Korean Children's Union
Pyongyang, June 6 (KCNA) -- Today marks the 54th anniversary of the Korean Children's Union (KCU).
The KCU, which was founded on June 6, Juche 35 (1946), is the only revolutionary children's organization in the DPRK.
The great leader President Kim Il Sung gave origin to the Korean children's movement.
The president formed the Saenal Children's Union, the first children's organization in Korea, during the anti-Japanese revolutionary struggle, thus establishing a shining tradition of the children's movement.
He set out the slogan "Let us always prepare ourselves to be the reserves of the communist construction " For the revolutionary children's organization to put up after the liberation of the country and indicated a clear way for the children's movement to follow at every stage and in each period of the revolution and led the movement with warm care.
Today the KCU is making rapid progress under the care of the great leader Kim Jong Il who perfectly personified the revolutionary idea of the president.
Noting that it is the core of the work of the KCU to bring up school children into reliable successors to the Juche revolutionary cause, remaining intensely loyal to the president, Kim Jong Il provided them with a new educational system whereby they can learn from the glorious boyhood of the president.
He put forward the slogan "Let us learn for Korea " and has led the KCU members to equip themselves with knowledge, a good moral character and good health, conduct socio-political activities and do a lot of good things through different mass movements.
The KCU members have performed great exploits on behalf of the country and people, the times and revolution throughout the annals of the Korean revolution.
The DPRK is proud of having such juvenile heroes as juvenile guerrilla So Kang Ryom and DPRK hero Ri Chang Do and such talented children loved by the people as "little doctor," "little artiste" and "little painter."
School children in the DPRK are leading the happiest life, keeping their wisdom and talents in full bloom, despite the difficult conditions of the country.

Aim of U.S. aggression on Korea disclosed
Pyongyang, June 6 (KCNA) -- The U.S. imperialists occupied South Korea in a bid to take hold of the Korean peninsula as their military bridgehead.
What the U.S. sought in invading the peninsula was clearly illustrated by the secret report no. 4849 worked out by the intelligence and research office of the U.S. Department of State on Jan. 28, 1949, which said: The geographical location of the Korean peninsula in northeast Asia is of value to any other state which is interested in the far east. Since the seizure of Korea by the U.S. will considerably increase the latter's position and there is no doubt that the former is of political importance for the latter.
Such aggressive aim of the U.S. was confirmed by the opinion the then President Truman gave to a report on "views, conclusion and recommendation in relation to the situation of Korea." He said most of the proposals related to the clear-cut action guidelines were included in the reexamined plan of the U.S. Korea policy. To carry out this task the U.S. will stay in Korea for an adequate period and he asked for the provision of personnel and adequate fund needed for it, he added. ("Memoirs of Truman" 2 and the 1967 edition of the Japanese "Kobunsha")
It was because of this aim that the U.S. had never regarded itself as "liberator" even when some of South Korean inhabitants in delusion welcomed its troops as such just after the liberation of the country from the Japanese imperialists' colonial rule.
Having set foot on Seoul, the U.S. troops announced order no. 21 of the U.S. military government office saying the head of office would exercise all the existing rights done by the Japanese governor-general in Korea, and thus made it clear that they were new masters in place of the Japanese imperialists.
Suppression of father Mun Kyu Hyon under fire
Pyongyang, June 6 (KCNA) -- The spokesman for the central committee of the Korean Catholics Association released a statement on June 5 condemning the "Seoul district court" of South Korea for charging father Mun Kyu Hyon of the (South) Korean Catholic priests' council for justice with violation of the "Security Law" on May 26.
The South Korean authorities filed a complaint and prosecuted in nearly two years under the "SL" father Mun Kyu Hyon, who visited Pyongyang with the government's official permission, and recently passed a sentence on him, the statement noted, and said:
This is an unpardonable mockery of the nation's aspiration and will for reunification and a vicious treachery against the trend of the times.
It is intended to put down the South Korean people's aspiration and will for reunification by linking the pro-reunification patriots with the north, spoil the atmosphere of the forthcoming historic inter-Korean Pyongyang meeting and summit talks and incite the north-south confrontation.
As the tragic fate of the preceding dictators showed, the anti-reunification traitors will be surely made to pay for their crimes and face self-destruction.
The South Korean authorities should behave themselves, squarely seeing the requirement of the times and the nation's will for reunification, and rescind the "SL", an anti-national, anti-reunification evil law, at once.
KCNA assails Japan's arms buildup
Pyongyang, June 6 (KCNA) -- Japan's air "Self-Defence Force" recently deployed for action four Awacs of new type "767". The deployment has considerably increased the air "SDF's" capability of controlling airspace over the waters surrounding Japan, especially waters off the Korean peninsula, foreign news reports said.
What cannot be overlooked is the fact that such deployment was made at a time when the adoption of "a declaration on renouncement of war" was under discussion at the Japanese house of representatives.
This clearly shows that Japan's declaration on "renouncement of war" is sham and how recklessly the Japanese reactionaries are stepping up the moves to turn Japan into a military giant behind the curtain of peace.
In this way Japan is inching closer to its conversion into a military power and rounding off the fascistization of society and wartime system.
As known, the Japanese reactionaries restored the right of belligerency and the right to participate in war by railroading legislations related to the "Japan-U.S. defence cooperation guidelines" last year. And they are speeding up militarization of Japanese society by persistently egging ultra nationalists such as Tokyo metropolitan governor Ishihara on to spread militarism.
All the facts prove that Japan's moves to turn itself into a military giant and realize its militarization have already gone beyond a danger line.
Asian nations will never tolerate such moves of Japan.
Tano festival
Pyongyang, June 6 (KCNA) -- June 6 this year (the fifth day of the fifth lunar month) is Tano festival in Korea.
From olden times ancestors celebrated the day to relieve fatigue from spring farming such as rice-transplantation and sowing.
According to historical records, Koreans spent the day, playing various folk games and having special food.
Typical of the games were Korean wrestling, archery, swinging and see-sawing.
Masque dance, puppet-show and tight-rope dancing were also popular in different local places.
Rice-and-mugwort cake was typical food served on the day.
The cake is made of rice powder mixed with soft leaves of mugwort, an annual plant sprouting in spring. It tastes sweet and is very good for health.
Salad and pancake made from cucumber, pumpkin and other spring vegetables were also specially prepared.
Each family prepares simple national dishes and shares them with their neighbours.
On this day Koreans like to have picnics in beauty spots, parks and recreation grounds.
Men like to play Korean wrestling, archery and Korean chess, while women prefer swinging, see-sawing and yut games. Men and women, young and old, sing and dance to the drumbeating. These are common scenes everywhere on the day.
Tano festival is one of the most popular folk holidays for the Koreans in a year.
Firm adherence to principle of national independence called for
Pyongyang, June 6 (KCNA) -- The great leader Kim Jong Il laid down the principle of national independence as a basic demand for the preservation of Juche character and national character of the revolution and construction.
Rodong Sinmun today says this in a signed article.
It goes on:
National independence means that one solves by oneself all the problems arising in hewing out the destiny of the country and nation in conformity with one's own demand and interests.
It is an inalienable right of each country and nation that cannot be violated by any one.
How to maintain the principle of national independence in the revolution and construction is a yardstick showing whether one takes the road of prosperity and independent development of the country and nation or follows the road of subordination and national ruin.
Historic experience and lesson teach that if one truly wants prosperity and independent development of the country and nation, one should more firmly stick to one's own viewpoint and carry out the lines and policies, one's own choice, to the last in face of the increasing pressure by the imperialists and dominationists.
Accordingly, the revolutionary party and people should not lose a firm confidence in the justness of their cause in face of severe difficulties and trials, but invariably advance along the road of independence, their own choice, with indomitable will and struggle.
What is important in holding fast to the principle of national independence is that one should always find a method and way of one's own style and rely on them in pushing ahead with and developing the revolution and construction.
The party and people that work to build socialism should apply their own style revolutionary and national in all aspects of the state and social life, including politics, the economy and culture.
One should push ahead with the revolution and construction one's own way with one's own viewpoint, guided by the principle of national independence. Only then can he achieve the independent development and prosperity of the country and nation, maintain the Juche character and national character and realise independence.
U.S. fiction of "threat" from DPRK refuted
Pyongyang, June 6 (KCNA) -- On May 30 the U.S. joint chiefs of staff raised a hue and cry over the "threat of ballistic missile and other means" allegedly from the DPRK in a document what it called "joint vision 2020" and called for further strengthening military collusion and nexus with Japan, etc, and increasing its nuclear forces and U.S. military presence overseas under that pretext.
In this regard Minju Joson today says in a signed commentary:
This is a clear indication that the U.S. is going to invariably pursue its wild ambition to dominate the world with strength in the new century, too.
The "threat" from the DPRK is a sheer fabrication dreamed up by the U.S. in a bid to "justify" its moves to establish military domination over the world, the commentary says, and continues:
The fiction of the "threat from North Korea" floated by the U.S. is the other side of its doctrine of aggression on the DPRK.
The U.S. regards the Korean peninsula as the most important target of its Asian strategy as it is a gateway to its invasion of the Asian continent.
But the U.S. design to stand unchallenged is being frustrated, as the DPRK does not allow the U.S. to invade the continent including the Korean peninsula.
Hence, the U.S., regarding the DPRK as a "cancer-like entity" lying in the way of realizing its strategy for world supremacy, has left no stone unturned to stifle it militarily.
If the U.S. turns to a war option to settle the Korean issue in the end, the DPRK will fight a life and death battle and inflict the bitterest-ever defeat upon them with crushing blows.
The U.S. is well advised not to misjudge this resolution.
