S. Korean workers' struggle gains momentum

Pyongyang, April 30 (KCNA ) -- The South Korean workers' struggle against anti-social " restructuring" and for vital rights is mounting on the eve of May Day. The (South) Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) had a press conference on April 18 at which it clarified its will to keep holding rallies in different parts of South Korea simultaneously by May Day with a general strike of the Seoul subway trade union as a prelude to them. The union entered into a general strike on the morning of April 19. At least 34,000 workers under the KCTU had been in strike as of April 22. With a view to intensifying the struggle, the KCTU held a mammoth rally on April 24 and decided to call a general strike of second phase. At the end of the rally 10,000 workers and students marched as far as to the Myongdong Cathedral, demonstrating their strong solidarity, before staging a bigger rally there. The Federation of South Korean Trade Unions formally decided to secede from the labor-management-government committee on April 9. They expressed their stand to launch an anti-" government" struggle on April 17 demanding the suspension of unilateral " restructuring." Their rallies and demonstrations are still going on.

U.S. Defense Secretary's remarks refuted

Pyongyang, April 30 (KCNA) -- U.S. Secretary of Defense William Cohen said that the United States closely watches the situation on the Korean peninsula while air raids on Yugoslavia continue and that necessary measures have already been taken for an unexpected event. It keeps close scrutiny over movement of North Korea in relation to the Balkan war, he remarked. Commenting on his remarks, Rodong Sinmun today says: These remarks reveal the U.S. invariable intention to provoke a second Korean war. Under its strategy, which is to conduct two wars at the same time in major areas, the U.S. seeks to ignite another war of aggression in the Korean peninsula, the main gate to Asia, while the war is going on in the Balkans. Unusual movements of the U.S. troops in and around South Korea indicate that another Korean war is on the point of outbreak. The relations between the DPRK and the United States, which are technically at war, are getting from bad to worse owing to the latter's adventurous maneuvers against the former. Under this situation, the U.S. provocative military actions may cause an armed conflict and a total war between the two states. The DPRK is in full readiness to strongly counter any aggression on its initiative. We warn that war on the Korean peninsula, which may be provoked by the U.S., will be quite different from the past Iraqi crisis and the present conflict in Yugoslavia. The United States should think twice before recklessly throwing down the glove to fight the DPRK.

Strategic reconnaissance planes, AWACS and patrol planes made 30 espionage flights in April. Those espionage flights are a vicious challenge to the unanimous desire of the Korean people and other peaceloving people of the world who hope for detente on the Korean peninsula and its peaceful reunification.

Pyongyang, April 30 (KCNA ) -- The military attaches corps here on April 28 visited coop farms in Kangwon Province whose appearance changed beyond recognition in the wake of land rezoning. Members of the corps looked round repartitioned standardized fields of the Ranjong Coop Farm in Kosan county and the Phunghwa Coop Farm in Anbyon county, being briefed on the land rezoning that was finished within a few months through the implementation of the far-reaching plan of grand nature-remaking of the respected Supreme Commander Kim Jong Il under his wise guidance, the land rezoning that people could not think of for centuries. KCNA on aggressive legislation on " Guidelines for Japan-U.S. Defense Cooperation"

Pyongyang, April 30 (KCNA) -- The Japanese reactionaries reportedly railroaded legislation on the " Guidelines for Japan-U.S. Defense Cooperation" through the House of Representatives on April 27 in defiance of strong protest and condemnation from the people at home and abroad. The criminal act is part of very dangerous developments as good as the official approval and proclamation of legal and institutional mechanism to tighten military ties with the United States and legalise Japan's overseas expansion in the Asia-Pacific region. It deserves caution and deep apprehensions from the people in this region. The recently-approved legislation included a " bill on security in emergency in surrounding areas." The bill legally guarantees the Japanese reactionaries " support to the U.S." in " emergency in surrounding areas," not in " emergency in Japan." The Japanese reactionaries opened up a broad road to reinvasion for obtaining hegemony and lording it over in Asia with the backing of the U.S. Their criminal intention can clearly be seen in a just-okayed " draft amendment to the law on the Self-Defense Forces." They describe the " draft amendment" as the one for rescuing the Japanese overseas by warships of the "SDF." As a matter of fact, this means that they are to push ahead with the dispatch of the "SDF" for overseas aggression in full swing. From this the legislation is the aggressive war one to realise the old dream of the " Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere" and a criminal mechanism which may wreck peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region and inflict all sorts of misfortunes and pains upon the people in this region. The point at issue is that the legislation was approved by the diet. The approval eloquently proves that the diet is reduced to be a virtual waiting maid of the reactionary Japanese government and it is a group of militarist reactionaries going against public opinion and the trend of the times. It goes without saying that the legislation aims at the DPRK. The primary target of the "bill on security in emergency in surrounding areas" is " emergency on the Korean peninsula" and the primary target of the overseas dispatch of the "SDF" is the DPRK. All this clearly shows that the Japanese reactionaries' moves for reinvasion against the DPRK have reached a dangerous stage of practice. As a consequence, the military situation on the peninsula is so tense that a war may break out any moment. If the Japanese reactionaries dare stage a comeback, ignoring our warnings, they are bound to meet a thousandfold retaliatory strike.

Central botanical garden, treasure of nation

Pyongyang, April 30 (KCNA) -- Four decades have passed since the Central Botanical Garden was founded on April 30, 1959. It is located in the northwestern suburbs of Pyongyang . Over the past 40 years the garden has been built into a better base of scientific research and dissemination of scientific knowledge for the eternal prosperity of the nation as well as a place for mass education and cultural recreation of working masses. It is an all-embracing botanical complex -- 14 plant sections extending 250 hectares, the International Friendship Plant Hall, a herbarium, botanical museum and institute. More than 5,000 species of plant grow in the sections built to suit ecological characters and requirement of afforestation. At the International Friendship Plant Hall there are 8,326 plants of 3,147 species presented to the great leaders President Kim Il Sung and General Secretary Kim Jong Il by heads of state, party leaders and prominent figures of different countries. Those plants are well preserved and multiplied in a large quantity to spread across the country. A brisk scientific research has been made at the garden. In the past period the garden cultivated and propagated through research above 100 million cryptomerias, 3,500,000 eucommia ulmoides trees and 1,754,800 trees of 20 other species of economic value to send to different parts of the country. It also brought out and distributed 100,000 botanical specimens and 600,000 copies of 60 odd books, among them " Botany of Korea for Afforestation" (parts on flowers and trees) and " Edible Herb of Korea" (vols. 1-3). The botanical institute has registered big achievements in the research into increasing gene resources of the nation. Today the Central Botanical Garden of the DPRK develops scientific and technological exchange with over 100 botanical gardens in 20 odd countries including Russia, China, Cuba and the Czech Republic.

KCNA on U.S. ballyhoo about " threats" and its ulterior intention

Pyongyang, April 30 (KCNA ) -- Dangerous speculations are rife in the United States in the wake of one more missile testlaunch by India and Pakistan. The United States claims that the missiles testfired in the two countries were "developed" with the DPRK's technology. While crying over nuclear and missile " threats" from the DPRK, it has gone so far as to highlight the " necessity" of "tough policy" and " preventive attack." Its taking issue with the DPRK over missile development in South Asia is due to its imprudent intention. The United States invented and spread a fiction of nuclear and missile " threats" from the DPRK. It is trying to use the missile testfire in South Asia for an anti-DPRK compaign. It must not go unnoticed that while raising cheers over the recent 300 km range missile test by the South Korean authorities, it is groundlessly pulling up the DPRK over the missile development in South Asia. This double-dealing tactics of the U.S. is the revelation of its ulterior intention to keep the DPRK from developing missiles and instigate the South Korean authorities to more reckless war preparations against the DPRK. As long as the United States does not give up its hostile policy towards the DPRK, the latter will invariably pursue its independent missile policy, its legitimate right, with redoubled efforts.

FM spokesman on Israeli President's remarks

Pyongyang, April 30 (KCNA) -- A spokesman for the DPRK Foreign Ministry was interviewed by KCNA today as regards Israel's recent argument about the DPRK's " missile issue." He said: The Israeli President groundlessly asserted at a press conference on April 27 that the DPRK's missile programme posed a threat to peace. It is the height of sarcasm. Recently Israel decided to unilaterally close the Palestinian office in east Kuds, gravely threatening the mid-east peace process, only to invite a strong criticism from Arab and Islamic nations. Though, it shamelessly argues about the DPRK's " threat to peace." It is its intention to wreck the mid-east peace process and Judaize Kuds so as to finally dismiss Palestine's claim to it. Oblivious of its awkward position, Israel provoked others impudently in an attempt to cover up this insidious intention, which has been fully revealed. But, it would be well advised to think twice for genuine peace in the Middle East.
