Implementation of north-south joint declaration called for
Pyongyang, January 9 (KCNA) -- Papers here today call upon all the Koreans in the north, south and abroad to work hard to implement the north-south joint declaration to the letter and thereby reunify the country independently and peacefully in the near future.
Rodong Sinmun in a signed article describes this declaration as a landmark of the reunification of the country in the 21st century as it clarifies the fundamental principle and way of realising it.

The three principles of national reunification are enshrined in the declaration.
The principle of independence is the starting point in the solution of the fundamental problem related to the destiny of the country and the nation and the movement for national reunification, and the principle of peaceful reunification is the basic way of solving the issue of reunification in conformity with the unanimous desire of all the compatriots and peace-loving people around the world.
The principle of the great national unity is an action program to firmly unite all the Koreans as one under the banner of national reunification.
The declaration also reflects the demands and interests of the Korean nation.
The declaration enables the north and south to confidently advance toward reunification with a common action program for national reunification as it indicates the way of achieving reunification by federal formula on the basis of the common points of the north-proposed low-level federation and the south-proposed confederation.
A more signal advance will be made in the movement for national reunification when all the Koreans implement the declaration to the letter.
Minju Joson in a signed article says that the great vitality of the declaration has been displayed since its publication.
The article calls for putting an end to the anti-national and anti-reunification acts contrary to the spirit of the declaration and frustrating all attempts harmful to its implementation.
Japan Defence Agency chief's projected U.S. junket under fire
Pyongyang, January 9 (KCNA) -- It was reported that director general of the Japan Defence Agency Saito would visit the United States in the latter half of January right after the emergence of a new administration there.
Saito would reportedly meet Rumsfeld, U.S. Secretary of Defense designate, to reaffirm "importance" of the "Japan-U.S. Security System".
In this regard Rodong Sinmun today in a signed commentary says:
The purpose of his tour of the united states is to beef up aggression forces with the backing of the United States and escalate the anti-DPRK hostile policy and moves to stifle it. The Japanese reactionaries have been keen on the moves for reinvasion under the absurd pretexts of the DPRK's "nuclear and missile threat" and "case of unidentified ship".
It is clear that they are going to intensify their adventurous military maneuvers for overseas invasion in the new century, too, under the pretext of "threat" from the DPRK.
They are getting more frantic in their moves to stifle the DPRK from the outset of the year, going against the trend of the times.
However, this is an anachronistic daydream.
Their intention to stifle the DPRK in collusion with others is as foolish an act as trying to sweep the sea with a broom.
Japan's overseas expansion will lead to destruction.
Socialist emulation called for
Pyongyang, January 9 (KCNA) -- Agricultural workers of the Sowon Cooperative Farm in Pyoksong county, South Hwanghae Province, held a rally and challenged the agricultural workers throughout the country to a socialist emulation to successfully carry out the tasks facing the agricultural field in the joint editorial of the first year of the 21st century.
It was noted at the rally that the agricultural field takes a very important share in augmenting the national economic potentials commensurate with the new era of the army-first revolution.

Reporters and speakers at the rallies said that the joint editorial for this year calling out the entire party, the whole army and all the people to the socialist advance under the red flag is the militant banner which the Korean people should hold high.
They stressed that the central task of economic construction for this year is to consolidate the existing economic infrastructure and display its potentials to the full, while conducting a forceful campaign for refashioning the national economy as a whole with up-to-date technology.

Korean working people turn out in economic construction
Pyongyang, January 9 (KCNA) -- Working people in the DPRK have turned out in the economic construction for this year.
An important task facing them is to speed up the general onward movement toward a socialist paradise and thus glorify this year, the first year of the 21st century, as a year of a new leap and overall revival.
Mass rallies were held in provinces, cities and counties and at industrial establishments to carry through the militant tasks laid down in the joint New Year editorial before starting their dynamic advance full of confidence.
A brisk campaign is going on in power, coal and metal industries and railway transport, key branches of socialist economic construction, in particular.
Workers at the Pyongyang Thermal-Power Complex, a leading power producer of the country, met to vow to carry out the tasks set forth in the joint New Year editorial and challenged working people across the country to a socialist emulation for overfulfilling the national economic plan for this year.
All the working people of the country have risen in response to this call.
Those at the Pukchang Thermal-Power Complex set it as a goal to operate more generators than last year and started the drive to refashion the production processes with up-to-date technology.
Workers at Sunchon, Kaechon and Anju area coal complexes and other coal industrial units are effecting innovations in production by giving precedence to tunnelling and making the best use of cutting faces though they are pressed hard for everything such as electricity, materials and equipment.

Agricultural workers have also turned out as one to get ready for this year's farming in the same spirit as displayed by people of Taehongdan. They are now producing a large quantity of compost to raise the fertility of farmland.

Kim Jong Il's army-first policy praised
Pyongyang, January 9 (KCNA) -- Paraskeva Markov, director and editor-in-chief of the Bulgarian paper Slovo, released an article captioned "21st century and dignity of Juche Korea."
He said in the article that it is the great fruition of leader Kim Jong Il's army-first policy that the Korean people defended the sovereignty of the country and national dignity by winning victory after victory in the fierce confrontation with the western forces, successfully launched an artificial satellite and activated the economy under the difficult situation.
Noting that Kim Jong Il's greatness and politics trained the Korean people and army to be men of strong faith and will and invincible ranks and turned the whole country into an impregnable fortress, he continued:

The world people were struck with admiration at the fact that after the Pyongyang summit arranged by the firm will and patriotic decision of Kim Jong Il for reunification the north-south joint declaration was adopted and is being implemented amid the great interest and support of humankind.

Booklet "Peerless Heroine" popular in S. Korea
Pyongyang, January 9 (KCNA) -- Members of the women's society active in Jonju in North Jolla Province of South Korea avidly read the booklet "Peerless Heroine" on the occasion of the 83rd birth anniversary of the great communist revolutionary fighter Kim Jong Suk, according to Seoul-based radio Voice of National Salvation.
Printed on the first page of the booklet is a portrait of Kim Jong Suk with an explanation "Mother Kim Jong Suk, peerless heroine produced by nation."
The booklet in its preface says that the life of Kim Jong Suk which was totally dedicated to the liberation of the country and people's happiness will always shine with history.
It introduces her revolutionary life under the titles "in bloody battlefields to save nation," "life devoted to building reunified country" and "prominent mother who caused great sun to rise."
Kim Jong Il praised as sun of 21st century
Pyongyang, January 9 (KCNA) -- Ri Chol Min, student of Yonsei University, made photographic copies of New Year's cards praising leader Kim Jong Il as the sun of the 21st century and sent them to his teachers and friends, thus deeply moving them, according to Seoul-based Voice of National Salvation.
Printed on the front side of the card are pictures symbolic of longevity with the glowing sun in its center.
The inside of the card reads:
A hopeful new century, the 21st century, has dawned.
The 21st century in which national dignity will be exalted will be a century of General Kim Jong Il, of national reunification and of national prosperity.
The reunification of the country and national prosperity are sure to come only when the nation holds Kim Jong Il in high esteem.
Let us all pray for longevity of Kim Jong Il, the sun of the 21st century, on the first New Year's day of the new century.
Imperialists' moves for globalization doomed to failure
Pyongyang, January 9 (KCNA) -- The struggle of the world people against "globalization" last year comes to the conclusion that "globalization" clamoured by the imperialists is doomed to failure and nothing can block the trend of the times toward independence, says Rodong Sinmun today in a signed article.
Last year, the imperialists' moves for "globalization" were strongly condemned by the world people as never before, the article says, and goes on:
The struggle against "globalization" was characterised by the expansion of the struggle to many countries.
The struggle was waged not only in almost all regions and countries including Asia, Africa and Latin America but also in western countries in 2000.
Developing countries not only brought to light the harmfulness of "globalization" but also found a right methodology for overcoming its aftermath and waged a vigorous struggle to put it into practice.
They had many bilateral and multilateral meetings and exchanged views to find ways of providing against "globalization".
The only way they found was to develop south-south cooperation with collective self-reliance and increase their own competitiveness.
Developing countries made great achievements in practising the strategy and way of overcoming the grave aftereffect of "globalization".
For example, "globalization" was denounced at meetings of different regional organizations and international meetings including the united nations general assembly last year, a joint market and a free trade zone of eastern and southern Africa were established, a bright prospect for setting up African union opened, central American countries decided to step up the conclusion of a free trade agreement and the issue of merging the South American Joint Market with the Andes Community was raised.
