Japan's move for payment of "comfort money" condemned
Pyongyang, July 9 (KCNA) -- A spokesman for the DPRK Measure Committee for Demanding Compensation to "Comfort Women for the Army" and the Victims of the Pacific War issued a statement yesterday condemning the recent Japanese diet passage of the bills on paying a petty amount of "comfort money" to Koreans in Japan who are former soldiers and employees of the Japanese imperial army.
According to the bills, the Japanese government is going to pay "comfort money" to a few bereaved families of the war dead and wounded veterans permanently resident in Japan out of those who were taken as soldiers and employees of the Japanese imperial army from Korea during World War II, even that much less than the money paid to former Japanese soldiers and employees, the statement said, and continued:
This is another despicable charade betraying the crafty and shameless nature peculiar to Japan.
The statement bitterly denounced this as an unbearable insult to the victims and the Korean nation and a challenge to justice and human conscience.
Through this the Japanese government seeks to create impression that it is interested in the settlement of its past and calm down the growing public criticism, it said, and went on:
Dismissing the Japanese government's payment of "comfort money" as hypocritical, the committee demands as follows:
Firstly, the Japanese government should fully own its legal responsibility as an assailant for the issue of the Korean soldiers and employees of the Japanese imperial army and make a state apology.
Secondly, the compensation to the Korean soldiers and employees of the Japanese imperial army should involve all the Korean victims and bereaved families including the Koreans in Japan and compensation enough to convince them should be made for their mental and physical damage, distress caused by this and sufferings of their families.
And it strongly urges the Japanese government to honestly apologize and compensate for all the criminal acts committed against the Korean people such as forcible walking away of Korean women as "comfort women for the army" and other crimes.
