Chongryon officials vow to greatly help build powerful nation

Pyongyang, January 4 (KCNA) -- Officials of the General Association of Korean Residents in Japan (Chongryon) staying in the socialist homeland vowed to make tangible contributions to the building of a Juche-based powerful nation under the guidance of General Secretary Kim Jong Il, in hearty response to the joint New Year editorial. Department director Song Kun Hak of the central standing committee of Chongryon said last year witnessed the full demonstration of the national power of Juche Korea through the successful launch of the first artificial satellite into orbit, adding that he keenly felt the greatness of the country. He said he would greatly help build the Juche-based powerful nation, mindful that the unfailing loyalty to the guidance of the marshal, a great man born of heaven, leads to victory and glory. Vice-chairperson Pak Yong Mi of the central standing committee of the Union of Korean Writers and Artists in Japan expressed the conviction that as long as there are the great ideas, outstanding strategy and wise guidance of the Marshal, a new era of the building of a powerful and prosperous nation will be opened in the near future. Pak vowed to make great contributions to the prosperity and development of the country, keeping pace with the people in the homeland who are making a new breakthrough in the building of a powerful nation, conduct a powerful national reunification movement with renewed confidence and courage, imbue the younger generation of compatriots with the soul of the nation and firmly unite them around the Marshal.

S. Korean chief executive's "New Year address" under fire

Pyongyang, January 4 (KCNA) -- Rodong Sinmun today comes out with a commentary criticising the South Korean chief executive for slandering North Korea in his "New Year address". From early in the year, he clamoured about somebody's "possible provocation" and cried that they would "utterly cope with" it in "cooperation" with U.S. and Japanese masters, the news analyst says, stressing his remarks mirror the criminal attempt to intensify the confrontation moves against the north. The commentary continues: If the South Korean chief executive had an iota of national conscience and reason, in the "New Year address" he should not have let loose a string of tirade about the "year of catastrophic crisis" but should have expressed his willingness to step down, bearing responsibility for having brought about such bankruptcy. And he should have expressed his intention to respond to the unanimous demand of the nation for replacing the anti-north confrontation policy by a pro-north reconciliation one. But, without a single word of it, he reeled off a string of hokum such as "growth" and the "finishing of reform" and provocative words against North Korea. This is an unpardonable mockery of the South Korean people and an undisguised challenge to the north. The Korean people are keeping tabs on the crimes committed by the rulers of the "government for the people" against the country and the nation.

Wails calling militaristic ghost

Pyongyang, January 4 (KCNA) -- Rodong Sinmun today comes out with a signed commentary on sounds of wail which rang out at a "memorial service" held at a hall near the "Yasukuni Shrine" on December 23, last year. Branding them as wails calling ghosts of Japanese militarism, the news analyst of the paper says: On December 23, 50 years ago, special-class war criminal Hideki Tojo and other militarists of Japan were put to death by hanging after having been judged by history. At the memorial service sponsored by a Japanese rightwing organisation, its chief stated, "We should not say that this war was wrong and that war was right." His utterances mean that the bloody murderous war staged by Japan in the past was not "wrong". Indeed, his rigmarole is the height of shamelessness. What cannot be overlooked is the fact that although he said such nonsensical utterances, he is not in the least denounced or punished in Japan. This reality clearly proves that how widely the militaristic spirit is now spreading in Japan. The Japanese authorities are overtly and covertly trying to instil the militaristic idea into the minds of the Japanese people. Now, sounds of wail calling the militaristic ghost are daily ringing out aloud in Japan. This represents Japan's ulterior ambition for reinvasion.

Slogan calling for building powerful nation

Pyongyang, January 4 (KCNA) -- The joint New Year editorial set forth the slogan "Let this year mark a turning-point in building a powerful nation ", which powerfully calls upon the Korean people to make a general onward march for the building of a powerful socialist nation. Reflected in this slogan is the steadfast will of the Workers' Party of Korea to build a powerful nation without fail. The slogan also carries the rockfirm will of the Korean people to bring about a great turn in following up the forced march with a cheerful advance this year and effect a new upswing in building a powerful nation by enlisting all the political, economic and military potentials. The Korean people have made an "arduous march" for several years, confronted with the imperialist allied forces. This march was not merely a defensive one but a bold offensive to win a greater victory in the revolution. In those days they successfully made a breakthrough in the forced march. It is now a decisive period like the time when the Korean People's Revolutionary Army was advancing into the homeland after successfully concluding its arduous march in the grim period of the anti-Japanese revolutionary struggle. It is the steadfast resolution and unshakable will of the WPK and the Korean people to turn today's forced march into a cheerful advance without fail. Our rockfirm determination is to build a world-level powerful nation in the near future by bringing about economic revival this year through a second grand march of Chollima in socialist construction. This year, Korea is to shore up the coal, power and metal industries and railway transport and turn out better and more goods urgently necessary for the people's living. And a great change should be made in potato farming so as to decisively solve the food problem. Mirrored in the slogan is the stamina of the invincible Korean People's Army and people to bravely fight against any formidable enemy and win a victory at any cost. The Korean people have dynamically begun the New Year's march to brilliantly adorn this year as a great turning-point in building a powerful nation.

Fascist law to stifle "Jongyojo"

Pyongyang, January 4 (KCNA) -- A plenary meeting of the Environment and Labor Committee of the National Assembly approved a "bill" on the establishment and operation of the Union of Teachers on December 29 last year, according to a radio report from Seoul. Synchronizing with this, the chief executive of South Korea said as the "bill" was deliberated on and approved by the relevant subcommittee of the "National Assembly," the "National Teachers Union" ("Jongyojo") will be legalised if the bill was deliberated on and approved by the "Legislation and Judiciary Committee of the National Assembly" and the plenary meeting of the "National Assembly." All this is a deception. The "bill" includes an article banning the right to strike, the kernel of the three rights of labor, and an article banning the establishment of grassroot bodies at schools and allowing the setting up of the central body of the "Jongyojo" alone. That trick aims to make "Jongyojo" a feeble organisation with no fighting capacity and with no ground.

Statement of spokesman for KPA general staff supported abroad

Pyongyang, January 4 (KCNA) -- Foreign political parties and organizations have released statements supporting the statement of the spokesman for the general staff of the Korean People's Army (KPA). The executive committee of the Russian Party for Peace and Unity in a statement issued on Dec. 28 last year said that the U.S. administration was responsible entirely for aggravation of the situation, considering that the U.S. threat to the DPRK is a wanton violation of international laws and one more challenge to the world community. The statement called upon all peace-loving people to pool strength and deliver decisive counterblows to aggressors who encroach upon freedom and sovereignty of the DPRK. A joint statement was issued on December 22 last year by the socialist party, the federation of trade unions, the Kissan Committee and the Organization for Afro-Asian People's Solidarity in Pakistan, the lahore branch of the Pakistan-Korea Friendship Association and the Pakistan Committee for Supporting Korea's Reunification. The statement said that the U.S. imperialists' "operation plan 5027" is a plan for a war of aggression to realize their fantastic daydream of occupying the DPRK and subordinating the Korean people and that the plan goes against the trend of times of independence for peace and progress against subordination, domination, aggression and interference. The statement demanded that the U.S. imperialists learn a due lesson from their bitter defeat in the last Korean war and stop their move to unleash another Korean war of aggression at once.

Resolution of Korean people

Pyongyang, January 4 (KCNA) -- The joint new year editorial indicates how to maintain a steady rate of production in all domains of the national economy, put the national economy as a whole on its right track and stabilize and improve the people's living this year when a new turning-point will be made in building a powerful nation. Upon receiving the joint editorial, the Korean working people are making up their mind to achieve great success in the struggle to build an economically powerful socialist country. Kim Sung Hyon, vice-Minister of Metal and Machine-Building Industries, expressed his determination to increase the production of pig iron, rolled steel, machine tools and ordered equipment and thus adorn the year of general advance with miracles and exploits and make a new breakthrough in building a powerful nation. Pang Chol Sun, manager of the Huichon General Machine Tool Plant, said that this year, too, they would make innovations in production of machine tools as during the post-war period when the great Chollima upsurge was made and actively contribute to the building of a powerful nation. Pak Hong Nam, vice-chairman of the Pyongyang City People's Committee, vowed to push forward the construction of dwelling houses of the capital and major projects and hasten the construction of the Pyongyang-Nampho Express Highway. Agricultural workers renewed their determination to make a turning-point in agricultural production vital to building a powerful nation. U Yong Sun, chairwoman of the Pongsan county, North Hwanghae Province, cooperative farm management committee, expressed her resolution to increase grain production by distributing crops on the principle of the right crop on right soil and in the proper time and widely raising double crops a year and thus contribute to building a powerful nation. Pak Kun Su, managing director of the Taehongdan County Integrated Farm of Ryanggang Province, pointed out that he would turn the farm into a famous potato producer by making a turning point in potato-farming.

Rodong Sinmun on way of country's reunification

Pyongyang, January 4 (KCNA) -- Rodong Sinmun today calls for the entire nation to give an impetus to this year's grand march for reunification with new confidence and courage and make a turning-point in the country's reunification. The author of an article of the paper says: It is a vital requirement of the nation to end the political and military confrontation between the north and south which has existed for more than half a century and to achieve national reconciliation and unity. The country is now placed under a touch-and-go situation owing to the anti-DPRK confrontation and war moves of the U.S. imperialists and the South Korean ruling quarters. The outside forces who do not want Korea to be reunified, are trying to fish in troubled waters, inciting the confrontation between the north and south. If the inter-Korean political and military confrontation continues under this situation, domination and interference by outside forces can not be ended nor can peace be ensured but the nation will go to ruin. South Korea should not depend on the outside forces but take the way for reunification through alliance with communism and the north, joining hands with the fellow countrymen in the north. The five-point policy of the great unity of the nation put forth by General Secretary Kim Jong Il is a great banner and charter of the country's reunification. Since he leads the grand march of the nation toward reunification, the prospect of the country's reunification is bright.

Pyongyangites vow to let this year mark turning- point

Pyongyang, January 4 (KCNA) -- More than 100,000 people in the capital city of Pyongyang held a rally at Kim Il Sung Square this afternoon and resolved to thoroughly carry out the tasks set out in the joint new year editorial. The joint editorial which was published by Rodong Sinmun, Joson Inmingun and Chongnyon Jonwi on the new year, Juche 88 (1999) called upon the entire party, army and people to let this year mark a turning-point in building a powerful nation. Hong Song Nam, Han Song Ryong, Kim Jung Rin and other senior party and state officials, working people, youth and students in the city were present at the rally. A report was made by Ryang Man Gil, chairman of the Pyongyang City People's Committee. Then followed speeches. The reporter and speakers said that last year the Korean people celebrated the 50th anniversary of the DPRK foundation as a grand festival of socialist victors and laid firm foundations for the building of a powerful nation, pulling through manifold difficulties with death-defying readiness and unremitting fighting spirit. All the proud victories won in the forced march of socialism last year are the result of ideology, strategy, grit and will of General Secretary Kim Jong Il who is firmly building up the revolutionary ranks with the People's Army as the hard core and pushing ahead with socialist construction in the revolutionary spirit of soldiers, they said, noting: This year will be a new turning-point and a year of general advance when the grand blueprint for building a powerful nation that Marshal Kim Jong Il has long worked out should be carried out in a comprehensive way. Turning to the tasks for building a powerful nation, they vowed to push ahead with the second grand march of Chollima as they built the socialist country, independent in politics, self-supporting in the economy and self-reliant in national defence, on the debris through the Chollima march In the 1950s and thus build up Korea into a socialist country strong in ideology, military affairs and economy. This year's struggle is still arduous, but the final victory is in sight, they said. When the entire party, the whole army and all the people turn out in the general onward march, our march will certainly lead to a cheerful advance and 1999 will be recorded in history as the most brilliant year of the 20th century. They called upon the whole nation in the north, south and abroad to give an impetus to the movement for national reunification with new confidence and courage and thus build a powerful nation, reunified and prospering, on this land in the near future. A resolution was adopted at the rally.
