The audience included director of the KPA general political department Jo Myong Rok, chief of the KPA general staff Kim Yong Chun, Minister of the People's Armed Forces Kim Il Chol, generals Hyon Chol Hae and Pak Jae Gyong and general officers of the KPA. Secretaries Kim Kuk Thae and Kim Yong Sun and first vice department directors Jang Song Thaek and Choe Chun Hwang of the WPK Central Committee were also among the audience.
The light comedy produced by the creating staff and artistes of the studio mainly shows the noble revolutionary comradeship of the commanding officers of the KPA who always mix with soldiers, share weal and woe with them and take parental care of them.
Kim Jong Il congratulated the artistes on their successful performance. He noted with great satisfaction that the creating staff and artistes of the studio had splendidly produced the light comedy of great cognitive and educational importance with high revolutionary zeal and militant spirit. As the light comedy shows, the powerful unity between officers and men, which cannot be achieved by any military science and technology, enabled the KPA to win victory after victory in rigorous revolutionary wars, he added.
He said all the commanding officers of the KPA with warm revolutionary comradeship not only value and love soldiers as they would their own brothers and children but also set practical examples in all aspects of work and life. He highly praised the creating staff and artistes of the studio for actively encouraging the soldiers and civilians to strengthen the revolutionary armed forces and implement the party's military line through vigorous revolutionary art activities.
He described the revolutionary and militant artistes of the studio as soldiers who stand at the outpost of the ideological front and work to model the whole army on the Juche idea. He gave them important tasks they should fulfil in art creation and activity.

DPRK led by Kim Jong Il lauded

Pyongyang, May 8 (KCNA) -- Alva Chavez, director of the board of the International Institute of the Juche Idea and a member of the executive committee of the Latin American Institute of the Juche Idea, attended round-table talks, hosted by the France-Korea Friendship Association, on the way home from his visit to the DPRK.
At the talks he said the Korean people are now consolidating the independent national economy on the basis of strong defence power under the wise leadership of the great Kim Jong Il. He also briefed the participants on the Korean people's struggle to firmly defend the Korean-style socialism in the teeth of the U.S and other reactionary forces' vicious moves and to drive the U.S. aggressors out of South Korea and reunify the country. Thanks to the correct line and wise leadership of Kim Jong Il Korea will surely be reunified and become a powerful socialist nation.

Legislation to check evasion of military service

Pyongyang, May 8 (KCNA) -- The South Korean authorities on May 3 passed through the "defense committee of the National Assembly" a bill on making it "compulsory" for high-ranking officials to open their record of military service to the public, according to a radio report from Seoul.
The bill calls upon not only the high-ranking officials but also their sons and grandsons to report to the "office of military manpower" their enlistment and discharge from the "ROK" army and the date and reason, if they were exempted from conscription. The authorities set up the "joint investigation headquarters" to check the evasion of conscription growing among the South Korean people, and are getting overheated in arresting evaders.

S. Korean satellite launch ends in failure

Pyongyang, May 8 (KCNA) -- A South Korean satellite, manufactured and launched by the United States, failed to go into orbit, a news report said. The satellite "Orion" was made by the Hughes Inc. of the United States and "Delta 3" rocket carrying it by the Boeing.
The satellite-carrying rocket was launched at an airforce base in Florida, the U.S., on May 5 after more than four delays from April, but failed to go into orbit due to fuel exhaustion after the second-stage ignition. This failure, the fourth in recent one month, caused a loss of 2 billion dollars only in cost. Foreign news reports said that the failure seriously affected not only the satellite business of South Korea but also the U.S. aerospace industry.

Russian ambassador gives reception

Pyongyang, May 8 (KCNA) -- Russian ambassador to Korea Valery Denisov gave a reception at the embassy on May 7 on the occasion of the 54th anniversary of the victory of the Soviet people in the great patriotic war. Present on invitation were Ri In Gyu, vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ri Song Ho, chairman of the DPRK-Russia Friendship Association and vice-chairman of the Korean Committee for Cultural Relations with Foreign Countries, and officials concerned. S. Korean students' activities supported

Pyongyang, May 8 (KCNA) -- The central committee of the Kim Il Sung Socialist Youth League published a statement on Friday supporting South Korean students who have joined in workers and peasants' massive struggle for vital rights and democracy.
The statement said: All the youth and students in the northern half of the country extend full support and encouragement to the South Korean students' vigorous anti-outsider, anti-"government" struggle in firm solidarity with workers and peasants , considering it to be a very righteous and just struggle for independence and democracy of society and vital rights.
The South Korean authorities are resorting to a fascist repression of it in a bid to keep students, who always stand in the van of struggle against injustice, from organizationally joining in the anti-outsider, anti-"government" struggle of workers and peasants and to save themselves from the present ruling crisis.
The c.c., the Kim Il Sung Socialist Youth League, in the name of all youths and students in the northern half of the country, bitterly condemns the South Korean authorities' harsh suppression of the students who are waging the just struggle for vital rights and democracy together with workers and peasants.
The South Korean authorities should immediately stop their fascist suppression of the just struggle of students and other people and drop the flunkeyist, treacherous and murderous "restructuring" and lay-off at once.

Major ways for great national unity

Pyongyang, May 8 (KCNA) -- Travel, contacts, dialogues and alliance among Koreans in the north, south and overseas are major ways for attaining great national unity, says Rodong Sinmun in a by-lined article today.
The article continues: If all the Koreans in the north, south and overseas make travels, have contacts and strengthen alliance with each other on the basis of patriotism they can deepen mutual understandings and trust and pool their will and efforts for the common goal of the nation. In order to develop contacts and dialogues between the north and the south the anti-reunification institutional devices in South Korea, including the "security law" and "Intelligence Service", should be removed and a new reunification-oriented phase of dialogue be created.
The South Korean rulers, preoccupied with the anti-reunification divisionist moves regardless of reunification, are seeking dialogue not for reunification but for division and an anti-national dialogue for inciting antagonism and confrontation between fellow countrymen. All Koreans at home and abroad should wage an active struggle against the criminal moves of the South Korean rulers to monopolize inter-Korean dialogue and use it for anti-reunification separatist purpose.
The article calls for checking and foiling the moves of the anti-reunification forces to suppress and obliterate the south headquarters of the National Alliance for the Country's Reunification (Pomminryon) and the South Korean Federation of University Student Councils. The article calls upon the entire nation to support and keep pace with each other in the struggle for great national unity and national reunification, transcending differences in ism and assertions, and strengthen the three-party solidarity of the north, south and overseas sides.

Science news

Pyongyang, May 8 (KCNA) -- The robot engineering research institute of Kim Chaek University of Technology has recently developed a digital program for processing blades of turbines or propellers. The program makes it possible to precisely process by computer spiral parts that require sophisticated technical control.

The zoology institute of the biology branch under the academy of sciences has brought a system of rearing muskrat to completion. The acclimation of muskrate has opened a vista for increasing animals of economic value and mass-producing musk.
The soft coal mining engineering institute of the coal science branch under the Academy of Sciences has developed new props. The props are to be installed by driving them into the ceiling of the pit. As they are calculated geometrically and dynamically, safety is fully guaranteed. The new props will save large quantities of prop materials.

Japan's moves for invading Asia

Pyongyang, May 8 (KCNA) -- Rodong Sinmun today comes out with a signed commentary on the recent adoption of bills on "Japan-U.S. Defense Cooperation Guidelines" at the House of Representatives of Japan.
The news analyst says: The adoption of the bills shows that the Japanese reactionaries have already gone beyond the danger line in their moves to realize their ambition for overseas expansion through an open and close military tie-up with the United States. At this juncture, Japan can dispatch the "Self-Defense Forces" to any area of the Asia-Pacific region under the signboard of "military cooperation" with the United States in "case of an unexpected incident."
It is an invariable design of the Japanese reactionaries to attain their old dream of "greater east Asia co-prosperity sphere". While adopting the legislation for the overseas dispatch of the "Self-Defense Forces," they are pushing ahead with the plan to equip "SDF" with modern and long-distance means of war.
Their moves will wreck peace and stability in Asia, aggravate the regional situation and touch off a new arms race. They must abandon their ambition for overseas expansion and reinvasion of Asia and refrain from aggravating the situation in Asia.

U.S. military tyranny flayed

Pyongyang, May 8 (KCNA) -- The United States should stop high-handed military tyranny which goes against the aspiration of mankind and the trend of the era of independence, says Rodong Sinmun today in a signed commentary on the Yugoslav incident.
The reckless NATO strikes against Yugoslavia, which the world has witnessed for the first time since the end of the Cold War, represent the height of the U.S.-led imperialists' military tyranny and state terrorism as well as the most high-handed and outrageous war moves, observes the commentary. The culprit of NATO offensive operation against Yugoslavia is the United States and its strikes against Yugoslavia are, in essence, war actions of the United States.
Referring to the reason why the United States is attacking Yugoslavia under the name of NATO, the commentary says: Military tyranny of the insolent and megalomaniac United States, self-styled "world's sole superpower", has reached its zenith.
If the U.S. high-handed military tyranny is to be connived at or tolerated, the second and third Yugoslav crisis will break out in any region of the world as a consequence of the war actions against Yugoslavia. It is, therefore, beyond doubt that they will badly affect human civilization and world peace.
The Yugoslav crisis eloquently proves that each country should have powerful self-reliant defence forces equipped with defensive and offensive means to creditably defend its sovereignty and national security. Entirely justifiable is the policy of the Worker's Party of Korea on giving priority to the army, its line and principles of building self-reliant revolutionary armed forces and Korean-style military countermeasures.
The commentary calls upon the world's progressive people to discard fear and illusion about the United States and concentrate the anti-imperialist, anti-war struggle to defend peace on the U.S.

S. Korean authorities' suppression of labor movement

Pyongyang, May 8 (KCNA) -- The South Korean authorities are creating a terror-ridden atmosphere to put down the righteous struggle of the workers. Commenting on this, Rodong Sinmun today says: The South Korean chief executive declared that he would steadfastly stick to the principle of not tolerating the recent strike of workers, branding it as "illegal" and "violent". "Prime minister" Kim Jong Pil also issued a repressive order to "sternly deal with the strike of workers" and crack down upon it without hesitation.
This is a premeditated repressive offensive to put down the ever mounting struggle of workers and an unpardonable challenge to them demanding democracy and vital rights. It is entirely just for the South Korean workers to struggle against the reactionary labor policy of the authorities which forces non-right, poverty, sufferings and death on them under the treacherous trusteeship and their moves to obliterate the right to existence.
It is a most hideous illegal act and an unpardonable crime that the South Korean authorities deny the workers three elementary rights to labor and carry out "restructuring" and lay-off to bring hardship, misfortunes and death to them. The reality clearly shows that as long as the treacherous and anti-social misrule of the rulers bearing the mask of "people" remains in force the South Korean workers and people can neither get rid of the present miserable plight nor escape from a tragic death.

U.S. nuclear war plan

Pyongyang, May 8 (KCNA) -- The United States mapped out an operational plan to attack the Korean peninsula as well as the Chinese mainland including Manchuria in 1953 immediately after the Korea War by massively using nuclear weapons, according to secret operational plan and telegrams of the U.S. far east command, which were disclosed some time ago in the United States.
The plan aimed at coping with the "recurrence of Korean War" included a proposal on using 50 to 200 nukes in case of nuclear assault and a three-phased strategy for invasion of the north.
The recently disclosed nuclear war plan vividly illustrates that the United States has long dreamed of a nuclear war in the Asia-Pacific region including the Korean peninsula, Minju Joson in a signed commentary today observes. It continues: The United States still persists in its moves to start a nuclear war in the Korean peninsula and its surrounding areas and they have reached a dangerous phase.
Despite the fact that the true colors of the U.S. as the arch criminal in increasing nuclear threat have been brought to light it is insisting on "inspection" of the DPRK's "underground nuclear facility," raising a hue and cry over the non-existent "nuclear suspicion."
This row of the United States is intended to build up public opinion as regards "nuclear suspicion" in a bid to divert elsewhere the world's attention focused on it and find an excuse to provoke a nuclear war in and around the Korean peninsula. The United States should face up to reality and stop reckless moves for a nuclear war.

Anju Coal Mine Children's Guard Detachment

Pyongyang, May 8 (KCNA) -- The Sinri Senior Middle School in Mundok county, South Phyongan Province, was named after the Anju Coal Mine Children's Guard Detachment and a group sculpture of the children's guard detachment was unveiled with due ceremony on Friday.
During the Fatherland Liberation War, members of the Children's Union in the area formed the Anju Coal Mine Children's Guard Detachment and bravely fought against the U.S. aggressors and their stooges.
Conveyed at the ceremony was General Secretary Kim Jong Il's thanks to the teachers, who have distinguished themselves in bringing up pupils to be boundlessly loyal and dutiful to the party and the leader and in teaching them and to the pupils of the school, who set examples in the study and in the good conduct movement.
The ceremony called upon all the teachers and schoolchildren to become loyalists and human bombs that devotedly defend the respected Marshal Kim Jong Il like the members of the children's guard detachment who bravely fought for the great leader President Kim Il Sung and the country in the last Fatherland Liberation War.
Present at the ceremony were Ri Kil Song, chief secretary of the south Phyongan provincial committee of the Worker's Party of Korea, Choe Ki Ryong, Minister of Education, and other officials.

Book on rules of wartime conduct released

Pyongyang, May 8 (KCNA) -- The South Korean authorities published and distributed a book titled "National Defense Involving People" on Thursday as part of accelerated anti-north war preparations, according to a report from Seoul. Contained in the book which has 59 articles are a series of rules of wartime conduct, including deployment and barrack discipline of "ROK" army units and conduct rules of "homeland reserve forces" under mobilization order. The fact shows that the South Korean war hawks are putting war preparations against the north into a more concrete form. But only irrevocable destruction is waiting for those seeking a way out in invading the north.

NDFSK Pyongyang mission holds press conference

Pyongyang, May 8 (KCNA) -- The Pyongyang mission of the National Democratic Front of South Korea (NDFSK) called a press conference on Friday as regards the recent U.S. full- dress moves to establish the "Theatre Missile Defense" system.
Describing the moves as a replica of the notorious "star wars project" in the 1980s, chief of the mission Pak Kwang Gi denounced it as a criminal act of openly declaring the beginning of the second Cold War era to drive the world once again into a nightmare of arms race.
An appeal to the governments, political parties and public organizations of different countries and international organizations, a letter to UN secretary general Kofi Annan and a protest letter to U.S. President Bill Clinton, all in the name of the c.c. Of the NDFSK, were distributed at the conference.
The appeal expresses the NDFSK's belief that the governments, political parties, organizations and international organizations will check and frustrate the U.S. moves to revive Cold War through a vigorous anti-U.S. And anti-war struggle.
The letter to the UN secretary general says that the UN should call to account the U.S. moves to establish the TMD system which caused new Cold War and take a resolute measure to check and frustrate the moves in conformity with its mission as a world body working for world peace and security.
The protest letter to the U.S. President strongly demands that the U.S. immediately stop establishing the criminal TMD system, discontinue its maneuverings of aggression and war in South Korea and all other places that are subjected to its domination and intervention and withdraw its aggression forces without delay.
