Rodong Sinmun supports Hanchongryon in s. Korea

Pyongyang, September 10 (KCNA) -- Some 400 students of the Kwangju-South Jolla Provincial Federation of University Student Councils held a meeting at the open-air square of Chosun University, at which they declared they would resume the struggle of the South Korean Federation of University Student Councils (Hanchongryon) and hardened their determination to defend it resolutely. They branded as unwarrantable the threat of the south Korean regime to severely punish those students who rejoin Hanchongryon and evinced their firm determination to enlist former members of Hanchongryon who had seceded from it at an early date and thus extensively reinforce its organisation. Their determination shows that they are vanguards of the just patriotic struggle of the south Korean people, who do not yield to any bloody suppression by the Kim Young Sam group and that nothing can block their struggle to defend and strengthen their organisation, a news analyst of Rodong Sinmun today says, and continues: Their struggle is very just because it reflects the unanimous will and aspiration of the democratic forces in south Korea. The Kim Young Sam group are now suppressing and obliterating Hanchongryon, a vanguard organisation in the struggle for independence, democracy and reunification, in an attempt to find a way out of their serious crisis. Intensifying the crackdown is the last-ditch effort of those who are doomed. Justice can never be suppressed by arms. Hanchongryon and other pro-reunification democratic forces in south Korea will not lower their banner of struggle but relentlessly fight until their idea and cause are realised.

Remarks of Robert Bell

Pyongyang, September 10 (KCNA)-- Robert Bell, Senior Director for Defense Policy and Arms Control at the White House National Security Council, on September 5 said "Korea is the one place in the world where the cold war has not ended" and "There has to be in the treaty to ban anti-personnel land mines an exception for Korea". Bell reportedly reiterated the U.S. position favouring an exception for Korea in using antitank mines. He said the United States will stand firmly by its policy to seek the Korean Peninsula as a geographic exception in the ongoing talks in Oslo. Calling for removal of mines for public opinion, the United States is seeking a "geographic exception" for south Korea where a large number of mines have been planted. The U.S. imperialists are raising the rumour about "threat from north Korea" to defend their vicious intention. Bell's remarks are an undisguised challenge to the just demand of opinion, and betray the dirty intention of the U.S. imperialist warmaniacs to keep hold on south Korea as a permanent colony and military base and unleash another war of aggression in the Korean Peninsula.

A paper impudently said "The mines have been used for 50 years to protect the U.S. strategic interests and defend south Korea from invasion by north Korea." It also said that the mines are "part of defence line" for protecting the U.S. troops in south Korea and that "already-planted mines should be maintained."
