S. Korean defector Jong Min welcomed

Pyongyang, November 20 (KCNA) -- Pyongyang citizens met on Nov. 19 to welcome a south Korean Jong Min, who came over to the northern half of Korea. Hailing from Mokpho City, south Jolla Province, he, 46, was a director of the Ansan City Sports Society and a member of the "National Congress for New Politics", engaging himself in business in ansan, kyonggi province, before defecting. An order of the DPRK and prize were awarded and souvenirs were conveyed to him at the meeting. Sin An Bang, vice-chairman of the Pyongyang Municipal Administrative and Economic Committee, said in his welcome address that Jong Min's defection to the northern half of Korea is an expression of his longing for the Korean-style socialism centred on the popular masses. He warmly welcomed Jong Min in the name of the Pyongyang citizens. He expressed the hope that Jong Min would devote himself to the prosperity and development of the socialist homeland and the reunification of the country. Jong Min in his reply said that his defection from south Korean society was aimed at enjoying a true life in the socialist north where the independent and benevolent politics of General Kim Jong Il is being enforced. Through his experiences he could clearly know that the south is a society where money is almighty and a corrupt and ailing society where irregularities hold sway, he noted. He said: "The leader and the people are united in one mind in the relations of love and trust, respect and confidence in the socialist north that has General Kim Jong Il as the true father of the people. There is no such country in the world, I believe. "Remembering the deep favours shown by General Kim Jong Il, I will devote my efforts to the generous socialist system and the reunification of the country together with the people in the north, upholding him for all ages."

Rodong Sinmun on lessons left by intellectuals in collapse of socialism

Pyongyang, November 20 (KCNA) -- Rodong Sinmun November 19 came out with a lengthy article entitled "Lessons left by intellectuals in collapse of socialism". The authors of the article said: In the former Soviet Union, intellectuals who were ideologically degenerated before anyone else by "reforms" and "restructuring", took the lead in collapsing socialism and reviving capitalism. This teaches a serious lesson to the people. Citing specific materials to expose how intellectuals of the former Soviet Union took the van in destroying the party, the state, economy and culture, the authors of the article continued: As "reforms" were announced in the former Soviet Union, intellectuals, notably those of central organs zealously defended them and slipped into the ranks of the party after being absorbed by socialist renegades. A "reform faction" was formed within the party. Siding with this faction, intellectuals within the party shook it to its very foundation and were the first to break with it. The socialist renegades took such measures as reinstatement of reactionary elements, issuing of anti-socialist reactionary books, "openness", "pluralism" and plural election, above all, for intellectuals. Intellectuals of the former Soviet Union, who had ardently advertized the advantages of socialist economy, completely changed their position and slandered the socialist economic system. They went the length of "theorizing" the "shocking remedy" in economy, "benefits from reforms" and "happy life in capitalism", making loud advertisements about them. They also took the lead in destroying culture, while press media played a role as "standard bearers of openness". As seen above, they, failing to penetrate into the counter-revolutionary intention of the socialist renegades, sympathized with them in ideology and took the van in its implementation. By doing so, they weakened the party and state, made havoc with economy and culture and created social confusion and disorders. As a result, the former Soviet Union collapsed. Realities teach us serious lessons that if efforts are not made to revolutionize and working-classize intellectuals, they are powerless to the capitalist ideology and, finally, they fall victims to the counter-revolutionary acts. They also show that if intellectuals abandon socialism, failing to have an unshakable faith in it, they will be destined only to miserable fates. There is no boundary in science and technology. But, intellectuals should have their motherland and faith. The intellectuals of the former Soviet Union had no such faith, the article stressed.

Truth behind "Spyring case" exposed in s. Korea

Pyongyang, November 20 (KCNA) -- The south Korean paper Hangyore recently reported that legal circles and civil organisations in Pusan exposed the truth behind the "case of independent ranks of Dong-A University". According to it, the "Agency for National Security Planning" and the puppet police authorities, investigating the "case of independent ranks of Dong-A University", prosecuted those involved in it for spying. They said that the detainees made "confessions" and many evidences have been "secured". However, the defence counsel said after meeting with the detainees that they resolutely negated "confessions" advertised by the investigation authorities, there was no material evidence to prove the case and appeasement and threat were applied to investigation. It added that, as the investigation authorities could not fake up "evidences" in the investigation into a woman surnamed Pae, they banned her meeting with her family members and appeased and intimidated her and family members into making false confessions. Meanwhile, the Pusan Society for Commemorating Democratic Resistance, the Family Movement for Realising Democracy and the Democratic Alumni Association of Dong-A University recently formed a joint measure committee for probing the truth behind the spyring case of Donga-A University and started protests.

Repatriation of unconverted long-term prisoners urged

Pyongyang, November 20 (KCNA) -- The Swiss Committee for Supporting Korea's Reunification sent letters to the U.N. Secretary-General and the President of the south Korean Red Cross on November 10 demanding the repatriation of the unconverted long-term prisoners in south Korea to the northern half of Korea. The letters said: More than 40 years have passed since the Korean War ceased. However, the south Korean authorities have not yet repatriated Kim In So, Ham Se Hwan, Kim Yong Thae and other long-term prisoners for the mere reason that they refused to be converted. This is a wanton violation of the international laws including the Geneva convention. The unconverted long-term prisoners are now in critical conditions, but the south Korean authorities refuse to repatriate them and, worse still, are harshly persecuting them by invoking the "national security law". We cannot but express indignation at such inhuman acts. The letters urged the United Nations to put pressure upon the south Korean authorities to send Kim In So, Ham Se Hwan and Kim Yong Thae back to the northern half of Korea where their families are waiting for them and take all possible measures, and the south Korean authorities, too, take an immediate measure to repatriate them.
