1st meeting of DPRK Economists Society

Pyongyang, August 26 (KCNA) -- The first meeting of the Economists Society of the DPRK was held at the Grand People's Study House on August 24 and 25.
The meeting reviewed the achievements made in the study of economic science and education in economics in the past and discussed the issues to enhance the role of the society in improving qualifications of researchers and teachers in the field of economic science and developing the country's economic science in conformity with the requirement of the developing reality.
On the achievements made in the work of the society, the reporter and speakers said that an important success registered in the field of economic science in the past was its contribution to firmly defending the Juche-based idea and theory of the Worker's Party of Korea on the economy and securing a solid foundation for the building of an economically powerful socialist nation despite the anti-socialist moves and economic blockade by the imperialists.
They noted that the level of scientific theories on economics has been raised, many new fields have been found from a Juche-based stand and the method of teaching has been improved to meet the requirements of the reality. As a result, a large number of scientists and experts have been trained in this field.
Turning to the tasks to develop economic science, they underscored the need to solve matters arising in firmly defending and applying the Juche-based idea and theory of the party on the economy in all fields of economic science and the party's idea of building an economically powerful socialist nation and in improving economic guidance and management.

Hwang Son sentenced to prison terms

Pyongyang, August 26 (KCNA) -- The South Korean authorities on August 24 reversed the decision of the first trial at a public trial on an appeal of Hwang Son, a delegate of Hanchongryon (the South Korean Federation of University Student Councils), and sentenced her to two years and six months of prison terms and two years of suspension of qualifications, according to a news report.
She visited Pyongyang last year to participate in the joint excursion to historical relics in the north, an academic symposium and the August 15 pro-reunification events.
The authorities brought against her charges of violation of provisions "special infiltration and escape" and "praise, encouragement, assembly and communication" of the "National Security Law", after accusing her of "secretly visiting the north" on someone's "instruction."

International pro-boxing tournament

Pyongyang, August 26 (KCNA) -- DPRK boxers knocked out their opponents at the international pro-boxing tournament held in china on August 22 under the sponsorship of the Pan-Asia Boxing Association (PABA).

Choe Chol Su, the featherweight champion of the PABA, beat his challenger from the Philippines by a knock-out.

KCNA on absurd "refutation message" of S. Korea

Pyongyang, August 26 (KCNA) -- The "Ministry of National Defense" of South Korea on August 24 opened to the public a "message" refuting the DPRK's just assertion that a new demarcation line should be fixed at the West Sea of Korea.
In the "message" the "ministry" said that it "categorically rejects the north's assertion" and that the "'northern limit line' is an effective maritime demarcation line."
As already known, the June incident at the West Sea of Korea was a premeditated and deliberate armed provocation by the South Korean warhawks insisting on the "northern limit line," which has been recognized by nobody.
The "northern limit line" claimed by the South Korean warmongers can be used by them as a train to ignite a war against the north at the west sea.
It was against this backdrop that the chief delegate of the north side, at the recent general officer-level meeting in Panmunjom, strongly reasserted that a new maritime demarcation line instead of the "northern limit line" should be fixed at an earliest date to keep such serious armed provocation as the June incident from occurring again.
The extension of the Military Demarcation Line in the west sea, a just proposal made by the north side, is irrefutable because it is entirely based on the Armistice Agreement and the international law. It was drawn by extending the provincial boundary line between Hwanghae-do and Kyonggi-do (line A-B) stipulated in the Armistice Agreement to a line equidistant from Korea and China at sea.
This notwithstanding, the South Korean warhawks are imprudently arguing that the "provincial boundary line is meaningless." They really deserve to be called special-class warmongers finding their ways of existence in provoking a war of aggression against the north.
What must not be overlooked is that the "ministry" asserted that the general officer-level meeting is not mandated to discuss the issue of fixing maritime demarcation line between the north and the south of Korea and that the issue should be handled at the north-south joint military commission.
This is nothing but a foul talk of a colonial stooge who is not allowed to say even a word without an order from his master.
The issue of fixing the demarcation line at the West Sea of Korea is an issue related to the Armistice Agreement.
Therefore, it should be discussed between signatories to the agreement, not between the north and south.
The South Korean warhawks are well advised to stop such nonsense and throw away the "refutation message."

Great man's trust in popular masses

Pyongyang, August 26 (KCNA) -- If there be something almighty in the world, it is the popular masses, not "heaven".
This has been the invariable political belief and faith of General Secretary Kim Jong Il in the whole course of leading the revolution and construction.
It posed itself as a difficult task to undertake a ground work at sea when the construction of a long-distance belt-conveyer was proposed in Unryul mine in South Hwanghae Province in Juche 63 (1974). Officials who took charge of the project were at a loss what to do.
Informed of this, Kim Jong Il taught the officials that the task could not be carried out by a few technicians alone and the key to the solution of the matter was to go deep among workers.
A consultative meeting was thus held on the spot with experienced technicians and old workers in attendance.
The discussion came to the conclusion that ground work for piers could be done during the low tide and concrete mixture be thrown in them during the next low tide.
A practical way was found to carry out the difficult job.
This was a vivid manifestation of political belief of Kim Jong Il, who values the popular masses as the most powerful being and solves all problems in reliance upon them. His strong belief was also expressed when the Korean workers succeeded in manufacturing a 10,000-ton press by their own efforts.
The independent industry in Korea, which was making rapid progress in the 1980s urgently needed a 10,000-ton press.
At that time, Kim Jong Il called on the workers of the Ryongsong Associated Machinery Bureau (the then Ryongsong Machinery Complex) and tasked them to manufacture the press, counting on their inexhaustible strength and wisdom.
They wrought such a miracle as making it in a matter of 15 months in the spirit of self-reliance.
There are signs of a new change in the economic construction of Korea. This is thanks to the successful embodiment of the political idea of Kim Jong Il, who is unraveling knotty problems by mixing with the popular masses.
In recent years Korea's economy had to undergo grim trials due to the moves of the imperialists to isolate and stifle the DPRK and repeated natural disasters.
Many countries, including east European countries, are seeking a way out of serious economic crisis in introduction of foreign funds, reform and opening.
But, the DPRK is resolving its problems by rousing the popular masses to action.
This is evidenced by Kim Jong Il's ceaseless on-site guidance to factories, enterprises and agricultural and fishery farms. He sits knee to knee with producer masses and indicates ways of keeping production at a high level and encourages them to perform feats.

Struggle for return of U.S. military bases

Pyongyang, August 26 (KCNA) -- South Korean people are waging a vigorous struggle for the return of U.S. aggression forces' bases in South Korea.
Inhabitants in Kunsan, North Jolla Province, are carrying on a staunch struggle for the return of the U.S. military bases.
The South Korean authorities, yielding to the demand of their master, the U.S., offered land of 2,500,000 Phyong to them as their military bases where war exercises of fighter planes are staged more than 50 times on a daily average, over 150 times at the maximum.
This sparked their relentless struggle to retake the land now used as U.S. forces' bases.
Residents living in the area around Mt. Thaebaek denounced the authorities for forcibly evacuating them from there and building a bombing training ground of the U.S. air force, and demanded its immediate dismantlement.
Meanwhile, the civic meeting for the return of our land used as U.S. military bases, the Citizens Federation for Economic Justice and other organizations have fought demanding the dismantlement and return of the U.S. military bases, charging that the U.S. troops present in South Korea have occupied many facilities and areas free of charge for an indefinite period inflicting heavy damage on inhabitants.
A similar struggle is also waged by inhabitants in Uijongbu, Hwasong and Uiwang, Kyonggi Province, Taegu and other areas.

Japanese government responsible for its past crimes

Pyongyang, August 26 (KCNA) -- Members of the UN sub-commission on protection and promotion of human rights spoke at the discussion of "modern slave," an agenda item of the 51st session of the sub-commission.
The speakers said that Japan has refused to admit the legal responsibility for the issue related to the "comfort women" and honored the memory of the fallen soldiers who differed little from war criminals, giving rise to apprehension as to the revival of militarism in Japan.
As the crimes Japan committed in the past are a matter for which the Japanese government is to blame, it must draw a lesson from the past crimes and discard the attitude of evading the responsibility, they noted.
It is regrettable that the United Nations does not properly deal with the issue related to the "comfort women," i.e. sexual slaves, they said, adding: This is not a matter confined only to Japan but a matter related to the present and future and, therefore, the United Nations should pay more serious attention to this matter.
A representative of the international association against torture, at the discussion of "judicial administration," an agenda item of the session, exposed the human rights violations by the South Korean authorities.
Noting that many political prisoners in South Korea were arrested on charges of the violation of the notorious "National Security Law" which incriminates even the contact with the fellow countrymen, he said that the political offenders and maltreatment of them will continue to exist as long as the law remains in force.

Number of victims to industrial accidents increases

Pyongyang, August 26 (KCNA) -- More than 24,500 people have suffered from disasters in the industrial sector in South Korea in the first half of the year, a Seoul-based radio reported.
Over 12,000 people, or upwards of 1,100 more than that in the same period of the last year, fell victim to disasters in the manufacturing field in particular.
The number of accidents is on a daily increase in workplaces of South Korea owing to the harsher exploitation by employers and lack of safety facilities, thus imposing disasters and misfortunes upon many workers.

Able young construction unit

Pyongyang, August 26 (KCNA) -- The young people in the DPRK are greeting the 8th Youth Day (August 28) with labour achievements.
They have performed spectacular feats in major construction projects and in the efforts to keep the production in various domains of the national economy going at a high level under the motto "for second grand Chollima march " among them are members of the speed campaign youth shock brigade.
They have distinguished themselves in the building of bridges on Pyongyang-Nampho Motorway and the institute of Aeguk acupuncture and moxibustion under the General Hospital of Koryo Medicine and in other projects.
General Secretary Kim Jong Il organized the speed campaign youth shock brigade in Juche 64 (1975) to put spurs to the movement of youth shock bridged in keeping with new requirements of the developing revolution.
And he assigned them one major construction task after another and led them to perform shining feats.
They completed the electrification of railways between Pyongyang and Madong as their first assignment. They have so far constructed more than 170 objects including 252 kilometre-long youth railways between Hyesan and Manpho, projects to switch railways over to electric traction and lay new railways, their total length reaching 2,500 km, and the construction of flats for 50,000 families in Pyongyang and the ore dressing plant no. 3 of the Komdok Mining Complex.
The young construction unit was awarded Kim Il Sung Order, the highest order in the DPRK.
And it produced more than 20 labour heroes, over 120 winners of Kim Il Sung Youth Honor Prize and some 40,000 recipients of state orders and medals.

Many edifices carry word "youth"

Pyongyang, August 26 (KCNA) -- Recently, a reservoir built in Koksan county, North Hwanghae Province, was named "Ryulri Youth Reservoir."
The DPRK let edifices built by the young people carry the word "youth," in order to hand down through generations the exploits performed by them in the construction of socialism.
The number of such edifices is more than 29,000 nationwide.
The President Kim Il Sung gave on-site guidance to a completed street in the eastern part of Pyongyang in June of Juche 47 (1958). He highly praised the role played by the youth in the construction of the street and personally named it "Youth Street".
Since then, more than 80 industrial establishments have been built across the country by the devoted efforts of the young people for building a strong and prosperous country and carry the word "youth".
Among them are February 8 Jikdong, Chonsong, Yonphung, Sochang and other coal mines of Phyongnam Youth Coal Field, Hochon Youth Mine, Kanggye Youth Power Station, Namhung Youth Chemical Complex, Rothan Youth Forestry Station, and Manpho-Hyesan and Haeju-Hasong railways and railway stations.
The young people also completed in a little more than five years the construction of the northern railways, the vast project in which over 10 million cubic metres of earth and one million cubic metres of concrete tamping were carried out in the rugged mountainous sections extending over 250 kilometers. After all, they built 76 tunnels, 116 bridges, 42 stations and 817 structures.
The word "youth" was also given to names of over 26,000 extra-large size machines and equipment including a 10,000-ton press, trains, vessels, trucks and tractors.
More than 350 youth workteams and sub-workteams have been active in rural communities across the country.
The youths have recorded a history of creation and feats in the victorious and glorious course of the Korean revolution and are now dynamically advancing in the van of the second grand Chollima march.

Press conference on issue of MDL at West Sea of Korea

Pyongyang, August 26 (KCNA) -- a press conference was called here today with attendance of home and foreign reporters as regards the issue of fixing the Military Demarcation Line at the west sea of Korea.
Senior colonel pak rim su, delegate of the Korean People's Army side to the general officer-level meeting at panmunjom, spoke at the conference.
The serious lesson from the west sea incident proves that future conflict is inevitable unless both sides reach a clear-out agreement on the Military Demarcation Line at the west sea and battleships of the sides are set apart from each other under such an agreement, he said.
He clarified which was more appropriate and reasonable from a legal and logical point of view of the two kinds of the Military Demarcation Line s at the west sea proposed by the kpa side and the U.S. forces side and where this issue should be handled, the main issues over which the two sides conflict with each other at the meeting.
He said that to fix the line the kpa side extended the provincial boundary line between hwanghae-do and kyonggi-do (a-b line) stipulated in paragraph 13b of the armistice agreement and applied the principle of equidistance according to the international maritime law.
He recalled that though paragraph 13b of the aa stipulates that all waters north and west of the provincial boundary line between hwanghae-do and kyonggi-do belong to the north, the U.S. forces side unilaterally fixed what it called "northern limit line" deep inside its waters defined under the aa.
As the right of military control over waters of the west sea and naval forces resides with the Korean People's Army side and the U.S. forces side according to the armistice agreement, a practical solution can be found to this issue and the security in the waters ensured only when it is handled by the two sides, he noted, and continued:
The U.S. forces attitude towards our proposal on working-level contact will show whether it is really interested in defusing the tensions at the west sea and preventing military clashes.
There is a limit to our efforts to seek a peaceful negotiated settlement of the issue.
The kpa side wishes to solve the issue of fixing Military Demarcation Line at the west sea through negotiations.
However, if the U.S. forces side persistently insists on the illegal and brigandish "northern limit line," doggedly refusing to discuss the issue, it will compel the DPRK to take a resolute measure to safeguard its sovereignty.
This measure of ours will be decided upon, depending upon what attitude the U.S. forces side will take at general officer-level meeting to be held at panmunjom in early september at the kpa side's proposal.
He answered questions put by journalists.
