No way out for those dependent on outsiders
Pyongyang, March 3 (KCNA) -- Vice-chairman O Ik Je (a South Korean defector) of the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland in an interview with KCNA on March 1 denounced the present South Korean chief executive's "dialogue with the people" held on the first anniversary of his assumption of office as anti-reunification forum of those who are dependent on outsiders.
The statement of the present South Korean chief executive that he will pursue "reconciliation" and "cooperation" between the north and south of Korea in "close cooperation" with "friendly countries" is meant to work towards permanent division of the nation with the backing and strength of foreign forces, he said. He blamed the present chief executive for peddling again the "sunshine policy." He went on to say: The "policy" is a "defeat communism policy" pursued with the consent of the U.S., part of confrontation with the north and a campaign against the nation and reunification. The "globalization" of the economy on the lips of the present South Korean chief executive imbued with national nihilism to the marrow is aimed at using the South Korean economy for the purposes of his lifelong stay in power and of anti-reunification.
There is no way out for those who leave everything to the tender mercy of outsiders. The South Korean authorities should no longer go against the desire of the nation for reunification, but make a bold decision to find a way out in unconditionally accepting the proposal of the joint meeting of the government, political parties and organisations of the DPRK.
Joint statement of WPK and Peruvian front
Pyongyang, March 3 (KCNA) -- The Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) and the People's Front of Workers, Peasants and Students of Peru published a joint statement in Pyongyang on March 2. Chairman of the People's Front of Workers, Peasants and Students of Peru Genaro Ledesma Izquieta visited the DPRK from February 16 to March 2 at the invitation of the Central Committee of the WPK.
During his stay in Korea, both sides informed each other of their activities at talks and exchanged opinions on matters of common concern including issues of developing relations between the two parties and advancing the cause of anti-imperialist independence and socialism, and reached a full consensus of views on matters discussed, the statement said. It further said: The WPK expressed support and solidarity for the activities of the Peruvian front to build socialism of Peruvian style, upholding the slogan "for socialism for the people together with them."
The front in a statement expressed the firm conviction that a powerful socialist nation with the greatest potential in ideology, politics, military affairs, economy and other domains will be built in Korea under the wise guidance of the respected General Secretary Kim Jong Il in the near future. Both sides expressed their steadfast will to positively contribute to strengthening and developing the world socialist movement by strengthening international unity and solidarity with the progressive political parties in the idea of independence and socialism.
Film show on national holiday of Bulgaria
Pyongyang, March 3 (KCNA) -- The DPRK-Bulgaria Friendship Association organized a film show here on Tuesday to mark the national holiday of Bulgaria. Invited there was Georgi Yanchev, charge d'affaires ad interim of the Republic of Bulgaria. Present there were vice-chairman of the DPRK-Bulgaria Friendship Association Kim Myong Chol, vice-chairman of the central committee of the Union of Agricultural Workers of Korea, officials concerned and working people in Pyongyang.
Attempt to put brake on Mt. Kumgang tourism
Pyongyang, March 3 (KCNA) -- The South Korean "Minister of National Defence", Chon Yong Thaek, in a "report on defence to the national assembly" a few days ago, let loose nonsense that "one can not rule out possibility of the north diverting the payment to it for Mt. Kumgang tourism to a military purpose," according to a news report. Meanwhile, the "Unification Minister", Kang In Dok, addressing a recent "meeting of the National Assembly committee on unification, diplomatic and trade affairs", said they are "taking a cautious approach toward the possible use of the funds paid by Hyun Dai to the north for the development of Mt. Kumgang tourism as military spending."
As it is by no means accidental that high-ranking South Korean military and government officials chimed in with each other in clamoring about the "use of funds as military spending," the north can not but consider it a serious matter. Their blasts represent the ill-intentioned political attempt to stop halfway the Mt. Kumgang tourism now under way thanks to the compatriotic measure taken by the Korean Asia and Pacific Peace Committee in response to the initiative of Jong Ju Yong, Honorary Chairman of the South Korean Hyun Dai Business Group.
Now the north can not but have a strong doubt about whether the tourism arranged with so much efforts can go on or not. In actuality, the north's measure to go ahead with Mt. Kumgang tourism was not motivated by any commercial purpose to earn money. It is based on the principle of great national unity for national reunification whereby the north and the south can trust, unite and cooperate with each other through Mt. Kumgang tourism. Nevertheless, the South Korean ruling quarters describe the north's compatriotic measure as a "money-driven one" and went the length of even spreading such a sheer rumor as "use of funds as military spending." It is intolerable.
The "separation of politics and economy", "exchanges" and "cooperation" mouthed by the South Korean rulers whenever an opportunity presents itself are all sheer lies and it is no more than a smokescreen to conceal their anti-national confrontation policy. The South Korean authorities should stop the ill-intentioned obstructive moves at once, clearly mindful they will be held wholly responsible for all the consequences to be entailed by the suspension of Mt. Kumgang tourism.
Nullification of "fisheries accord" called for
Pyongyang, March 3 (KCNA) -- Upwards of 1,500 representatives of fishermen across South Korea held a meeting in Pusan on Monday calling for nullifying the treacherous "fisheries accord," according to a radio report from Seoul.
The representatives bitterly accused the present "government" of excluding fishing waters for a fleet of more than 250 fishing boats from the discussion at fisheries negotiations with Japan and asserted that it is little different from giving up fisheries. They strongly urged the "government" to nullify the treacherous and submissive "fisheries accord" that threatens the livelihood of the South Korean fishermen. They took to the streets, distributing copies of literature titled "letter to the people" carrying their demands.
Tree planting called for
Pyongyang, March 3 (KCNA) -- Papers here today in editorials issued on the newly set the spring tree planting day call upon working people to turn out in spring tree planting and effect signal innovations in tree planting in the year that marks a turning point in building a powerful nation. On Moran Hill on March 2, Juche 35 (1946), the President Kim Il Sung gave instructions to turn the hill into a recreation place for the people. Korea set the day that marked a historic occasion in kindling the first torch of tree planting.
Rodong Sinmun in an editorial stresses the tree planting is of weighty importance in Korea, greater part of it being mountainous. It goes on: General Secretary Kim Jong Il saw to it that the tree planting day was newly set and trees are planted through all-people movement in the right time. All the people should turn out in the tree planting in hearty response to his lofty intention. It is his far-reaching plan and firm will to build our country liberated by the President into the most beautiful and affluent country in the world and a people's paradise.
Sophism of present South Korean chief executive
Pyongyang, March 3 (KCNA) -- The present South Korean chief executive on February 25 gave a "dinner party" at "Chongwadae" where he said that the workers should "understand" the "reality" and "cooperate in restructuring," asserting that it is a must for saving the economy and if it is done, people would unavoidably lose their jobs, a Seoul-based radio said. In actuality, he has turned the economy into a colonial appendage of outside forces. His outcries for the recovery of the economy through the "restructuring" are a self-contradictory rigmarole.
DPRK Foreign Ministry spokesman on Kosovo issue
Pyongyang, March 3 (KCNA) -- "We consider that any attempt of the United States to militarily occupy Kosovo should never be allowed." A spokesman for the Foreign Ministry of the DPRK clarified this position in an interview with KCNA today over the Kosovo issue.
At the Rambouillet Peace Talks the Sides of Yugoslavia and Kosovo Albanians basically agreed to a political document on a tentative peace deal proposed by the 6-nation contact group. As a result, Kosovo crisis could get out of one more critical situation, the spokesman noted, and said: However, the Kosovo issue is still at conflict owing to the U.S. persistent attempt to station NATO troops in Kosovo and the party concerned Yugoslavia's strong opposition to it.
In fact, it has become more complicated and acute by intervention and military pressure of the United States and other western countries who are seeking to seize the initiative in Balkan region and further enhance NATO's position and role. The Kosovo issue is an internal affair of Yugoslavia and it should be solved fairly and peacefully on the basis of respecting sovereignty and territorial integrity of the federal republic of Yugoslavia.
Kim Jong Il's work proves validity
Pyongyang, March 3 (KCNA) -- Rodong Sinmun today dedicates an article to the 6th anniversary of the publication of General Secretary Kim Jong Il's work "Abuses of Socialism Are Intolerable" on March 1, Juche 82 (1993). It is a monumental work which holds a distinguished place in the history of the immortal leadership of Kim Jong Il, who has firmly defended the socialist cause from the abuses of all enemies.
The work smashed to pieces the sophistry of the renegades of socialism calling socialism "totalitarian", "barracks-like" and "administrative and commanding", and fully proved the unquestioned superiority of socialism. Kim Jong Il is the great defender of justice who has firmly defended the socialist cause with the most transparent faith in socialism, a signed article of the paper says, and goes on: It is Kim Jong Il's faith that socialism is an absolute truth and is sure to win because it is the people's demand and aspiration.
It is with this transparent faith that he could see through the absurd sophistry abusing socialism and deal a hard blow to the imperialists and renegades with his well-grounded logic. The Korean people did not waver when socialism collapsed in some countries, and demonstrated their dignity as a people with strong faith steadily advancing along the road of socialism in defiance of the anti-socialist campaign of the imperialists. The credit for all this goes to him the supreme incarnation of revolutionary faith.
The article refers to the immortal exploits of Kim Jong Il in leading the socialist cause to victory with his distinguished wisdom. Noting the DPRK, which is crystal of his idea and leadership, is an invulnerable fortress of socialism and a beacon of hope for progressive humankind, the article says that whatever sophism of the enemies abusing socialism is smashed by the DPRK.
Three commander's exploits glorified
Pyongyang, March 3 (KCNA) -- The construction of monuments to revolutionary exploits of the 3 commanders is making brisk headway in Korea. The Korean people are highly praising the President Kim Il Sung and General Secretary Kim Jong Il and the revolutionary fighter Kim Jong Suk as 3 commanders of Mt. Paektu. Monuments have been erected in the places associated with their revolutionary exploits.
Recently, a monument to the revolutionary activities of the 3 commanders "Love for people will be conveyed forever" was built at the Red Cross General Hospital of Korea, a monument to on-the-spot guidance of President Kim Il Sung "immortal exploits performed for Kim Chaek University of technology will be glorified" at the university and a monument to on-the-spot guidance of General Secretary Kim Jong Il "immortal exploits for Unchon county will shine forever" in Unchon county, South Hwanghae Province.
The exquisitely carved large granite monuments have letters and poems praising their on-site guidance and immortal leadership exploits. Such monuments are being built not only in specific organs and places but also in many other units and places across the country ranging from ministries, national institutions to organs of the people's armed forces and the public security, factories, enterprises, co-op farms and educational institutions.
This work for exalting the exploits of the 3 commanders has made sustained progress in spite of imperialist's isolation and suffocation moves and natural disasters for several consecutive years. This represents the conviction and will of the Korean people that only when the 3 commanders are held in higher esteem and socialism is built as intended by them can they build a powerful country without fail. The last 5 years have witnessed the building of many monuments at more than a hundred units of different domains.
Press reform urged
Pyongyang, March 3 (KCNA) -- "National Federation of Pressmen's Unions" and the citizens solidarity council for press reform demanded the reform of newspapers at a press conference on February 26, according to a radio report from Seoul.
They said that "newspapers exist to meet the interests of the readers and the nation" but "owners of the press are operating newspapers under a family management system to lord it over them, monopolizing ownership, management and rights of edition and personnel affairs." On the same day, "National Federation of Broadcasting Workers' Unions" in a statement urged the "Broadcasting Reform Committee" to withdraw its "draft reform plan" and to "ensure the autonomy of broadcasting institutions."
"Korea-Japan annexation treaty" dismissed
Pyongyang, March 3 (KCNA) -- The South Korean newspaper Korea Daily March 1 ran an article captioned "'Korea-Japan annexation treaty' null and void in view of Japanese law" stating the "Korea-Japan annexation treaty" was fabricated by Japan by force of arms in 1910. Curator Ri Jong Hak of the Tok Islet Museum discovered the "notes of a meeting of the privy council" which dealt with the "treaty" as an agenda item, in the Tokyo state archives, the "imperial" library of Japan, and made it public, said the paper.
The notes say that the "privy council" examined a draft "treaty" for 1 hour and 5 minutes on August 22, 1910, and got the approval of the signing of the "treaty" from the Japanese "Emperor." According to data, including a "report of the governor-general of Korea on the annexation of Korea," which was discovered by the curator, resident-general Terauchi and Ri Wan Yong signed the "treaty" on the above-mentioned day, the paper said, and continued: It was only after the signing of the "treaty" that the "privy council" informed the resident-general of the "approval" of the "Emperor" by telegram.
In the final analysis, the resident-general unilaterally signed the "treaty" without the final approval of the "Emperor," evidence of apparent disregard of the Japanese law, as well as of a clear violation of international law.
Grave threat to global peace
Pyongyang, March 3 (KCNA) -- Chairman of the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee Gilman, at a hearing some time ago, made a statement calling for the establishment of "Northeast Asian Defence Organization" involving the United States, Japan and South Korea to confront missiles of the DPRK, Mainichi Shimbun reported. Misinterpreting the launch of the DPRK's first artificial satellite last August as "missile launch," he argued the U.S. mainland, too, has been exposed to missile threat from the DPRK. Then he stressed the need to set up a joint organization intended for research, development and deployment of ballistic missiles.
It is needless to say his argument came from bellicosity based on fabricated "North Korean threat." But what cannot be overlooked is that this argument reflected the conservative hard-liner's dominative design to give concrete shape to the U.S. Asia strategy which is to establish an Asian version of "NATO" and that it was officially expressed as intention of the congress. The U.S. administration is these days revitalizing its policy of arms buildup, which was temporarily suspended after the Cold War, and undisguisedly seeking to dodge its obligations under "ABM" and other treaties that have been put in force or signed for strategic arms limitations.
That being the reality, Gilman's statement cannot but arouse deep apprehension as it is a grave threat and challenge to peace in Asia and the rest of the world. When the 21st century humankind wishes to make a peaceful one is near at hand, the U.S. hard-liners are insisting on war policy fraught with great danger. The prevailing situation urgently calls upon the peaceloving people in Asia and the rest of the world to heighten their vigilance against the U.S. scheme for the establishment of the Asian version of "NATO," and reject and check the war policy of the U.S. bellicose elements.

The February holiday was celebrated on a worldwide scale amidst the concern and expectation of the relevant governments and political parties. Scheme to destroy Hanchongryon
Pyongyang, March 3 (KCNA) -- A commentary of Minju Joson today denounces the South Korean "Minister of Education" and other ruling quarters' mailing to universities as a despicable act to destroy the South Korean Federation of University Student Councils (Hanchongryon) and a grave violation of human rights that tramples down campus freedom and democracy. It says: Letters giving a distorted picture of the "reality of the student movement" were sent to new students allegedly to "prevent their radicalization."
The South Korean authorities are trying to isolate Hanchongryon and stamp out the patriotic tradition of its struggle by blocking the awakening of students with slovenly action unprecedented in the history of suppression of the student movement. These fascist ruling quarters are a group of traitors to the nation. They are not only cracking down on Hanchongryon but also sending letters to new students in a bid to prevent them from participating in a just struggle. The mailing is as foolish as trying to cover sunshine with the palm of a hand, the paper says, stressing that the South Korean authorities should stop it at once.
Senior party and state officials plant trees
Pyongyang, March 3 (KCNA) -- Kim Yong Nam, Pak Song Chol, Ri Jong Ok, Hong Song Nam and other senior party and state officials planted trees with working people, youth and students on March 2 newly instituted as the tree planting day.
Meetings of working people, youth and students to vow to push ahead with tree planting were held with the attendance of senior party and state officials at the Kumsusan Memorial Palace, Mt. Yangji in Phyongsong, South Phyongan Province, Chongsan-ri and Thaesong-ri, Kangso district, Nampho and Mt. Jongbang in Sariwon, North Hwanghae Province.
Recalling that on March 2 Juche 35 (1946) the President Kim Il Sung climbed up Moran Hill in Pyongyang and gave instructions to turn the hill devastated by the Japanese into a picturesque pleasure ground for people, kindling the first torch of afforestation across the country, the meetings noted that this day was instituted as the tree planting day. The meetings called upon people to turn out in spring tree planting to cover the country with forests and to turn the streets and villages into parks.
Koryo Sindoksan mineral water
Pyongyang, March 3 (KCNA) -- In Ryonggang county, Nampho, there is the Koryo Sindoksan mineral water with a history of untold years. People show special interest in the water because there are many macrobians among the population in Mt. Sindok area. The word "Sindok" is originated from a legend that the water works wonders. Now that the average life expectancy in the DPRK has reached 74.5, there are many people who are over 90 years old in this area. According to the results of investigation conducted recently, it is effective against various kinds of diseases including heart disease and cancer, promotes metabolism and digestion and makes skin soft and elastic.
The water source is in the granite-gneiss zone which was formed in the Cenozoic era geologically. For the extraordinary geographical and sanitary conditions, the volume and quality of the water are free from the seasonal influence. It is registered as natural monument of the DPRK No. 404 as it is of great significance in view of academic and utility value.
A modernly-equipped water-processing factory is operating near the water source. The processing facilities with an annual production capacity of 150,000 tons are able to produce various standards, ranging from 0.35 litre to 18.9 litres. As the factory is staffed with able technicians and experts, the manufacture of products bears quality marks.
The products are exported to Japan, Singapore, China and other countries. The export and sales are handled by the Koryo Sindoksan Joint Venture Company.

Some 160 espionage flights
Pyongyang, March 3 (KCNA) -- The U.S. hawks let strategic and tactical spy planes of various types fly for some 160 espionage flights against the North Korea in February, military sources said. High-altitude strategic reconnaissance planes and patrol planes made about 40 espionage flights. U-2 high-altitude strategic reconnaissance planes, RC-135 strategic reconnaissance planes and P-3 patrol planes flew over areas along the military demarcation line for photographing and electronic reconnaissance on the northern half of Korea as a whole.
RC-12, RF-4c and RC-7 tactical spy planes committed espionage on frontline and coastline areas of the North Korea. Involved in espionage were a lot of military planes from Japan and other overseas bases. All this is a vicious challenge to the unanimous desire of the Korean people and the peaceloving people of the world for detente on the Korean peninsula and its peaceful reunification.
Greetings to Moroccan King
Pyongyang, March 3 (KCNA) -- Kim Yong Nam, President of the presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly of the DPRK, today sent a message of greetings to King Hassan the Second of Morocco on the occasion of the 38th anniversary of its National Day. He wished good health and happiness to the King as well as bigger success in the work of the king and the people for progress and prosperity of the country.
