Kim Jong Il inspects industrial establishments

    Pyongyang, June 18 (KCNA) - General Secretary Kim Jong Il provided field guidance to the newly built Taedonggang brewery and the toothbrush shop of the Pyongyang daily necessities factory yesterday. The first leg of his inspection was the Taedonggang brewery.
    All the production processes of the brewery ranging from brewing to fermentation, packing and forwarding are computerized.
    The brewery equipped with the latest facilities and having a big production capacity was completed in a matter of a little over one year.
    Kim Jong Il praised its builders for their feats, looking round the structures built on the highest level and the production processes based on the latest technology.
    Watching good quality beer coming out in an uninterrupted flow for a long while, he noted with great pleasure that it has now become possible to supply more fresh beer to people in all seasons. He set forth important tasks which would serve as a guideline in the management and operation of the brewery.
    Saying that what is essential is to keep beer tasty, he noted that in order to produce Korean variety of best quality beer with peculiar taste it is necessary to conduct tireless researches into it and actively introduce advanced technology into brewing.
    Underscoring the importance of sufficiently providing packing things and containers and taking thorough-going measures for carriage, while boosting the beer production in order to enable our people to drink beer regularly, he detailed ways to do so.
    The next leg of his inspection was the toothbrush shop of the Pyongyang daily necessities factory newly equipped with the latest facilities.
    Seeing varieties of quality toothbrushes produced to suit the characteristic features of people of diverse ages from children to the old, he was greatly pleased to learn that the issue of toothbrush for the people has found a perfect solution.
    Stressing the need to put the production of toothbrush and toothpaste on a normal footing as they are indispensable daily necessities, he took measures to do so.
    He was accompanied by Kim Il Chol, minister of the People's Armed Forces, Kim Kuk Thae and Kim Ki Nam, secretaries of the Central Committee of the WPK, and other senior officials.


Kim Jong Il inspects farm and nursery

    Pyongyang, June 18 (KCNA) - General Secretary Kim Jong Il gave field guidance to a farm and a nursery under KPA unit no. 534 yesterday. The first leg of his inspection was the farm operated by the unit.
    Upon reaching the field where wheat and barley were sown as the first crops, he was briefed by officials of the farm on the farming this year. then he acquainted himself in detail with the cultivation of two crops a year.
    Noting that the farm proved in practice the validity and vitality of the WPK's policy of cultivating two crops a year, he called on all the rural areas of the country to earnestly draw on the good experience of the farm and bring about a signal turn in grain production.
    He said that it is the most effective way of increasing the grain production under the actual conditions of the country where the area of cultivated land is limited to raise two crops a year in real earnest and set forth specific tasks and ways to do so.
    His next destination was the nursery newly set up by the unit.
    Praising the unit for doing really good things for the prosperity of the country, he said that this is a manifestation of noble patriotism that can be displayed only by KPA servicemen who consider even a tree or a blade of grass as their life and soul.
    Calling for planting more useful trees of good kinds on mountains and in fields to build at an early date people's paradise on this land liberated by President Kim Il Sung, he laid down tasks of changing the appearance of land to meet the needs of socialism.
    He was accompanied by minister of the People's Armed Forces Kim Il Chol, KPA generals Hyon Chol Hae and Pak Jae Gyong and secretaries of the Central Committee of the WPK Kim Kuk Thae and Kim Ki Nam.


"Arirang" termed smash hit

    Pyongyang, June 18 (KCNA) -- A mass gymnastic and artistic performance "Arirang" is evoking more lively response as the days go by. Kazuhumi Higashi, head of the delegation of the council of young men's association of Japan, said he has never imagined that the performance is such a smash hit, adding: everything before my eyes were so wonderful, to say nothing of perfect ensemble and ever-changing background scenes, that I was at a loss what to see first.
    Tatsushi Kawamata, head of the delegation of the Tong-A Bussan ltd., of Japan, said that seeing "Arirang" he came to know more clearly what is the source of the DPRK's capability to demonstrate its might despite grave natural disasters and western economic blockade.
    Kuniko Kudo, member of a delegation of the Japanese "society to love Korea's education and culture," said that stage setting and lighting decoration were so marvelous that she felt as if she was dreaming, adding: "Arirang" is a smash hit in terms of its theme and style.

Film show held

    Pyongyang, June 18 (KCNA) -- A film show was given here yesterday on the occasion of the National Day of Russia. Present on invitation were Andrei Karlov, Russian ambassador to the DPRK, and staff members of the Russian embassy.
    Also present at the show were Hong Son Ok, vice-chairperson of the Committee for Cultural Relations with Foreign Countries who is chairperson of the DPRK-Russia Friendship Association, officials concerned and working people in the city. The participants enjoyed a feature film.


GI crimes denounced in S. Korea

    Pyongyang, June 18 (KCNA) -- The south headquarters of Pomchonghakryon (National Alliance of Youth and Students for the Country's Reunification), the Kyonggi Provincial and Inchon District Federation of University Student Councils and the "reunification solidarity" reportedly issued statements denouncing the U.S. troops for driving an armored car over two school girls to death. Such crimes as this can never be stopped as long as the U.S. troops remain in South Korea, the statements said, noting that they would struggle until all the Yankees are driven out of South Korea.
    Meanwhile, Im Chan Gyong and Ri In Su, co-chairmen of the headquarters of the People's Movement for Withdrawal of the U.S. Troops, released a statement demanding the immediate and complete withdrawal of the U.S. troops from South Korea, which threaten the people's right to existence with all sorts of crimes and war games.


Celebrations of youth and students

    Pyongyang, June 18 (KCNA) -- A meeting of youth and students was held in Pyongyang on June 17 on the occasion of the 38th anniversary of leader Kim Jong Il's start of work at the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea. Kim Kyong Ho, first secretary of the central committee of the Kim Il Sung Socialist Youth League, made a report and speeches were made at the meeting.
    They said that his start of work at the WPK Central Committee on June 19, Juche 53 (1964) was a great event that opened a new history of the Juche era on this land.
    He has developed the WPK into a revolutionary party of Juche type and defended the country and the nation by decisively meeting the blatant challenge of the imperialists with his army-based revolutionary leadership and provided a springboard from which to build a powerful nation, they noted.
    Representing the unanimous loyalty of 8 million youth and children they extended highest glory and warmest congratulations to Kim Jong Il, who has performed immortal feats in the sacred struggle to accomplish the revolutionary cause of Juche and human cause of independence with his outstanding army-based leadership.
    They called upon all the young people to absolutely worship, firmly defend and thoroughly implement the idea of Kim Jong Il.

Korea's reunification supported

    Pyongyang, June 18 (KCNA) -- Figures of different countries recently released statements on the occasion of the 2nd anniversary of the June 15 North-South Joint Declaration. Nicolae Ion Cristian, General Secretary of the Working Party of Romania, in a statement said that it is a guarantee for ensuring peace and security on the Korean Peninsula to implement to the letter the joint declaration, a landmark for the independent and peaceful reunification of Korea.
    He said:
    The working party of Romania holds that the reunification of Korea should be realized on the basis of the three charters for national reunification.
    The U.S. troops, a stumbling block in the way of Korea's reunification, should withdraw from South Korea at once.
    The WPR expresses full support and firm solidarity with the Korean people in their struggle for the independent and peaceful reunification of the country.
    G. Debarajan, secretary of the central committee of the All-India Forward Bloc, in a statement said that the only way of independently settling the issue of Korea's reunification is to reject the foreign forces' interference and unconditionally implement the joint declaration.
    The U.S. should give up its hostile policy towards the DPRK and withdraw its troops and nuclear weapons from South Korea and thus create an atmosphere favorable to settling the issue of reunification by the efforts of the Korean people, he said.
    He reiterated his firm support and solidarity with the Korean people in their struggle to build a powerful nation and achieve the independent reunification of the country in the spirit of the joint declaration.


U.S. moves for nuclear war denounced

    Pyongyang, June 18 (KCNA) -- The anti-U.S., anti-war, anti-nuclear joint alliance grouping the South Korean Federation of University Student Councils, the south headquarters of the national alliance of youth and students for the country's reunification, the headquarters of the people's movement for the withdrawal of the U.S. forces, the Seoul district federation of university student councils and the solidarity for implementing the south-north joint declaration held a rally by the side of the U.S. military base in Ryongsan on June 14 to vow to smash the U.S. moves for a nuclear war, according to a news report. Speakers lashed at the U.S. moves for a nuclear war and called for preventing a war on the Korean Peninsula by the efforts of the nation.
    They condemned the u.s. for killing several millions of South Koreans and demanded an immediate withdrawal of the U.S. forces from South Korea.
    A resolution read out at the rally declared that they would carry on a stubborn struggle against the U.S. plot to start a nuclear war in a bid to exterminate the nation and thus realize all the fellow countrymen's aspiration after national independence and national reunification.
    At the end of the rally the participants conducted a propaganda campaign at the subway and other places, distributing literature critical of the U.S. moves for a nuclear war to citizens.
    On the same day an anti-U.S. and anti-war rally for independent reunification took place at Chonnam National University with people from all walks of life attending.


Korean martial art Taekwon-do

    Pyongyang, June 18 (KCNA) -- Taekwon-do is a martial art peculiar to Korea which has a long history and tradition. There are pictures in mural tombs dating back to the Koguryo dynasty (277 B.C. to 668 A.D.) which vividly depict two men standing face to face to practice the martial art.
    This proves that the martial art was widely disseminated during the Koguryo dynasty.
    It was called Subak (martial art of hitting with hands) at that time.
    This Subak game was frequently organized during the Koryo dynasty (918 to 1392). The winner was awarded prizes or chosen as a military officer or his military rank was promoted.
    It was also popular during the Ri dynasty (1392 to 1910).
    It developed to be "Thaekgyon" in the latter half of the Ri dynasty in which feet were also used.
    After the liberation of Korea in 1945, it developed into Taekwon-do, one of the major sports events.
    Taekwon-do is widely disseminated in many countries, going beyond the bounds of Korea.
    The International Taekwon-do Federation was organized in Juche 55 (1966).
    At present it groups at least 130 national associations and has over 50 million Taekwon-do players.


Koryo medicine popular on foreign markets

    Pyongyang, June 18 (KCNA) -- The Factory for Export of Koryo Medicine for Longevity is producing more than 40 varieties of Koryo medicines and health foodstuffs. Among them are Chongsimuhwanghwan, Angunguhwanghwan, Kangjongssarak, Yanggeron, Kaesong Koryo Wonhyongkkulsam, Kugijago, Kasiogalphi tea and Tolwoe tea.
    They are genuine herbal medicines manufactured according to descriptions written in the "Tonguibogam" (a handbook of Korean medicine), a famous medical encyclopedia of the middle age (mid-16th century-early 17th century).
    Demands for those medicines are on a steady increase at home and abroad.
    The factory located at the foot of Mt. Ponghwa on the bank of the River Pothong in Pyongyang is a mother factory manufacturing Koryo medicines.
    It was established in April, Juche 61 (1972) as a workteam processing crude drugs.
    All the production processes of the factory are updated.
    Hundreds of foreigners from nearly 80 countries have visited the factory to place orders for various Koryo medicines and health foodstuffs.


Kaesong Schoolchildren's Palace

    Pyongyang, June 18 (KCNA) -- The Kaesong Schoolchildren's Palace is located in Kaesong, the city near the Military Demarcation Line. The palace established in June Juche 50 (1961) has a total plottage of 50,000 sq meters.
    A statue of President Kim Il Sung with schoolchildren is standing before the palace.
    The palace has a four-storeyed main building and a three-storeyed gymnasium.
    The main building has over 100 study rooms, rooms for hobby groups and laboratories, a theatre with 750 seats and a library.
    There are more than 600 equipment and facilities presented by the president and leader Kim Jong Il. More than 3,000 schoolchildren visit the palace everyday to conduct extra-mural activities as members of over 60 groups to study general elementary knowledge.


Greetings to British Queen

    Pyongyang, June 18 (KCNA) -- President Kim Yong Nam of the Presidium of the DPRK Supreme People's Assembly sent a message of greetings to Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland on June 11 on the occasion of her birthday. Warmly congratulating her on her birthday, the message wished her good health and happiness.
    It expressed belief that the ties between the DPRK and the UK developing on good terms after the establishment of diplomatic relations would further expand in various fields.
