The Angolan Council of opposition parties sent a letter to the UN Secretary General on July 17 during the month of international solidarity with the Korean people. The letter expressed concern over the fact that Korea divided by foreign forces has not yet been reunified till now when the Cold War has come to an end and that the tension in this area is being aggravated and, thus, the danger of a new war is growing day by day. If the reunification of Korea is to be achieved and peace be ensured, the U.S. troops should be withdrawn from south Korea and the armistice agreement be replaced by a peace agreement, the letter noted. It expressed the expectation that the United Nations will pay deep attention to the situation on the Korean Peninsula and make all efforts to dissolve the "UN Command" in south Korea.

Japan urged to act with discretion

Pyongyang, July 28 (KCNA) -- The spokesman for the Korean Asia-Pacific Peace Committee issued a statement to the press Sunday as regards Japan's moves to finalize the "guidelines for defence cooperation with the United States" behind the curtain of dialogue. The statement said: Confidential working-level contacts have been held in Beijing between the DPRK and Japan over the issue of improving the relations between the two countries, and some affirmative agreements have been reached. Politicians of the ruling parties of the two countries expressed their willingness to solve pending matters including humanitarian issues on good terms. At this very juncture, some Japanese forces are scheming to railroad "defence guidelines" through diet, clamouring about "threat from north Korea" and "emergency on the Korean Peninsula". They are taking issue with the DPRK defence forces to defend peace, talking about "danger" and "emergency". This is a product of their hostile policy toward the DPRK. If Japan truly wants to solve the issue of improving its relations with the DPRK on good terms and ensure a lasting peace and stability in the far east and Asia, it must throw away the double-dealing tactics against the dialogue partner, which is being pursued behind the curtain of dialogue, and approach dialogue and pending matters with reason. Our resolution to establish good-neighbourhood with Japan is consistent and invariable. Accordingly, Japan's attitude toward us is the key to the solution of the issue of improving the DPRK-Japan relations and pending matters. Japanese political forces should not forget the lesson of history from Japan's militarism and overseas aggression. It is high time that they made a clear estimation of the obtaining situation and interests of Japan and behaved with discretion. We will sharply watch their moves going against the development of relations between the two countries and strongly cope with them.

Review of Rodong Sinmun

Pyongyang, July 28 (KCNA) -- Rodong Sinmun today carries a report that Secretary Kim Jong Il, Supreme Commander of the Korean People's Army, visited the Women's Multiple Rocket System Battalion of KPA Unit No. 821 Sunday to mark the 44th war victory day, and a picture he posed for with servicewomen. He, together with KPA soldiers, enjoyed an art performance "Songs of Eternal Victory" given by the merited choir of the KPA song and dance ensemble to mark this day, reports the paper. On this anniversary, floral baskets were laid before the statues of President Kim Il Sung by civilians and servicemen across the country, members of the Pyongyang mission of the National Democratic Front of South Korea and overseas compatriots, and officers and men of the KPA three services visited the Kumsusan Memorial Palace to pay homage to the President, according to the paper. Given in the paper are accounts of events held in different countries to honor the memory of President Kim Il Sung on his third death anniversary. Econews of the paper deals with achievements made in railway transport. It is reported in the paper that an evening of Pyongyang youth and students was held and the "Jonsung Cup" sports tournament opened to celebrate the war victory day. "Three principles, invariable principles for national reunification" is the title of an article of the daily. The paper in a commentary denounces the Kim Young Sam group for the repressive moves against the South Korean Federation of University Student Councils. Different organizations and figures in south Korea have criticized such moves, the paper says. Printed in the paper is information issued by the joint Secretariat of the National Alliance for the Country's Reunification as regards a decision on opening the 8th Pan-National Rally in Panmunjom around August 15 this year marking the 25th anniversary of the historic July 4 Joint Statement. Appearing in it is also a statement published by the spokesman for the Korean Asia-Pacific Peace Committee in connection with some Japanese quarters' moves to retrogressively revise "guidelines for Japan-U.S. defence cooperation" allegedly to provide against the DPRK.

Student repression can never be pardoned

Pyongyang, July 28 (KCNA) -- Rodong Sinmun today accuses the Kim Young Sam regime of trying harder than before to obliterate the South Korean Federation of University Student Councils (Hanchongryon). The puppet supreme public prosecutor's office called a "meeting of security-related officials" from across south Korea on July 25, where the office announced that it would guide an increasing number of students to secede from "Hanchongryon" by the end of this month and that the students who remain would be punished from August 1 in a phased way on charges of involvement in the "enemy-benefiting organisation." The news analyst says: This shows the Kim Young Sam regime has started action to isolate "Hanchongryon" from the masses and disunite it from within. The Kim Young Sam regime can never be justified in branding "Hanchongryon" as "benefiting the enemy." "Hanchongryon" as the successor to the "national council of student representatives" is a legitimate organisation of one million students in south Korea and a democratic autonomous body embracing justice- and patriotic-minded students. Their call for independence, democracy and reunification is a just and righteous act that reflects the unanimous desire of the south Korean people. It can never be criminalized. What must be dissolved in south Korea is not "Hanchongryon" but Kim Young Sam regime, which is breathing its last, forsaken by the people for its misrule and irregularities, and the puppet Agency for National Security Planning, which backs the regime with all sorts of intrigues.

Rodong Sinmun on three principles of national reunification

Pyongyang, July 28 (KCNA) -- The three principles of independence, peaceful reunification and great national unity advanced by President Kim Il Sung are a basic guideline which must be invariably adhered to in the national reunification movement and an eternal reunification programme common to the nation, says Rodong Sinmun in a signed article today. The principle of independence is vital to the honor and destiny of the country and nation. Anyone who truly wants the reunification of the country must not depend upon the outside forces obstructive of reunification but rely on the internal force of the nation and take the stand of achieving reunification in an independent way. The principle of peaceful reunification is aimed at solving the issue of reunification in conformity with the desire and interests of our nation. National reunification is a national cause to remove the present tragic division and instability in which the north and the south stand militarily opposed to each other and to realise a lasting peace and stability of the country. Accordingly, there can be no other choice but to solve the reunification issue peacefully. The principle of great national unity is a banner of national reunification and a guideline whereby to achieve the reunification of the country by the united efforts of the whole nation. Under the present condition of Korea in which there exist different ideas and systems in the north and the south, reunification cannot be achieved without the great national unity transcending differences in ideology and system. The three principles are immovable principles and banner of national reunification which the Korean nation must invariably hold fast to in the struggle to achieve the reunification of the country however the situation on the Korean Peninsula may change in the future.
