Pyongyang, July 30 (KCNA) -- The south Korean "civilian" fascist clique, at the puppet Seoul district court on Monday, staged a trial of students prosecuted for the inauguration of the fifth-term South Korean Federation of University Student Councils (Hanchongryon) and demanded prison terms ranging from two to five years for twelve students, according to a radio report from Seoul. The trial was the first for 289 students referred to trial and the fascist clique have decided to conduct a trial of some ten students almost every day to finish all the trials by the end of August, said the radio. In this way, the Kim Young Sam clique want to prevent activities of students and people which are likely to be conducted with the approach of the anniversary of National Liberation, August 15. But it is a foolish intention.

Soldiers' meeting marking 70th anniversary of CPLA

Pyongyang, July 30 (KCNA)-- A soldiers' meeting was sponsored by the Ministry of the People's Armed Forces at the April 25 House of Culture on July 29 on the occasion of the 70th birth anniversary of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (CPLA). Present on invitation were Chinese Ambassador to Korea Wan Yongxiang, military attache of the Chinese Embassy Liu Jianhua and Embassy officials. Speaking at the meeting, Ri Yong Su, Vice-Minister of the People's Armed Forces, said that under the leadership of the Communist Party of China headed by the respected comrade Jiang Zemin the CPLA is firmly guaranteeing the socialist construction with Chinese characteristics by force of arms by waging a vigorous struggle to strengthen and develop the army into strong revolutionary armed forces fully prepared ideologically and politically and in military technique in the idea and principle of the leaders of the old generation in the army building. Under the wise leadership of Secretary Kim Jong Il, the officers and men of the Korean People's Army (KPA) will make all efforts to consolidate and develop generation after generation the precious Korea-China friendship established by President Kim Il Sung together with the leaders of the old generation of China, he added. Liu Jianhua said that under the leadership of the Supreme Commander Kim Jong Il the KPA has grown to be a revolutionary army remaining unfailingly loyal to the Party and the people and firmly defending the Korean-style socialism while effecting a new upswing in the combatant training and the construction of the major objects through the intensified political and ideological work. China, he noted, will in the future, too, fully support the reasonable proposition of the Korean Party and Government for the independent and peaceful reunification of the country. Kim Young Sam group's moves to obliterate "Hanchongryon" under fire

Pyongyang, July 30 (KCNA) -- The Secretariat of the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland published information No. 743 on Tuesday denouncing the Kim Young Sam group's undisguised manoeuvres to suppress and obliterate the South Korean Federation of University Student Councils (Hanchongryon) with the approach of August 15. Some time ago, the puppet supreme public prosecutor's office announced that it would induce students to secede from "Hanchongryon" till the end of July and take a "legal action" against the students who do not withdraw from it on charges of "participating in the organisation benefiting the enemy" from August 1. This is a heinous move to make students secede from "Hanchongryon" with appeasement and at the point of the bayonet and block in advance massive events for reunification of students which are expected in south Korea with August 15 as an occasion, the information said. It continued: The Kim Young Sam group defined "Hanchongryon" as an "organisation benefiting the enemy" by invoking the "National Security Law" and threaten to accuse the students affiliated with it of "participating in the organisation benefiting the enemy." This is a deliberate provocation to incite extreme hostility among the fellow countrymen and further aggravate the inter-Korean relations. We will never remain a passive onlooker to the Kim Young Sam traitorous clique's base moves to link "Hanchongryon" with us in a far-fetched manner and raise a whirlwind of frantic suppression of it and, thereby, divert elsewhere the attention of the people and bridge over the ruling crisis.

Heinous threat against 14th WFYS

Chilgol is a time-honored place in which Kang Pan Sok, an indomitable revolutionary fighter, was born on April 21, 1892 and spent her childhood. In this place, President Kim Il Sung cultivated the great plan for national liberation in the period from spring 1923 to January 1925. Visitors went round the Revolutionary Site, looking back with deep emotion upon the brilliant revolutionary life of Kang Pan Sok. Under the guidance and help of the President, she formed the Anti-Japanese Women's Association, the First Communist Women's Political Organisation in Korea, in December 1926. The fighting aim of the association was to build socialism and communism in Korea in the future and, for the present, to defeat Japanese imperialism, liberate the country and achieve the socio-political emancipation of women. She conducted active revolutionary activities, taking it as vital to women's liberation movement to thoroughly apply the great Juche idea of the President in the women's movement as a whole. In 1928, she formed mass political organisations involving women from all walks of life. It was thanks to her energetic activities that middle-class women and women religionists as well as women of worker-peasant origin turned out in the sacred cause of liberating the country. She also carried out important tasks including the delivery of secret documents, art propaganda activities and carriage of weapons for the Saenal Juvenile Union and the Paeksan Youth Union formed by the President. When the President, together with 4-5 comrades, was closely encircled by the enemy, she carried weapons at the risk of her life. Indeed, her tireless efforts and undying exploits for the expansion and strengthening of the women's association and the revolutionary activities of the President will shine forever in the history of the country as an example of a great woman revolutionary.

Rodong Sinmun on Kim Young Sam group's moves to "reform" mass movement

Pyongyang, July 30 (KCNA) -- The Kim Young Sam group of south Korea, upset by the daring struggle of the people for independence, democracy and reunification, are resorting to vicious and insidious moves to disintegrate the mass movement from within while intensifying the fascist crackdown upon it. Commenting on this fact, a news analyst of Rodong Sinmun today says: The Kim Young Sam group are trying to paralyse the fighting spirit of south Korean students and people and "reform" the student movement and the mass movement by means of making them "nonpolitical" and bringing them under "Government control". Their clamourings that the south Korean students and people must not fight for independence, democracy and reunification cannot be construed otherwise than a vicious artifice to denature the basic character of the mass movement and cut its lifeline. Now, the colonial dominationist forces and traitorous and separatist fascist forces in south Korea intend to "reform" the movement, disintegrate the forces fighting for independence, democracy and reunification and catch fish in troubled waters. This urgently requires all these forces to sharpen their vigilance and take a concerted action. The progressive activists and movement organisations in south Korea must heighten their vigilance against the ulterior motive of the fascist clique, frustrate all subversive activities and sabotages and thus prevent their ranks from being disorganised and strengthen the mass movement politically, ideologically and organisationally. 51st anniversary of proclamation of law on sex equality marked

Pyongyang, July 30 (KCNA) -- Rodong Sinmun Today dedicates an editorial to the 51st anniversary of the proclamation of the law on sex equality by President Kim Il Sung on July 30, 1946. In the editorial titled "Women should become true revolutionaries loyal to the Party's cause", the paper says the proclamation of the law on sex equality was an epochal event of weighty significance in the Korean women's movement and the solution of women's problem. Under this law the Korean women could totally free themselves from the feudal oppression and humiliation of many years and create a new worthwhile life on an equal footing with men, it stresses. Korean national club opened in Havana

Pyongyang, July 30 (KCNA) -- The Korean national club of the 14th World Festival of Youth and Sudents was opened at the "Expo Cuba" hall in Havana on July 27. Displayed at the club were famous works of President Kim Il Sung and Secretary Kim Jong Il, books, photos and handiworks of Korea. KEDO office opens

Pyongyang, July 30 (KCNA) -- A local office of the Korean Peninsula Energy Development Organization (KEDO) was set up in Kumho area Monday for the soon-to-be-started project for light-water reactors, which are to be supplied to the DPRK by the United States under the DPRK-U.S. agreed framework. The office will take charge of all the technical and practical affairs arising in the implementation of the LWR supply agreement and protocols in direct link with the DPRK department in charge of the LWR project.

Greetings to 7th Congress of Leftist Political Parties in Latin America and Caribbean

Pyongyang, July 30 (KCNA) -- The Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea sent a message of greetings to the 7th Congress of the Leftist Political Parties in the Latin America and Caribbean region. Drought persists in Korea

Pyongyang, July 30 (KCNA) -- An unprecedented drought has continued in Korea. Over the past 50 days, there was a very little amount of rain in Pyongyang and South Phyongan Province and no rainfall in South and North Hamgyong provinces, Kangwon Province, areas south of Jongju, North Phyongan Province, and areas north of Hwangju, North Hwanghae Province. In Korea the rainy season usually begins on July 5. In the first twenty days of July, South and North Hamgyong Provinces would have 70-150 millimetres of rain and South Phyongan, North Hwanghae and Kangwon provinces 100-200 millimetres. Korea is characterized by little rain and drought in spring, a long spell of hot and humid weather and a large amount of rain and decreased sunlight in summer. The amount of rain in summer is 60-65 percent of a year's precipitation and in July and August, the rainy season, it is 50 percent of a year's rainfall. The existing drought has caused heavy damage not only in agriculture but in the nation's economy.

Unity of pro-reunification forces in s. Korea called for

Pyongyang, July 30 (KCNA) -- The spokesman for the north headquarters of the National Alliance of Youth and Students for the Country's Reunification (Pomchonghakryon) issued a statement to the press today expressing the conviction that dissident organisations in south Korea will sharpen vigilance against the alienation moves of the Kim Young Sam fascist clique and grandly hold a reunification function of August 15 this year jointly with the south headquarters of the National Alliance for the Country's Reunification (Pomminryon) and "Hanchongryon". The spokesman said: The present south Korean regime has been driven into an abyss of ruin by the strong struggle of students and people for the prompt resignation of Kim Young Sam. at this very juncture, dissident organisations excluded from the August 15 function "Hanchongryon" and the south headquarters of Pomminryon, with which it had fought shoulder to shoulder, under the pretext of the suppression by the authorities while declaring that it would hold the August 15 function as a mass rally. This means retreat of the national democratic and reunification movement in south Korea. The exclusion of patriotic organisations from the August 15 function will only foster the division of pro-reunification forces as desired by the authorities and weaken them as a whole and, furthermore, help Kim Young Sam who is breathing the lasting breath isolated by the people.

Ri Jong Ok receives credentials from Iranian Ambassador

Pyongyang, July 30 (KCNA) -- DPRK Vice-President Ri Jong Ok received credentials from Iranian Ambassador newly accredited to Korea Mohammad Ganjidoost at the Mansudae Assembly Hall today.
