Struggle of S. Korean unionists

Pyongyang, May 15 (KCNA) -- More than 3,000 unionists of the National Federation of Metal Industry Workers unions under the South Korean Confederation of Trade Unions held a meeting in Seoul on May 14, calling for a stop to layoff, according to reports from Seoul. At the meeting they denounced the "government" for turning aside from massive unemployment and urged it to have negotiations with the trade unions calling for vital rights.
Over 8,000 unionists under the federation came to Seoul from 130 workshops across South Korea and held a meeting and demonstration against the murderous "restructuring" on May 13. And then, they pitched 250 large tents on the bank of the Han River and went on an all-night sit-down strike. Unionists of the hospital attached to Jeonbug National University entered a strike calling for wage increase on May 14.

Cohen's ill-boding remarks

Pyongyang, May 15 (KCNA) -- The U.S. Defense Secretary, William Cohen, said at the Senate Appropriation Committee on May 11 that the United States is ready to hurl military force needed for contingencies on the Korean peninsula in the shortest time, according to a news report.
He added that he took a "security step" following the move of one U.S. aircraft carrier from the sea near the Korean peninsula to Adriatic Sea after the Kosovo crisis and that it is intended to cope with emergencies on the peninsula and in Asia in a very short time by mobilizing military forces from the U.S. mainland bases. His remarks are getting on nerves of the DPRK, fraught with a very dangerous war hysteria of the U.S. war hawks to bring even to the Korean peninsula dark clouds of war which the U.S.-led NATO has inflicted upon Yugoslavia.

NATO air raids on Yugoslavia should be stopped

Pyongyang, May 15 (KCNA) -- Ryom Sun Gil, chairman of the central committee of the General Federation of Trade Unions of Korea, issued a statement to the press on May 14 in connection with escalating U.S.-led NATO air raids on Yugoslavia.
The U.S.-led NATO attack on Yugoslavia is an extreme arbitrariness violating the UN Charter and the recognized principle of the international law, the statement said, and went on: The U.S.-led NATO forces struck and destroyed a number of factories, enterprises, schools, hospitals, kindergartens and even running buses, not military objects, and bombed even the Chinese embassy, and tried to defend themselves by saying "it is possible damage" and "mistake."
All the facts clearly prove that "human rights", "humanitarianism" and "peace" on the lips of organizers of aggression and accomplices are a mask to cover up their arbitrary acts to dominate the world. The more the U.S.-led NATO forces escalate their aggression, the deeper they will be driven into dilemma and the bitterer their political, moral and military defeat will be.
The Korean working class and other people express firm support and solidarity for the just struggle of the Yugoslav working class and other people to defend the dignity and sovereignty of the country. We strongly urge the aggressors to clearly see the situation, lend an ear to unanimous denunciation by the Yugoslav people and peace-loving people of the world and stop the unlawful attack at once.

S. Korean worker's struggle supported

Pyongyang, May 15 (KCNA) -- Rodong Sinmun today carries a signed commentary on the second general strike South Korean workers have started with a strike of the Federation of Hospital Workers Unions.
The news analyst says: The South Korean Confederation of Trade Unions strongly urged the authorities to stop the layoff and reduce working hours with the beginning of the second general strike, and the strike is expected to spread all over the country. The second general strike of South Korean workers is an eruption of pent-up hatred and resentment against the ruling quarters, stemming from their will to live a life worthy of humanity.
They drew lessons from their strike again that they should not have the slightest illusion about the ruling quarters and "dialogue and negotiation" on their lips are no more than appeasement and deception merely to put down resentment of workers. This struggle resumed on the occasion of the anniversary of the May 18 Kwangju Uprising shows that their struggle will be strengthened as long as the colonial fascist rule of the U.S. and the treacherous misrule of the authorities are sustained in South Korea.

Prelude to war

Pyongyang, May 15 (KCNA) -- Recently the U.S. war hawks are resorting to arms buildup and keeping war posture, alleging that "military vacuum" in South Korea was caused by the Yugoslav crisis and "emergencies" May be created by someone. Commenting on this, Rodong Sinmun today says: Their remarks are a pretext to justify the moves for another war of aggression on Korea and bring a second Yugoslav crisis to the Korean peninsula.
Regarding the peninsula as a vantage for realizing its ambition for domination over Asia, the United States has set it as a primary target of its reactionary Asia strategy and the main task for strategic predominance in this region to ignite a second Korean war and seize the peninsula. The U.S. Defense Secretary said the U.S. forces are prepared for three limited wars, which means to unleash another war on the Korean peninsula along with the attack on Yugoslavia.
Now that the United States is attempting to unleash a second war of aggression on Korea on the plea of the Yugoslav crisis, the DPRK cannot but keep full readiness and sharply watch every U.S. movement.

Demonstration of S. Korean unionists

Pyongyang, May 15 (KCNA) -- More than 4,000 unionists of the National Federation of Metal Industry Workers Unions and the National Federation of Public Transport and Service Trade Unions under the South Korean Confederation of Trade Unions staged a demonstration in Jongro Street no. 2 on the afternoon of Friday, according to a radio report from Seoul.
Unionists of the National Federation of Metal Industry Workers Unions held a meeting against the South Korean authorities' unilateral "restructuring" before making a peaceful march up to the Myongdong Cathedral. When riot police blocked their march, they protested against it and went over to the demonstration. The fascist clique sent 34 police companies more than 4,000 strong to crack down on the demonstration. Demonstrators resisted the police, showering stones upon them.

Rice transplantation starts in DPRK

Pyongyang, march 15 (KCNA) -- Rice transplanting has begun in rural areas in the west coasts of Korea. Farms of Yoltusamcholli and Unjon plains are now operating rice-transplanting machines at full capacity while putting harrowing and major farming work ahead of transplantation. Having worked out concrete daily plans for each field, they are effectively putting all processes into gear, ensuring the required number of plants for each Phyong (one Phyong is six feet square) and their stalks.

Solidarity demonstration in Denmark

Pyongyang, May 15 (KCNA) -- The Denmark-DPRK Friendship Association Sponsored a demonstration of solidarity with the Korean People's Cause of National Reunification in Copenhagen on May 1. Demonstrators marched on the main street of the city, chanting "the U.S., take hands off Korea" and other slogans and carrying flags of the DPRK and slogan-boards reading:"Support to proposal for founding Democratic Confederal Republic of Koryo", "Korea is one" and "U.S. troops, get out of South Korea".

U.S. ambition for hegemonistic domination

Pyongyang, May 15 (KCNA) -- Minju Joson in a commentary today denounces the United States for scheming to establish the "Theatre Missile Defense" system (TMD) in east Asia in a bid to realize its ambition for world supremacy.
Some time ago, the U.S. Defense Department submitted to the congress a report on establishing the TMD system in Japan, South Korea and other areas of east Asia on the pretext of "coping with possible 'missile attack' by North Korea," and the congress urged the establishment of "joint early warning system" among the U.S., Japan and South Korea on the same pretext.
The news analyst of the paper says: This openly revealed the U.S. ambition for hegemonistic domination over east Asia. The TMD plan is aimed at ensuring the U.S. military supremacy over any regions of the world on the signboard of "defense" following the changed reality and at dominating these regions and the rest of the world by relying on it.
It is the U.S. strategy to take hold on east Asia, establish the sphere of domination over the Asia-Pacific region with it as a springboard and, moreover, dominate the world. It is as clear as noonday that military balance in east Asia will be seriously destroyed and a new arms race and cold war be caused by the U.S. moves to establish the TMD system in the region.
The moves, contrary to the trend of the times toward peace and detente, can never be justified.

Achievements in geological prospecting

Pyongyang, May 15 (KCNA) -- Geological prospecting workers have worked out a detailed topographical map for geological prospecting of the country before finding various mineral resources and prospecting promising areas to be developed.
Despite hard conditions, geological prospecting workers and officials climbed hundreds of steep mountains and introduced new methods in surveying to make a more detailed and correct topographical map. With this map they ensured the scientific accuracy of all prospecting and increased prospecting efficiency so as to comprehensively develop and utilize underground resources and land for the building of a powerful nation.
Geological prospectors in south Phyongan, south Hamgyong and north Hwanghae provinces increased the estimated amount of coal deposits of coal mines and found more areas to develop new coal mines by prospecting new areas. Prospecting teams under the Jagang Provincial Prospecting Management Bureau have found more coal resources with a view to operating local industrial factories and improving the standard of people's living.
Surveying teams in south Phyongan and other provinces found a lot of mineral resources of fertilizers for agricultural production. The western area iron prospecting corps secured the foundations to develop new iron ore mines. Geological prospectors in north Phyongan and north and south Hwanghae provinces discovered promising and high-grade nonferrous minerals and more deposits of ore mines.
Geological prospectors found mineral resources of different kinds including alloy element needed to develop ultra-modern science and technology.
