Kim Jong Il gives on-site guidance to Jagang Province

Pyongyang, June 17 (KCNA) -- General Secretary Kim Jong Il directed the work in different fields of the national economy in Jagang Province. Accompanying him were chief secretary of the Jagang provincial committee of the WPK Yon Hyong Muk, secretary Jon Pyong Ho and first vice department directors Pak Song Bong, Ri Yong Chol and Choe Chun Hwang of the WPK Central Committee. During his on-site guidance General Secretary Kim Jong Il inspected the Hyangha Revolutionary Site, large hydroelectric power stations, newly-built minor power stations, industrial establishments, co-op farms and other units.
He went to the Hyangha Revolutionary Site. The Hyangha Revolutionary Site is a historic place where the President Kim Il Sung wisely commanded the counteroffensive operation in December 1950 in the period of the Fatherland Liberation War. Kim Jong Il said that education in the site should be intensified to arm the servicemen and civilians more thoroughly with the revolutionary idea of the president.
He also guided the work at the Jangjagang Power Station and the Kanggye Youth Power Station, the nation's giant electricity producers. Noting that workers and technicians at the stations have done a lot of things over the past years to meet the nation's demand for electricity, he gave a high appreciation to them. Then he met innovators and pep-talked to them and posed for a souvenir picture with them.
After that he went round Janggang Kunmin Youth Power Station no.3, Pukchon Power Station no.2 and other minor power stations, which have been built by the province itself. He expressed great satisfaction at those newly-built stations and highly appreciated the builders.
Kim Jong Il guided the work at the Amnokgang Tire Plant and Kanggye Tractor Complex. He was deeply satisfied to see various production processes and had a photograph taken with innovators there. Then he visited the Kosan Co-op Farm in Mapho city, Janggang County Township Co-op Farm and Mapho Cocoon Farm to guide the work there. While looking round the self-reliance center, greenhouse and fields of the farm, he highly praised agricultural workers for their devoted efforts.
After acquainting himself in detail with the overall economic performance in Jagang Province, he laid down on the spot highly important tasks which serve as a guideline in placing the national economy in the province on a new plane.
He proposed tasks to further develop the power industry. He said that the existing large power stations should run at full capacity to fully meet the rapidly increasing requirements for electricity. He underscored the need to improve the management of equipment and technical management so as to ensure full capacity generator operation and widely introduce new advanced technology to steadily raise the efficiency of water turbine generators.
Calling for the construction of more minor power stations as well as large power stations to increase the electricity production, he said: It is very gratifying that in recent years Jagang Province built 332 minor power stations by itself to solve the electricity problem and it keeps building many power Stations to round off the electrical heating.
This stirring reality clearly proves the validity and vitality of the Worker's Party of Korea policy on extensively building minor power stations along with large ones. As rivers and streams are found everywhere in our country, it is necessary to build economically efficient minor power stations in good quality as Jagang Province has done.
Kim Jong Il also put forward tasks to keep production going at a high level. He called for steadily boosting the production by actively tapping its potentials in the revolutionary spirit of self-reliance.
Saying that if officials meticulously organize economic performance in keeping with a high degree of enthusiasm of the masses, it is possible to significantly increase the production, he stressed the need to boost the production of manufactured goods for different domains of the national economy and thus contribute to the building of a powerful nation.
He elaborated on the tasks to lift the production of grain, live-stock products, industrial crops and consumer goods. He set forth tasks to thoroughly establish cultured practices in both life and production and improve supply service for the working people.
At the end of his on-site guidance, he, together with workers, saw an art performance given by workers in Kanggye area. He expressed great satisfaction at the art performance symbolic of worker's revolutionary and militant spirit and highly appreciated their successful performance.

Kim Jong Il is supreme incarnation of national character

Pyongyang, June 17 (KCNA) -- June 19 will mark the 2nd anniversary of the publication of the famous work of General Secretary Kim Jong Il "On Preserving the Juche Character and National Character of the Revolution and Construction." On this day Kim Yong Dae, chairman of the central committee of the Korean Social Democratic Party, was interviewed by a deputy chief editor of Minju Joson, organ of the presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly and the cabinet of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, on Tuesday.
At the interview he made a statement entitled "Respected Marshal Kim Jong Il is a supreme incarnation of national character." Kim Yong Dae said that the national character finds its expression in all aspects of human life and social activity such as feeling and emotion, character and morality and language and custom of all members of the nation.
He went on: Kim Jong Il noted that sustaining the national character means preserving and developing the good qualities of the nation and embodying them in all spheres of social life. The question of preserving the national character is a matter vital to the rise and fall of the nation. Every nation should hold aloft the banner of valuing and maintaining national character. Only by doing so can a nation survive and prosper.
It is the mental character of the Korean people that they mercilessly beat back the aggressors who encroach upon sacred national sovereignty and dignity even a bit. The Korean people's spirit of national independence is characterized by the spirit of devotedly defending the leader, the spirit of overcoming all difficulties through self-reliance and the spirit of becoming human bombs and bullets.
"A man is strong if he trusts in himself, weak if he relies on others." "He who relies on himself will prosper = he who relies on others will perish." "Live our own way fight our own way, create our own way." These are some of Kim Jong Il's aphorisms replete with the spirit of national independence. These serve as the flesh and blood of the Korean people and the mainstay of their view on life and world outlook.
The Korean people are looking upon Kim Jong Il as the supreme incarnation of national character as he restored the legitimacy, eternity, purity and superiority of the history of the Korean nation. Saying that the Korean people sing songs in their national melody, dance to the national tune, prefer to national style and live their own way, the chairman stressed the exploit performed by Kim Jong Il by bringing national character into full bloom is immortal.

Rodong Sinmun on Japan's unbridled militarist measure

Pyongyang, June 17 (KCNA) -- A series of steps being taken by Japan for overseas aggression have come in for criticism in Rodong Sinmun today.
Recalling that recently Japan decided a legislation to designate "Hinomaru flag" and "Kimigayo" as the national flag and anthem and referred it to the discussion at the diet following the adoption of the legislation for implementing the "Japan-U.S. Defence Cooperation Guidelines," the daily says in a commentary: This is an undisguised challenge to the world's people including the Asian people who are aspiring after independence and peace.
The Japanese government took a step of designating "Hinomaru flag" and "Kimigayo" as the national flag and anthem against the backdrop of the Japanese militarist forces' ever more blatant moves to launch an overseas aggression, having revealed their true colors as a real entity of aggression. This is a very ill-boding step.
"Hinomaru flag" and "Kimigayo" were a medium and symbol used by Japanese in aggression. However, the Japanese did not legalize "Hinomaru flag" and "Kimigayo" as the national flag and anthem, though they had been customarily used for a long time. The present Japanese reactionary ruling quarters, however, are working hard to legalize them as the national flag and anthem, putting the Japanese imperialists into the shade.
This proves that the Japanese militarist forces are going to set out on an overseas aggression, flying "Hinomaru flag" and singing "Kimigayo" as the "imperial army" did in the past. It will definitely lead them to ruin. The Japanese reactionaries are well advised to calm hysterics of suicidal aggression.

Merry Tano festival

Pyongyang, June 17 (KCNA) -- June 18 marks the Tano festival in Korea or the May festival which comes on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month. The Tano festival is one of the biggest folklore holidays in Korea. On this day all people, man and woman, young and old, across the country enjoy folklore games.
From ancient times our ancestors used to celebrate the day to have a good rest after toilsome rice transplantation and spring sowing to be followed by backbreaking weeding. On this holiday people used to take rice cake mixed with fresh marsh plant leaves and cake made of rice flour and wormwood paste and other special food, while enjoying Korean wrestling, swing and other popular games. This tradition has been handed down till today.
When the Tano festival comes round, Moran Hill and Mt. Taesong in the capital city of Pyongyang and the pleasure grounds in other parts of the country are abustle with holiday makers. Wrestling, swing and other games take place to please them. Wrestling and archery matches mainly draw male applicants, while seesaw and swing competitions attract women. A winner in the wrestling match walks round, his chest thrown out, after receiving an ox as a trophy.
Cheerful laughter of women is heard from all sites of swing and seesaw games where they compete with each other in jumping and flying high. Masquerades, tug-of-war, Yut game (four stick game) and other folklore games also take place here and there to add the gaiety of the festival.
On this day agricultural workers look back with pride on the farm work done in good time, quite optimistic about a rich harvest. Folklore holidays and games are promoted and further developed and enriched to suit the contemporary aesthetic taste.

Kim Il Sung praised as military genius

Pyongyang, June 17 (KCNA) -- D. D. Shastri, chairman of the Coordinating Center of Trade Unions of India, made public a statement on June 9 on the occasion of the 5th anniversary of the demise of the President Kim Il Sung.
He said the respected President Kim Il Sung is the founder of the Korean Revolutionary Armed Forces, the invincible and iron-willed commander who led the two revolutionary wars against the formidable imperialist enemies to brilliant victory, and the military genius who created Juche-oriented military idea, strategy, tactics and war methods.
Kim Il Sung was well known as young commander who led the rigorous war against the Japanese aggressors to victory, and later was praised by humankind as peerlessly brilliant commander after defeating the U.S.-led allied forces, he said, and went on: The world war history knows many famous commanders and military strategists, but no one can match President Kim Il Sung, a veteran and iron-willed commander, who wisely commanded great many battles, small and big, sending a tremor through the enemies and gave a crushing defeat to the imperialist aggression army which boasted of being the "strongest in the world."
Korean style socialism will win victory after victory as long as Kim Il Sung's exploits in army building remain shining and there is Marshal Kim Jong Il who leads the army, considering them as its lifeline.

Present there were the general secretary of the Socialist Party of Peru and officials of political parties, social organizations and friendship organizations.
The general secretary of the Socialist Party of Peru in his speech said that in Korea, the leader, the party and the masses became a harmonious whole, which cannot be found anywhere in the world, thanks to the outstanding Juche idea of President Kim Il Sung and the benevolent and all-embracing politics of the great leader Kim Jong Il.
With this great idea and the might of unbreakable unity Korea defeated the Japanese and the U.S. Imperialists and won a historic victory and is now firmly defending and developing socialism as an ideologically and militarily powerful country, he added.
The chairman of the Peru-Korea Institute of Culture and Friendship said the great truth of the Juche philosophy that man is master of everything and decides everything has been fully proved in the socialist construction of Korea.
He further said: Today a great number of the progressive political parties and figures accepted the Juche idea which was founded by Generalissimo Kim Il Sung and is being developed and enriched by Marshal Kim Jong Il, an outstanding thinker and theoretician, as the guiding idea of the times and are applying it to the realization of the cause of independence. The independence of Peru will have to be realized, guided by this idea.

S. Korean unionists' strike

Pyongyang, June 17 (KCNA) -- More than 24,000 unionists under the Federation of South Korean Trade Unions Wednesday went on a general strike for limited hours to protest against the prosecution's "inducement to strike" of the mint company trade union, according to a radio report from Seoul.
The general strike followed a "national rally of workers for practicing general strike" with the attendance of over 10,000 unionists in Seoul. Cadres of the South Korean Confederation of Trade Unions who were on a hunger strike in Seoul from June 14 called for probing the truth behind the "inducement to strike" and dissolving the "Council for Public Security" and declared that they would go on a strike from June 17 and hold protest rallies across South Korea.

Korean dance

Pyongyang, June 17 (KCNA) -- In Korea which is blessed with a long history of civilization, dance is regarded as the oldest of major art forms. Korean dance, a legacy of the Korean nation, which mirrors the people's life feelings, has served as a vigorous and sensitive medium of entertainment and recreation.
In oriental dancing generally, the accent falls upon the movements of the upper part of the body, including arms, in contrast to the western form with postures usually accented on the lower half, such as the feet. Oriental dance movements differ in various countries. Hand movements form the basic factor in southeast Asia.
In Korean dancing, the entire weight is brought upon arm movements by a judicious combination of feet movements. Harmonious bodily movement with an organic combination of the movements of arms and feet is one of the characteristics of Korean dance. Another characteristic is correspondingly expressed in the flow or rhythm. The dance action is, in essence, soft, gentle and life-giving.
Its speed is moderate and its rhythm is delicate and charming. All the movements, large and small, are well-coordinated. Every motion is not confined to a particular region of the body but the rhythm flows to all parts of the body--head, shoulders, hands, waist and feet.
Such rhythm is formed by bodily movements that arise from Korean noble character and emotion. The Korean dance mainly adapted from traditional forms is now at its highest point of development.

Definite end to outsiders in Kosovo called for

Pyongyang, June 17 (KCNA) -- A spokesman for the DPRK Foreign Ministry answered a question put by KCNA today in connection with the Yugoslav crisis entering into a phase of peaceful settlement.
He told KCNA: On June 10 NATO air raids on Yugoslavia stopped and a resolution on the peaceful settlement of the Kosovo dispute was adopted at the UN Security Council as a result of a series of negotiations held by all parties concerned to solve the Kosovo crisis in a peaceful way. This shows the failure of the attempts of the United States and other western countries to violate the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Yugoslavia by force of arms.
Ever since the very start of the NATO invasion of Yugoslavia we have invariably demanded that it be stopped immediately and the Kosovo issue, an internal affair of Yugoslavia, be solved between the parties concerned peacefully through dialogue and negotiations. The Kosovo issue should be settled on the basis of the full guarantee of sovereignty and territorial integrity to Yugoslavia and in the interests of the Yugoslav people.
But developments show that the U.S. and other western countries are still attempting to divide Kosovo and bring it under their permanent control on the pretext of "settling" the Kosovo issue. If a durable peace and security are to be achieved in the Balkans, high-handed and arbitrary practices of outside forces in this region should be definitely terminated.
