Kim Jong Il congratulates V. Putin
Pyongyang, October 6 (KCNA) -- Kim Jong Il, Chairman of the National Defence Commission of the DPRK, congratulated Russian President Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin on his 50th birthday.
He, in a congratulatory message sent on Oct. 6, extended sincere congratulations and warm greetings to Putin.
The message said:
I am pleased that the state power of your country is increasing and its international authority and say are steadily growing strong thanks to your correct leadership and the positive efforts of the Russian people.
The DPRK-Russia relations are favorably expanding and developing in conformity with the aspiration, desire and basic interests of the peoples of the two countries through a series of meetings and talks between us in recent years.
I am convinced that the traditional friendly ties between the DPRK and Russia will be more broadly deepened and developed in different fields in the spirit of the agreements reached at the meetings between us.

Rodong Sinmun on popular masses' independent thoughts
Pyongyang, October 6 (KCNA) -- Society advances and great victory is achieved in the revolution and construction thanks to the creative role of the popular masses equipped with independent thoughts, says Rodong Sinmun today in a signed article.
What is essential for raising the level of independent thoughts of the people is to let them have the spirit of solving their problem by themselves, the article notes, and continues:
Revolution and construction will advance at a fast speed and the tasks for building a new society can be carried out successfully only when the popular masses turn out in the struggle for the progress and prosperity of the country, highly aware of being its master.

Sojourn in north of delegation of CPCJ of South Korea
Pyongyang, October 6 (KCNA) -- The delegation of the South Korean Catholic Priests' Council for Justice toured various places including Mangyongdae.
They visited Mangyongdae. Being briefed on the fact that President Kim Il Sung was born in the historic home and nurtured his great patriotic aspiration, members of the delegation looked round with keen interest historic relics preserved with good care.
They had a picture taken before the old home in Mangyongdae.
They toured the secret camp on Mt. Paektu.
They visited the native home in the secret camp on Mt. Paektu where they looked round the historic relics telling what a great intention Kim Jong Il nurtured for the country and the nation.
They climbed Mt. Paektu, the sacred mountain of the Korean nation, and visited the Samjiyon grand monument.
Meanwhile, they toured the area of Mt. Myohyang.
At the International Friendship Exhibition they looked round many precious gifts Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il received from party and state leaders, prominent figures and progressive people of different countries.
They also visited the Pohyon Temple, ancient cultural relics in Mt. Myohyang.
They visited the Mangyongdae Schoolchildren's Palace and enjoyed a performance given by members of the art group of the palace.
End to U.S. military supremacy called for
Pyongyang, October 6 (KCNA) -- The participants in a national meeting of South Korean students reportedly issued a resolution on Wednesday which calls for putting an end to the U.S. military supremacy through the all-people struggle.
Noting that there is nothing to expect from the South Korean politicians who have not taken any step as regards the killing of the two girl students by GIs, the resolution said. We should turn out in a struggle, aware that we are responsible for the solution of the issue.
It called for relaunching the struggle demanding the complete withdrawal of the U.S. troops from South Korea and an official apology of Bush and frustrating the U.S. war moves with the national meeting of students as a prelude.
It demanded the transfer of the U.S. Forces' jurisdiction and the revision of the South Korea-U.S. "status of forces agreement."
Foundation Day of Korea observed in S. Korea
Pyongyang, October 6 (KCNA) -- A function was reportedly held in Seoul on Thursday to celebrate the Foundation Day of Korea.
Seen in the venue were a placard reading "we are the same fellow countrymen and the same nation" and flags bearing the names of the countries built by the Korean nation in its history.
Song Wol Ju, chairman for the function, said that the south-north joint function for the foundation day of Korea is taking place in front of King Tangun's mausoleum in Pyongyang for the first time since the country was divided into the south and north.
This is the fruition of the efforts to open the history of the nation for reconciliation and unity in the basic spirit of the July 4 joint statement and the south-north joint declaration, he added.
A message to the fellow countrymen was read out at the function.
It denounced the united states for seeking unchallenged hegemony in the international community and called for reviving the national identity.
There were a photo exhibition, a traditional game and an art performance.
Kim Jong Il lauded
Pyongyang, October 6 (KCNA) -- Kim Jong Il's election as General Secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) five years ago was a manifestation of all people's ardent worship and absolute trust in the peerlessly great man who has led the Korean revolution to continued victory for scores of years and was a natural result of the history of building the WPK which has inherited the tradition established in Mt. Paektu, said Pak Kwang Gi, chief of the Pyongyang mission of the National Democratic Front of South Korea (NDFSK), when interviewed by KCNA on Saturday on that occasion.
Kim Jong Il has led the WPK, army and people in the north to overcome the most rigorous trials in the history of the Korean revolution and achieve an epoch-making victory in building a powerful socialist nation, he noted, and went on:
The proud victory the north has won in defending socialism in the 20th century was a victory of his outstanding political ability and the dynamic leadership art of the WPK having him as its general secretary.
He ushered in a new era of independent national reunification by providing the June 15 joint declaration. This was an immortal exploit performed by him to be specially recorded in the national history.
This year alone, he has put the DPRK-Russia friendly relations on a higher level through his historic visit to the Far Eastern Region of Russia and arranged the DPRK-Japan summit meeting, the first of its kind in history, which resulted in the publication of the historic DPRK-Japan Pyongyang declaration.
It is the greatest fortune for the Korean nation and the highest honor for humankind that they are carving out a bright future of the 21st century, holding in high esteem Kim Jong Il, the bright sun of the 21st century who is leading the trend of the times under the banner of the army-based policy and independence.
The NDFSK will join the people from all walks of life in stepping up the grand march for implementing the historic June 15 joint declaration to achieve independent reunification, upholding Kim Jong Il as the great leader of the nation for reunification, and thereby bring earlier the dawn of reunified country without fail.
