Japan should not act rashly

Pyongyang, January 5 (KCNA) -- Japanese Prime Minister Obuchi held a New Year press conference on January 1 and slandered the DPRK again, branding the DPRK's launch of an artificial satellite as "launch of a ballistic missile". He alleged it must be confirmed that there are no underground nuclear facilities in the DPRK. Moreover, he impertinently cried that Japan "will decisively cope with the DPRK's possible launch of another ballistic missile" in close "cooperation" with the United States and South Korea. Even today when the world public recognizes that the DPRK launched an artificial satellite, Japan is insisting that it was a "ballistic missile launch" and, worse still, the Japanese Prime Minister is inspiring the psychology of anti-DPRK confrontation, crying for "decisive measure" against somebody. In a word, at the press conference, Obuchi announced Japan will be engaged in the frantic anti-DPRK campaign this year, too, as last year. By vociferating about "missile launch" and "suspected underground nuclear facilities," he revealed Japan's ulterior intention to find pretexts to step up arms buildup and modernization of armed forces for the purpose of staging a comeback to the Korean peninsula this year. Under the pretext of coping with "missile threat" by the DPRK, Japan is not only squandering a large amount of money on development of military reconnaissance satellites but also actively trying to introduce the "theatre missile defence system" with the united states. Besides, it is putting spurs to modernizing the "self-defence forces". The Japanese authorities should know that they are playing at wrong cards from the beginning of the year. They had better ponder over consequences to be entailed by "decisive counteraction" against the DPRK. If Japan finally takes the road to anti-DPRK confrontation in league with the united states, she will only go to ruin.

Papers call for pushing ahead with general onward march for building powerful nation

Pyongyang, January 5 (KCNA) -- Pyongyang-based papers today editorially call for remaining loyal to the ideas and leadership of Marshal Kim Jong Il and pushing ahead with the general onward march with firm confidence and redoubled courage to open a turning phase in building a powerful nation without fail this year. An editorial of Rodong Sinmun says: "Let this year mark a turning-point in building a powerful nation " this is a revolutionary slogan which reflects the far-reaching plan and indomitable will of Marshal Kim Jong Il to bring a new, powerful and prosperous era to this land come what may. Steadfast is his determination to build Korea into a powerful socialist nation with the highest might in the ideological, political, military, economic and all other sectors in the near future. The slogan is one of faith overflowing with patriotism and loyalty of the Korean people to exalt Kim Il Sung's Korea for all ages. Our socialist cause is ushering in a great turning-point. We have laid solid foundations which give a sure guarantee for the final victory in the forced march. To make a general onward march for letting this year mark a turning-point in building a powerful nation is an essential demand for valiantly shattering the imperialists' isolation and suffocation moves and firmly defending Korean socialism. When the Korean people wage a powerful struggle with the political and ideological, military and economic strength consolidated in the forced march for socialism, the might of Juche Korea, on which even the only superpower of the world dare not pounce, will be further demonstrated. All the party members and other people should struggle with death-defying readiness to remain loyal to the ideas and leadership of Marshal Kim Jong Il at the cost of their lives. A boundlessly bright prospect is open before us who are making all efforts to build a powerful nation under the guidance of the marshal. Minju Joson calls for making a dynamical advance with confidence in victory and optimism under the sacred banner of building a powerful nation and thus adorn Juche 88 (1999) as the most brilliant year in the 20th century and powerfully demonstrate to the whole world again the spirit of glorious Kim Il Sung's Korea.

U.S. anti-DPRK hostile moves

Pyongyang, January 5 (KCNA) -- Rodong Sinmun today comes out with a signed commentary headlined "we, too, will do what we should do" regarding the U.S. anti-DPRK hostile moves with the approach of the DPRK-U.S. negotiations. The news analyst says: At a meeting of the executive council of the Korean Peninsula Energy Development Organization (KEDO) held in New York at the end of last year with the Japanese and South Korean authorities in attendance, the United States has again postponed the full-dress start of the Light-Water-Reactor (LWR) project which was due in mid-January, till the middle of this year. In another development, at a high-level "meeting for consulting policy towards the north," the United States agreed on "joint countermeasure" with Japan and South Korea and decided to put "pressure" on the DPRK regarding the DPRK's "suspected underground nuclear facility." This is an insult to a dialogue partner, as it mirrors the unchanged attempt to stifle the DPRK. While talking about "dialogue", the United States does not respect the DPRK, a dialogue partner, and is undesirably playing with the faked-up "suspicion" issue. Worse still, the United States is using South Korea and Japan as a trumpeter and servant in kicking up a row for pressure on the DPRK in a bid to ignite the second war of aggression on Korea. The United States must know that if it fails to do what it should do, while continuing to insult the dialogue partner and resort to pressure on the DPRK, the DPRK, too, will do what it should do.

S. Korean chief executive urged to honor his commitment to "constitutional revision"

Pyongyang, January 5 (KCNA) -- Prime Minister Kim Jong Pil of South Korea in a press interview on December 29 last year said he need not meet and have talks with the present chief executive as to the time of constitutional revision for a "parliamentary cabinet system," according to a radio report from Seoul. He who is also the boss of the "United Liberal Democrats" went on to say that as there is an agreement in written form as regards the "parliamentary cabinet system," there can not be talks in this regard. His remarks revealed once again that a scramble of the two "allies" for power will come in real earnest.

Independence in S. Korea is urgent requirement

Pyongyang, January 5 (KCNA) -- The joint editorial published by the papers of the party, army and youth league on the New Year stressed that if the cherished desire of the Korean people for national reunification is to be realized, above all, South Korea should be made independent. Rodong Sinmun today points out that independence in South Korea is an urgent and essential requirement for putting an end to outside forces' domination and interference, establishing national sovereignty on a nation-wide scale and achieveing national reunification. The author of the article goes on: When South Korea is made independent free from outsiders' domination and subjugation, national sovereignty can be established on a nation-wide scale and national unity and reunification be realized. The U.S. domination and subjugation over South Korea is the main obstruction that blocks national reunification and the road of independently carving out the destiny of the nation and wrecks peace. Without putting an end to the U.S. domination and subjugation, the South Korean people's independent life and wishes, national reconciliation, unity and reunification cannot be realised. The South Korean people should not lay down the banner of the struggle of anti-U.S. independence, anti-puppet democracy and for national reunification, before they win the final victory.

Common desire of humankind

Pyongyang, January 5 (KCNA) -- Rodong Sinmun in a signed article today points out that it is a common desire and aspiration of humankind to build an independent, new world. It says: The building of an independent new world is inseparable from an anti-imperialist struggle. Last year's lesson teaches the progressive humankind that if arrogant strong-arm acts of the U.S.-led imperialists are not blocked, neither national sovereignty nor world peace can be defended nor can an independent new world be built. If one has any illusion about the imperialists and yields to or retreats even a step before their dominationist moves, it will bring irretrievable consequences. The progressive people of the world should strengthen unity and solidarity under the banner of independence against imperialism and actively struggle to establish a new order in the international arena. They should also struggle hard to rebuild, expand and strengthen socialism and to develop cooperation and exchange among developing countries. The Korean people will in the future, too, strengthen unity and solidarity with the progressive people, anti-imperialist independent forces aspiring after socialism in the idea of independence, peace and friendship. They will also struggle hard to crush the aggression and war moves of the imperialists and to build a peaceful and independent new world.
