Election of Secy. Kim Jong Il as Party General Secretary, unanimous will of Koreans

Pyongyang, September 26 (KCNA) -- All the Koreans are happy that their ardent desire will soon be realised. Resolutions on recommending Secretary Kim Jong Il as the General Secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea were adopted with unanimous approval at the South Phyongan Provincial and Pyongyang municipal conferences and the conference of the Korean People's Army of the WPK. This fully demonstrated the unshakable faith and will of all the people and People's Army men and officers to have him as the supreme leader of the Party and revolution forever and accomplish the cause of Juche. Over the past 30 odd years Secretary Kim Jong Il has guided all the affairs of the Party, the state and the army and performed imperishable feats in carrying forward and accomplishing the revolutionary cause of Juche. Through his unique ideological and theoretical activities he indicated the road ahead of the popular masses' cause of independence. He has strengthened the Party, trained the revolutionary army as an invincible one, achieved the unbreakable singlehearted unity of the leader, the party and the masses, strengthened and developed the independent national economy and effected a revolutionary change in literature and the arts. All the historic changes and eye-opening events of Korea prove that he is, indeed, the most outstanding leader and the greatest statesman in the century. The election of Secretary Kim Jong Il as WPK General Secretary is the earnest desire of the Korean revolutionary martyrs who dedicated their lives to the victory of the revolutionary cause of Juche= it is an immovable will of our people and younger generation who will work for eternal prosperity of a reunified country. At the significant historic time when the desire and will of the people will soon be realised the whole country is vibrating with a new enthusiasim.

DPRK receives 80,000 tons of food from China

Pyongyang, September 26 (KCNA) -- The total quantity of 80,000 tons of food which the Chinese Party and Government had decided to give to the DPRK free of charge around July 8, the third anniversary of the death of President Kim Il Sung, arrived in Korea as of September 20. This is a clear expression of the will of the Chinese Party and Government to value and further deepen the traditional DPRK-China friendship and an encouragement to the struggle of the Korean people who are making strenuous efforts to triumphantly conclude the "Arduous March" under the wise guidance of Secretary Kim Jong Il. The Korean people sincerely wish the fraternal Chinese people greater successes in their struggle to implement the grand tasks set forth by the 15th National Congress of the Communist Party of China under the leadership of the CPC headed by respected comrade Jiang Zemin.

World Maritime Day observed

Pyongyang, September 26 (KCNA) -- Rodong Sinmun today carries a by-lined article marking the World Maritime Day. The paper notes that after its foundation the International Maritime Organization has conducted various activities to remove unfairness in worldwide sea transport and navigation, ensure technique and safety of navigation and create better marine environment. It says: The organization now directs efforts to ensuring passengers' safety while preventing marine accidents caused by different factors and maintaining safe voyage. It renewed, amended and supplemented international conventions and rules in keeping with the demand of the developing maritime field and took measures to implement them. And it is strengthening intergovernmental cooperation. In Korea based on the man-centred Juche idea, primary effort has been made to guarantee human safety in all marine activities and a good sea environment is kept thanks to the popular policies. We will continue close cooperation with the International Maritime Organization and its member nations.

Rodong Sinmun on U.S. scheme to stifle DPRK

Pyongyang, September 26 (KCNA) -- The Korean People's Army and people will never pardon anyone for making an armed provocation and playing a military gamble against the DPRK behind the scene of talks. We solemnly warn the U.S. war maniacs not to run amuck in the fever of aggression. This is stressed in a signed commentary of Rodong Sinmun today. Recalling that the United States is making military confabs against the DPRK behind the scene of talks, the news analyst of the paper says: The United States has deployed aircraft carriers and other warships around the Korean peninsula in an attempt to threaten the DPRK. The flagship of the U.S. 3rd fleet "coronado" will reportedly anchor at Jinhae of south Korea at which its commanders will hold confabs with the Japanese maritime "self-defense force" and the south Korean puppets about the preparations for the "rimpac" joint military exercises slated for next year. The U.S. Defense Secretary will fly into south Korea to have a military confab with the south Korean puppets. All these are ill-boding movements. This month alone, the U.S. war maniacs, together with the south Korean puppets, staged military games against the DPRK in the sky, on the ground and in the sea almost every day. The true color of the United States, the very one which wrecks world peace and security, is being brought into bolder relief with each passing day. The obtaining situation proves the validity of the DPRK's stand to answer dialogue with dialogue and strength with strength. Double-dealing tactics will never work on the DPRK. The U.S. war maniacs must not try to test the revolutionary spirit, iron will and military might of the Korean people and army. Our revolutionary armed forces do not make empty talk.

Provocative maritime mobile exercise

Pyongyang, September 26 (KCNA) -- The south Korean clique started a 97 all-round maritime mobile exercise, one more provocative war gamble against the northern half of Korea, in the East Sea of Korea on September 23, according to a radio report from Seoul. Involved in the military manoeuvres are vessels for support to landing and logistic transport, destroyers and other warships of the navy and flying corps of the air force and ground force. The manoeuvres began with a landing operation following naval bombardment and tactical planes' bombing on the "enemy's" coast, fully showing the war hysterics of the puppet clique. It will last a week. The frantic war exercises of the Kim Young Sam regime against the northern half of Korea go to prove that with such traitors left intact it is impossible to ease military tensions on the Korean Peninsula and to achieve the peaceful reunification.

World-wide commemoration of the Day of Sun called for

Pyongyang, September 26 (KCNA) -- The Romania-Korea Friendship Association hails and supports the resolution of the Workers' Party of Korea and the Government of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea on institution of Juche Era and the Day of Sun, which was designed to exalt forever the revolutionary life and undying feats of President Kim Il Sung, and calls upon friendship organisations in all the countries which are on good terms with the DPRK to grandly commemorate the Day of Sun in Juche 87 (1998) as an international political event. The Romania-Korea Friendship Association says this in its appeal published on September 16 in support of the resolution on institution of Juche Era and the Day of Sun. The appeal says President Kim Il Sung conducted energetic external activities and thus performed imperishable feats for friendship and cooperation among the world people and for the cause of global peace and independence. His feats will shine long with the passage of human history, adds the appeal.

Review of Rodong Sinmun

Pyongyang, September 26 (KCNA) - Rodong Sinmun today reports that Secretary Kim Jong Il, Supreme Commander of the Korean People's Army, sent thanks to officers and men of the KPA and officers' families who performed heroic feats in the reconstruction of disaster areas. Foreign mass media reported news of the South Phyongan Provincial and KPA Party conferences which adopted resolutions on recommending Secretary Kim Jong Il as General Secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea, says the paper. Under the banner title "victory and glory is in store for our Party as it is led by respected comrade Kim Jong Il" the paper rounds up words of people of all strata and edits articles on the conferences. The paper carries a political essay titled "cheers rock heaven and earth." The essay says that the people extend warm congratulations to Secretary Kim Jong Il with pure conscience and faith to follow the road of the revolutionary cause of Juche under his leadership. The paper conveys news that agricultural working people are pushing ahead with harvesting and threshing grain in the revolutionary spirit of soldiers. The paper informs the readers that the total quantity of 80,000 tons of food, which the Chinese Party and Government had decided to give to the DPRK, arrived here. The paper runs a commentary denouncing the United States moves to make military adventure against the DPRK behind talks. The paper in a commentary urges the Kim Young Sam regime to stop the suppression of the South Korean Federation of University Student Councils at once. The paper marks the world maritime day and the 35th anniversary of the Revolutionary Day of Yemen.

Frantic import of weapons

Pyongyang, September 26 (KCNA) -- The import of weapons by the south Korean t clique is the fourth largest in the world, according to a radio report from Seoul. The clique squandered 3,500 million U.S. dollars on the import of weapons in the three years from 1993 to 1995. The financial shortage in south Korea has been a source of a serious economic bankruptcy and worsening people's living. The "civilian"-veiled fascist clique, however, are hell- bent on the import of weapons with the taxes they collected from the people in a bid to round off war preparations against the northern half of Korea.

DPRK Foreign Ministry spokesman on establishment of nuclear-free zone in Central Asia

Pyongyang, September 26 (KCNA) -- The declaration on building of a nuclear-free zone in Central Asia is a positive initiative which tallies with the desire of the people in those countries to live in a nuclear-free, peaceful and stable region. The spokesman for the Foreign Ministry of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea made the remarks, answering a question put by KCNA today. He continued: "Out of the noble mission for the cause of peace the Government of our republic put forward an important proposal to turn the Korean Peninsula into a nuclear-free, peace zone long ago and has made strenuous efforts for its materialisation." "More than ten years have passed since then. But the United States, shunning our just offer, has deployed a great many nuclear weapons in south Korea and staged nuclear war exercises against our republic." "If a durable peace is to be ensured in the Korean Peninsula, the U.S. must accept our proposal concerning the nuclear-free zone and pull its troops and all nuclear weapons out of south Korea at once." "We will, in the future, too, make efforts together with the world's peaceloving people, including the central Asian people, to build a new world nuclear-free, peaceful, thriving and independent."

Secy. Kim Jong Il's work off press in Russia

Pyongyang, September 26 (KCNA) -- The Paleya Publishing House of Russia on September 18 brought out in booklet Secretary Kim Jong Il's celebrated work "On Preserving the Juche Character and National Character of the Revolution and Construction". This work published on June 19, Juche 86 (1997), serves as a guideline for the Korean people and the world's revolutionary people dynamically advancing the human cause of independence. It is because the work scientifically shows what is actual guarantee for maintaining the Juche character and national character and what are the orientation and way of carrying this principle into practice.

U.S., Japanese warhawks' frequent trip to s. Korea

Pyongyang, September 26 (KCNA) -- U.S. Secretary of Defense William Cohen will reportedly visit Seoul in mid-November to attend the south Korea-U.S. "security consultative meeting". He made a trip to Seoul last April. His trip is part of frequent criminal visits to south Korea by U.S. warhawks. Such a visit was made in March by the Assistant Secretary of Defense for East-Asian and Pacific Affairs, in April by the Chairman of the U.S. joint chiefs of staff, in July by the Former Chairman of the U.S. joint chiefs of staff, and in August by the commander of the U.S. air force in the pacific. During the visits they had military confabs with the clique. Japanese militarists, too, frequented south Korea recently. In March the Chief of staff of Japan's "ground self- defence force" and the deputy Director-General for Defence Policy of the Defence Agency and earlier this month the Chief of staff of "air self-defence force" flew to south Korea to have confabs with the puppets. The Kim Young Sam traitorous group, who have been driven to the point of ruin, forsaken by the people, are persistently inviting U.S. and Japanese war maniacs to save themselves with their help. It is illustrated by the fact that Kim Young Sam asked the U.S. Defense Secretary to maintain "firm defence commitment" in April when the latter flew to Seoul, and the army chief of staff asked for strengthened south Korea-Japan "military cooperation" in march when the chief of staff of Japan's "ground self-defence force" visited Seoul.

Yemeni revolutionary day marked

Pyongyang, September 26 (KCNA) -- Rodong Sinmun today observes the 35th anniversary of the Revolutionary Day of Yemen (September 26, 1962). The Yemeni people have achieved great success in the efforts for building a new society since the revolution, a signed article of the paper says, and goes on: They have developed a good-neighbour relationship with all friendly countries including Arab countries on the principle of non-interference. They have made efforts to realise comprehensive, fair and durable peace in the middle east region and to keep stability and security in the region. And they support the Just cause of the Palestinian people to terminate the Israeli occupation of the Arab territories. They have also achieved considerable success in developing the economy. The Korean people extend warm congratulations to the Yemeni people on the 35th anniversary of the revolutionary day and sincerely wish them greater success in their efforts to build a new society.

President Kim Il Sung's care for dental treatment of people

Pyongyang, September 26 (KCNA) -- A comprehensive dental hospital is being built on modern lines in Thongil Street of Pyongyang on the River Taedong. The hospital, which is being contructed thanks to the popular policy of the Workers' Party of Korea and the DPRK Government, will be completed before September 9, 1998, the 50th anniversary of the founding of the DPRK. It will render great services to the promotion of the health of the people. The popular policies in Korea place the interests of the people above all and subordinate everything to them. The noble popular traits of President Kim Il Sung are associated with his measures for the dental treatment of the people. On November 19 and 20, 1993, he gave teachings on the dental treatment of the people on six occasions. On the afternoon of November 19, he learned how teeth of the inhabitants of Songyo district, Pyongyang, were treated and made sure that the administration council and the Ministry of Public Health took a measure for their dental treatment. Then, he acquainted himself with the prosthesis for the people in Ryonggang county, Nampho municipality, and Mundok county, South Phyongan Province, and said that a measure to increase the level of dental prosthesis must be taken. He taught that the training of dentists and assistant dentists must be expanded and the Mt. Myohyang Medical Appliances Factory must produce more dental treatment instruments. On the morning of November 20, he learned how the dental branches of the people's hospitals in Junghwa county, Pyongyang, Ryonggang county, Nampho municipality, Mundok county, South Phyongan Province, and Hwangju county, North Hwanghae Province, rendered dental services to the people. Then, he acquainted himself with the number of the people who wanted to have false teeth put in across the country and said that the premier of the administration council himself must take charge of the supply of prosthetic material for them. Then, he grasped the number of dental hospitals in the country and their medical service. He instructed that the quality of comprehensive dental appliances and general dental appliances produced by the Mt. Myohyang Dental Appliances Factory must be enhanced and the number of prosthetists, dentists and assistant dentists must be increased. On June 25, 1994 in the last period of his life, he saw a new dental treatment appliance produced by the Mt. Pyongyang, September 26 (KCNA) -- The death of Kim Jun Bae, Former Director of the struggle department of the South Korean Federation of University Student Councils (Hanchongryon) is a deliberate murder committed by the Kim Young Sam group, says a signed commentary of Rodong Sinmun today. The news analyst of the paper says: His death is a product of the barbaric fascist suppression by the south Korean puppets against Hanchongryon and a brutal murder which can be committed only by those who do not hesitate to do any evils to prolong their dirty political days. The students affiliated with Hanchongryon are patriots who hold the destiny of the country and the nation dearer than their own comfort and pleasure and who unhesitatingly devote their youth and lives to this cause. Indiscriminate arrest, detention and murder of these students are an unheard-of crime which cannot be justified in any case and an unbearable challenge to the whole nation and the progressive people of the world who value human rights and democracy. What the south Korean puppets seek in their frantic suppression of the broad pro-reunification democratic forces including Hanchongryon is to win in the "Presidential Election" without difficulty and ensure the safety of their lives after their retirement. However, this is a gross miscalculation. They must look straight at the reality and stop the suppression of Hanchongryon at once.

Servicemen vow to defend Korean socialism with arms under leadership of Secy. Kim Jong Il

Pyongyang, September 26 (KCNA) -- Officers and men of the Korean People's Army (KPA) are overwhelmed with deep emotion and joy upon hearing the news that Secretary Kim Jong Il was recommended as General Secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea. They express their resolution to build a powerful country of Juche in Korea under the leadership of Secretary Kim Jong Il, saying to have the General at the head of the Party was what President Kim Il Sung wished and what the KPA officers and men are determined to do. An anti-Japanese revolutionary fighter, Ri Jong San, said: "KPA officers and men will remain faithful to the respected Supreme Commander with rockfirm faith and pure conscience without slightest vacillation in any adversity and defend the headquarters of the revolution headed by him with their lives in the van of the revolution." Ri Pyong Uk, Vice-Minister of the People's Armed Forces,said: "KPA officers and men express full support to the resolutions of Party conferences held in different units." "And they are filled with a firm determination to creditably discharge their mission as the army of the leader and the Party and to devotedly defend the leader, become human bombs and make suicidal attack in the course of upholding the General." A DPRK hero Kim Song Jin, who covered the enemy's gun muzzle with his chest to ensure the charge of his unit, shouting "long live General Kim Il Sung" during the Fatherland Liberation War, said: "If aggressors unleash a war, I will devotedly defend the leader, become a human bomb and make suicidal attack in fighting against the enemy, shouting 'long live General Kim Jong Il.'" A KPA General, Ji Yong Chun, said: "KPA officers and men, mindful that the army safeguards the nation's destiny and the country's prosperity, will defend socialism of Korean style with arms forever and will never allow the enemy to invade the country's sky, land and sea even 0.001 milimetre."

Imprudent behaviour of "big power"

Pyongyang, September 26 (KCNA) -- Some countries are these days exceedingly trying to poke their noses into the issue of the Korean peninsula including the "four-way talks". Typical of them is Japan. What is all the more ridiculous is that there is a "big power" that sides with Japan, playing a cheap game. These countries are not direct parties to the issue of ensuring peace on the Korean Peninsula nor are they included in the peace talks. However, they are imprudent enough to talk about "guarantee of security" on the Korean Peninsula and about "successful cooperation" for this purpose. Japan is a war criminal country which imposed immeasurable misfortunes and sufferings on the Korean people in the past and has enforced a hostile policy toward the DPRK for more than half a century, refusing to repent of them sincerely. It is still tenaciously resorting to criminal moves to encourage the division of Korea and obstruct its reunification in conspiracy with separatist forces within and outside Korea. It is well known a fact that Japan, which caused the division of the Korean Peninsula for its more than 40 years of colonial rule, is getting overheated with another campaign for reinvasion with outcries over "contingency on the Korean Peninsula". It is a mockery of history and a shame for a certain "big power" to discuss "guarantee of security" and "cooperation" with Japan, the target of worldwide criticism and derision for its disgraceful past and present and a source of war and misfortunes. If the "big power" truly wanted to keep its dignity and play an international role, it should not have behaved imprudently with Japan but minded its own business. The issue of ensuring peace on the Korean Peninsula is a matter which must be solved between the DPRK and the United States who are directly responsible for it. It is not a bargaining thing among big powers for their profits and "influence". Today's Korea is not what it was at the end of the 19th century, when it was a theatre of big powers' scramble. The Korean people will never pardon anyone for his attempts to infringe upon their national sovereignty.

Jang Chol meets Chinese publishers

Pyongyang, September 26 (KCNA) -- Vice-Premier Jang Chol met and had a friendly talk with a delegation of Chinese publishers headed by Shi Feng, Chief Secretary of the Chinese Newspaper Press, at the Mansudae Assembly Hall today. Present there were Tokko Nung in, deputy General Director of the General Publication Bureau, and Liu Yuhui, Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy in Pyongyang. The head of the delegation said that during the stay he saw Korean people making great success in socialist construction under the leadership of Secretary Kim Jong Il. He noted that the exchange in publication between China and Korea is an expression of bilateral friendship and conforms with the interests of the two countries.

Medical treatment of pows called for

Pyongyang, September 26 (KCNA) -- Ri Song Ho, Acting Chairman of the Central Committee of the DPRK Red Cross Society, sent a letter over radio today to Jong Won Sik, President of south Korea's Red Cross, at the news that Kim In So, an unconverted long-term prisoner of war detained in south Korea, is in a very critical condition and Kim Yong Thae, who is attending to him, is also on the verge of collapse. It is reported that Kim In So can never move and falls unconscious sometimes with the sequela of cerebral hemorrhage aggravating. Kim Yong Thae, who is attending to Kim In So at sick bed, is also a sick man. He is hardly eking out a living and the only eye left is losing sight. The letter recalls that the DPRK side had already proposed reasonable measures to treat the serious illness of Kim In So, but the south side unreasonably turned down the humanitarian proposals and made no reply. The letter continues: "What makes us more indignant is that your authorities subject him to harsh political persecution by extending the period of 'surveillance for public peace' and intensifying surveillance." "If your side is truly a Red Cross organisation with humanitarian mission, you must pay attention to the medical treatment of Kim In So, though belatedly, and send him, Kim Yong Thae and ham se Hwan back to the north where their families wait for them anxiously." "If their repatriation is not realised and any misfortune falls on them, your side will be wholly to blame for that."
