Second National Program Contest in Education held
pyongyang, August 31 (KCNA) -- The 2nd National Program Contest in the field of education was held here from August 16 to 29.
The contest brought together over 500 students from universities, specialized schools and senior middle schools who proved successful in provincial, city and county program contests.
They competed in individual and special skill contests.
Scientific and technological calculation programs, data base programs, information on programming technique and other information necessary for raising programming level and increasing logical thinking power entered for competition.
DPRK girls carry off gold medals at Asian boxing championships
pyongyang, August 31 (KCNA) -- DPRK girls carried off 5 gold medals at the first Asian Women's Boxing Championships held in Bangkok from august 26 to 29.
The championships drew 85 girl boxers from 10 countries.
Pak Kyong Ok snatched a gold medal in the 45 kg category, Ri Jong Hyang in the 48 kg category and Kim Kum Son in the 51 kg category while Ha Son Bi in the 54kg category and Jo Pok Sun in the 60 kg category.
The cup for winner team of the championships was awarded to the DPRK boxers while Ha Son Bi received a cup for the best boxer.
Meanwhile, Hyon Un Mi bagged a bronze medal in the 57 kg category.
Korean and Lao youth league officials meet
Pyongyang, August 31 (KCNA) -- A meeting of officials of the central committee of the Kim Il Sung Socialist Youth League and members of the delegation of the Lao People's Revolutionary Youth Union was held at the central youth hall yesterday.
Present at the meeting were Kim Kyong Ho, secretary of the c.c., the Kim Il Sung Socialist Youth League, officials concerned, and members of the Lao Youth Union delegation headed by Bounpone Bouttanavong, first secretary of its central committee.
Speeches were made at the meeting.
The participants talked to each other about the activities, achievements and experience of the two youth organizations and saw an art performance, deepening friendship.
Friendly gathering to mark anniversary of Libyan revolution
Pyongyang, August 31 (KCNA) -- A friendly gathering was held at the DPRK-Libya friendship Aeguk Moran Garment Factory yesterday to mark the 32nd anniversary of the Great September First Revolution of Libya.
Invited to the gathering were Ahmed Amer al Muakkaf, secretary of the people's bureau of the Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya here, and members of the bureau.
Present were members of the DPRK-Libya Friendship Association and officials concerned.
They looked round the factory and conversed with each other, deepening friendly feelings.
Vietnamese ambassadress arranges film show and reception
pyongyang, August 31 (KCNA) -- Do Thi Hoa, Vietnamese ambassadress to the DPRK, yesterday sponsored a film show and a reception at the embassy on the occasion of the 56th anniversary of the Vietnamese national day.
Present on invitation were Ri Kwang Gun, minister of foreign trade, Pak Kyong Son, vice department director of the central committee of the Workers' Party of Korea, Kim Yong Il, vice-minister of foreign affairs, Choe Jong Hwan, vice-chairman of the Korean Committee for Cultural Relations with Foreign Countries and the DPRK-Vietnam Friendship Association, and other officials concerned.
The participants saw a Vietnamese documentary film.
At the reception after the film show speeches were made.
Song of national prosperity created
Pyongyang, August 31 (KCNA) -- The recently created song "Arirang for Great Prosperity" is popular among the people in the DPRK.
The song, which is of folk style in tone, was written by Yun Tu Gun and composed by An Jong Ho and performed by the Pochonbo Electronic Band.
This song well depicts the courageous Korean people, who are building a paradise and making everything with their own efforts despite manifold difficulties and adversity, and the might of singlehearted unity of Korea and its invincibility.
"Arirang" is known to the world as a typical Korean folksong.
In Korea there are scores of "Arirang" songs different in time of creation and content. They became a batch of folksongs while being popular among the people.
Those songs are diverse in theme and musical representation, but most of them are based on melancholy mood--sadness, wrath and complaint.
However, "Arirang for great prosperity" is totally different in tone from the past gloomy "Arirang" songs. It is an advanced folksong arousing very rosy, optimistic and forward-looking sentiment.
This song is easy for everyone to sing as it has popular, intensive and simple stanzas best suited to characteristics of folksong.
As an Arirang in the army-first era written by the army and composed by the people, it truthfully represents the real picture of the DPRK.
Greetings to Slovak President
Pyongyang, August 31 (KCNA) -- Kim Yong Nam, President of the Presidium of the DPRK Supreme People's Assembly, yesterday sent a message of greetings to Rudolf Schuster, President of Slovakia, on the occasion of its constitutional day.
The message extended sincere congratulations to the president, government and people of Slovakia on the day.
It expressed the belief that the friendly and cooperative relations between the two countries would continue to grow stronger and develop in the common interests.
Greetings to Uzbek President
Pyongyang, August 31 (KCNA) -- Kim Yong Nam, President of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly of the DPRK, on August 29 sent a message of greetings to Uzbek President Islam Karimov on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of its independence.
The message extended warm congratulations to the president, government and people of Uzbekistan on the occasion.
It expressed the belief that the friendly and cooperative relations between the two countries would continue to develop on good terms and wished the president great success in his work for the stability and prosperity of the country and the well-being of its people.
