Korean people's struggle for removal of concrete wall supported

    Pyongyang, January 4 (KCNA) -- Organizations and personages in different countries issued statements in support of an appeal sent by the DPRK government, political parties and organizations to their counterparts all over the world.
    Figures of 14 social organizations in Nepal including Manik Lal Shrestha, chairman of the Nepal-Korea Friendship Association, and the coordinator of the Kathmandu Coordinating Commission of the Peace Action Committee of Nepal, released a joint statement on Dec. 24 last year.
    They in the joint statement expressed resentment at the interference and domination of the imperialists that artificially divided the Korean nation who lived as a homogeneous nation in the one and same land for 5,000 years.
    Fully supporting the Korean people's struggle for the removal of the concrete wall, they urged the South Korean authorities to drop separatist anti-national stand to meet the Korean people's unanimous desire for national reunification.
    The Yemen-Korea Friendship Association in its statement dated Dec. 25 last year held that the South Korean authorities should promptly pull down the concrete wall in response to the demand of all the Korean people and the world's peace-loving people, allow free visits and contacts between the north and the south and ensure freedom of the South Korean democrats for pro-reunification activities.
    The statement also demanded that the United States lend an ear to the demand of the international community for the demolition of the concrete wall and refrain from instigating South Korea to confrontation with the north.


110 babies born on New Year's day

    Pyongyang, January 4 (KCNA) -- 110 babies were born at the Pyongyang Maternity Hospital on the first day of the meaningful year 2000.
    Of them, 16 babies (8 boys and 8 girls) were born from 00:00 to 01:00.
    Pak Yong Ran residing in Yomju county, North Phyongan Province, gave birth to her daughter at 00:04 that day.
    Among the births are twin brother and sister. Their mother is Tong Jin Ok in Dohung-dong, Moranbong district, Pyongyang.
    Doctors and nurses of the hospital and women now in the hospital described the birth of twins on the New Year's day as an "auspicious event in the year 2000 and sign of the country to be thriving."
    The birth of so many babies, the future of the country, on the first day of this year is the world's praiseworthy event in the new millennium.


New millennium postcard to Kim Jong Il produced

   Pyongyang, January 4 (KCNA) -- The Sol computer society of South Korea reportedly manufactured a computer postcard "a new millennium postcard addressed to the respected Kim Jong Il" on the occasion of the meaningful New Year 2000.
    Printed in the postcard are words highly praising Kim Jong Il as the sun of the 21st century and a picture of the ten objects which have been known from olden times as things making people enjoy longevity. This carries the best wishes of the South Korean people for his long life in good health.
    The postcard indicates that invariable are loyalty and filial piety of the South Korean people determined to entrust their all to the Marshal and hold in high esteem and follow him for ever though there is a limit to the lifetime of the ten things.


Turning out as one in this year's general advance

    Pyongyang, January 4 (KCNA) -- Papers here today call upon all the Korean people to turn out as one in the general advance this year under the slogan "Glorify this year, the WPK's 55th anniversary, with signal victory in the crucible of greatly increased activity of Chollima."
    Rodong Sinmun in an editorial terms the joint editorial of the newspapers of the party, army and youth which was carried on the occasion of the New Year as a militant banner the whole party, the entire army and all the people should put up.

Typhoon to be renamed

    Pyongyang, January 4 (KCNA) -- Typhoon is to be renamed from January 1, 2000 according to the decision of the 32nd meeting of the typhoon committee.
    It was decided at the meeting that the typhoon which has hitherto been called in American English should be given 10 names in each Asian country that made proposals, according to needs and desire of the Asian countries to deepen the mutual understanding and unity on the principle of independence and equality.
    The names of typhoon chosen in the DPRK are Kirogi, Toraji, Kalmaegi, Maemi, Meari, Sonamu, Podul, Pongsonhwa, Mindulle and Nalgae.
    Typhoon is to be given numbers with one year as a cycle.
    Typhoon will be called by turns every year by 140 names as proposed by 14 countries including the U.S., according to the English alphabetical order.
    For example, the third typhoon this year will be called Kirogi in Korean. If typhoon occurred for the 14th time this year, the third typhoon next year would be called Toraji.
    The new name of typhoon can be pronounced according to the proposed country's language or to the meaning of word of the language of the respective country.


Firm resolve of Korean people in New Year

   Pyongyang, January 4 (KCNA) -- The Korean people, braving stern trials of the 1990s, have greeted the hopeful year 2000.
    They are now in high spirit to accelerate the general advance for the building of a powerful nation.

    Pyongyang, January 4 (KCNA) -- At least a hundred thousand Pyongyangites held a rally at the Kim Il Sung square this afternoon to evince their determination to carry through the tasks set forth in the joint New Year editorial.
    The joint editorial of the newspapers Rodong Sinmun, Joson Inmingun and Chongnyon Jonwi issued on the occasion of the New Year Juche 89 (2000) called on the party, the army and the people to glorify this year, the WPK's 55th anniversary, with signal victory in the crucible of greatly increased activities of Chollima.
    A report was made by Kang Hyon Su, chief secretary of the Pyongyang city committee of the WPK, which was followed by speeches of people from all walks of life.
