Rally reviews 2002

     Pyongyang, January 9 (KCNA) -- A "rally reviewing 2002, the year of loud shouts of 'By Our Nation Itself'" was reportedly held in front of Seoul Railway Station on Dec. 31 last year under the co-sponsorship of the solidarity for implementing the south-north joint declaration, the headquarters of the people's movement for the withdrawal of the U.S. troops, the Seoul District Federation of University Student Councils and the south headquarters of the National Alliance of Youth and Students for the Country's Reunification. The rally was held, divided into two parts. The title of the first part was "we firmly uphold the June 15 joint declaration as a great banner of national reunification" and the second was "achieving national reunification 'by our nation itself' is an irresistible trend".
    Speakers at the rally said that last year the South Korean people from all walks of life fought against the U.S. hardline policy toward the north and its moves for a nuclear war on the Korean Peninsula, the struggle to punish GI killers of the two schoolgirls was turned into an all-people anti-U.S. struggle and all the fellow countrymen vigorously struggled to achieve great unity under the great slogan "By Our Nation Itself".
    Published at the rally was an "article to the people seeing out 2002, the year of loud shouts of 'By Our Nation Itself'".
    A literary and art presentation including the singing of one anti-U.S. song after another, signature campaign for the withdrawal of the U.S. troops who killed schoolgirls and the conclusion of a non-aggression treaty between the north and the united states and other propaganda activities took place at the rally.

Police suppression accused in S. Korea

     Pyongyang, January 9 (KCNA) -- The All-People Measure Committee for Sin Hyo Sun and Sim Mi Son, Schoolgirls Killed By a U.S. Armored Car reportedly sponsored a press conference at Kwanghwamun, Seoul on Jan. 2, denouncing police for its forced evacuation of the hunger strike place. The committee said that the police attempt to break the patriotic will of the people by force is an unpardonable violence to the nation under the situation that ever mounting is the will to make clear the murder case of the two schoolgirls and recover sovereignty through the struggle of all people, men and women, young and old.
    It stressed that the candle-lights should be kept even though the place of the sit-in was evacuated.
    A press release said that the forced evacuation of people from the sit-in place by the police is a signal of suppression, far from resolving the murder case.
    Meanwhile, the committee in a commentary on Jan. 5 said that police authorities are more undisguised in suppression after their crackdown on the candle-light rally and demonstration and their forced evacuation of the hunger strike place. It declared that it will struggle with the people until the grudge of Hyo Sun and Mi Son is paid off, Bush officially apologizes, GI murderers are punished at South Korean court and the SOFA is revised.

Russian Ambassador hosts friendly gathering

     Pyongyang, January 9 (KCNA) -- Russian Ambassador to the DPRK Andrei Karlov hosted a friendly gathering at the embassy on Wednesday evening on the occasion of the New Year, Juche 92 (2003). Present at the gathering on invitation were Minister Paek Nam Sun and Vice-Minister Kung Sok Ung of Foreign Affairs and officials concerned.
    Speeches were made there.

DPRK working people vow to speed up advance for New Year

     Pyongyang, January 9 (KCNA) -- Mass rallies were held in North Phyongan Province, North Hamgyong Province and Kaesong on Wednesday to push ahead with the general onward movement for the New Year. Chief secretaries of the provincial and city committees of the Workers' Party of Korea made reports at the rallies which were followed by speeches.
    The reporters and speakers noted that the Joint New Year Editorial called for glorifying this year as a year of bold offensive and great change when a general advance should be made toward the high peak of building a powerful nation under the banner of the army-based policy. The editorial is a banner of struggle encouraging the whole party and army and all the people to win fresh victory, they said.
    Saying that a bold offensive should be launched and great changes made to fully display the dignity and might of the motherland this year, the 55th anniversary of the DPRK, they said: officials, working people and youth and students should turn out as one to successfully carry out the militant tasks laid down in the joint editorial in the spirit of devotedly defending the motherland and the spirit of the "arduous march", which were displayed in the 1950s and the 1990s.
    A similar meeting of servicemen of the ministry of people's security was held here on Monday with Minister Paek Hak Rim, who is vice marshal of the Korean People's Army, and leading officials of the ministry attending.
    At the meeting Sim Won Il, director of the Political Department of the Ministry, made a report which was followed by speeches of generals and officers.
    The reporter and speakers said they would keep in mind the unshakable faith that the dignity and the future of the DPRK are guaranteed only when Kim Jong Il is devotedly safeguarded. And they would reliably fulfil their honorable duty to defend the leader and fully discharge their mission in cementing the singlehearted unity of the party, the army and the people based on the idea of giving top priority to the army, they stressed.

U.S. urged to drop hostile policy toward DPRK

     Pyongyang, January 9 (KCNA) -- The Central Committee of the Revolutionary Socialist Party of India released a statement on Dec. 29 last year urging the United States to immediately withdraw its aggression troops from South Korea, and drop its hostile policy towards the DPRK as demanded by all the Korean people. The statement said that the U.S. has fully revealed its true colors as a country going against humanitarianism and ethics by giving a verdict of not guilty to the GIs who killed South Korean schoolgirls.
    The world expresses strong indignation at the U.S. which has inflicted intolerable pain and misfortune upon the Korean people for over half a century while blocking Korea's reunification, it said, and went on:
    The U.S. escalates its nuclear blackmail against the DPRK and seeks to frustrate the inter-Korean cooperation and exchange.
    This is an encroachment upon the Korean people's sovereignty and an anti-reunification deed of barring the Korean nation from advancing toward reconciliation, cooperation and reunification.
    The statement called upon political parties and public organizations of different countries to extend full support to the just struggle of the Korean people.

KCNA calls for implementation of inter-Korean declaration

     Pyongyang, January 9 (KCNA) -- The June 15 North-South Joint Declaration will as always remain a banner our nation should hold high in the movement for national reunification and the stand and attitude toward the declaration is a touchstone that distinguishes between patriotism and treachery, said the joint editorial of newspapers Rodong Sinmun, Josoninmingun and Chongnyonjonwi released on the occasion of the New Year, 2003. The publication of the historic declaration in June 2000 marked an event of special significance as it opened a turning phase in the history of the movement for the reunification of the Korean nation.
    The declaration representing the unanimous desire of all the fellow countrymen in the north and the south and overseas and the urgent need of the times provided the Korean nation with correct guidelines for the movement for national reunification.
    Last year all the Koreans dynamically advanced under the uplifted banner of the joint declaration, witnessing dramatic events unprecedented in the history of national division.
    Multi-faceted talks and contacts including ministerial talks took place and the projects to reconnect rail and road links aimed to rejoin the severed ties of the nation made progress amid the concern of the public at home and abroad in the wake of Pyongyang visit of the south side's special envoy in April.
    Sportspersons of the north and the south jointly entered the venue of the 14th Pusan Asian Games under the Korean Peninsula flag and joint cheering gave further momentum to the nation's desire for reunification.
    This reality indicates that no matter how desperately the anti-reunification separatist forces at home and abroad may work they can never stem the strong national historic trend heading for reunification under the banner of the joint declaration.
    But the U.S. and other anti-reunification forces at home and abroad are keen to stifle the DPRK, refusing to face up to the positive developments observed at a new phase after the publication of the joint declaration.
    This is evidenced by the racket kicked up by separatist forces at home and abroad over the "nuclear issue" of the DPRK. Success or failure of the movement for national reunification hinges on how the nation will uphold and embody the idea of "By Our Nation Itself", the main spirit of the joint declaration.
    All the Koreans should consider the joint declaration as an invariable landmark for national reunification and bring about a radical turn in carrying out the cause of reunification by the efforts of the nation itself.

GIs' unceasing crimes under fire

     Pyongyang, January 9 (KCNA) -- A GI broke a windowpane of a shop in Chunchon city, Kangwon province at the dawn of the New Year's Day and two GIs damaged a car in a parking lot on Jan. 4. In this regard Rodong Sinmun Thursday in a signed commentary says that more crimes committed by the U.S. imperialist troops in South Korea from the outset of the New Year only go to prove that they are a group of ruthless hooligans and beasts in human skin steeped in misanthropy to the marrow of their bones.
    Recalling that GIs find everything in South Korea disgusting and for that reason they go on the rampage, killing people, breaking and damaging things, the commentary continues:
    The South Koreans angered by the U.S. arrogant and insolent attitude toward the merciless killing of the two schoolgirls by GIs last year held candle-light demonstrations one after another.
    However, the U.S. aggressor troops are still committing one crime after another, not paying heed to the protest.
    This means that they do not care whether South Koreans stand outside in cold weather calling for a stop to crimes or not.
    GIs are brutes on whom no law works.
    No one can predict who and how many more people would meet the same fate this year as young Hyo Sun and Mi Son did last year at the hands of those man-hunters.
    A mad dog should be drubbed.

Full display of strong anti-imperialist fighting spirit called for

     Pyongyang, January 9 (KCNA) -- The army-centered policy of the Workers' Party of Korea fully demonstrates its vitality in the revolutionary practice as it is based on a do-or-die anti-imperialist spirit, says Rodong Sinmun on Jan. 9 in a signed article. It goes on: Fully reflected in the army-based policy is the unshakable anti-imperialist spirit of fighting to the last at the risk of one's life against anyone who tries to encroach upon the sovereignty of Korea and the nation.
    Its sovereignty is guaranteed by armed forces.
    Arms serve as an invincible treasured sword that can be placed in the hands of only those with faith and will ready to fight against enemies to a finish.
    The revolutionary spirit of soldiers is now being fully displayed among the servicepersons and the whole society is learning from it as it helps step up the advance of the era of army-based policy. Underlying this spirit are the firm resolution and will of the army and the people of the DPRK to devotedly implement the army-centered policy of the party based on the staunch anti-imperialist fighting spirit.
    The army-based policy reflects the transparent spirit of class struggle, the spirit of allowing neither compromise nor concession in the confrontation with imperialists.
    The master key to emerging victorious in this confrontation lies in firmly adhering to the revolutionary principle.
    Our army remains strong regardless of whether enemies pursue an appeasement policy or a hardline one. It does not allow any slightest compromise or concession in the struggle against class enemies.
    The army-based policy is based on the firm revolutionary principle that the DPRK will never lay down arms of the revolution and class as long as imperialists remain on earth.
    Korean-style socialism is sure to triumph as long as the army-centred policy of the WPK remains in force.

Rodong Sinmun on army-centered policy

     Pyongyang, January 9 (KCNA) -- Those who are mindful of the destiny and future of the country and the nation should support and uphold the army-based policy, wherever they are, irrespective of ideology and system, religious belief and property status. Rodong Sinmun says this today in a signed article.
    The army-centred policy is a sure guarantee for preventing the danger of a war on the Korean Peninsula and achieving independent reunification of the nation, the article says, and continues:
    It is because the army-based policy is a patriotic policy for safeguarding the sovereignty and dignity of the nation.
    The army-based policy reflects the firm faith and will to allow no moves of the imperialists to impair the sovereignty of the country and the nation. But for the army-based policy the Korean people would not have defended more precious sovereignty than their lives and got rid of the slavery of the imperialists.
    As the policy serves as a banner of peace for ensuring the security of the country and the nation it is a firm guarantee for removing the danger of a war from the Korean Peninsula and achieving independent reunification.
    It is under this policy that the U.S. imperialists' moves to unleash a new war are checked and frustrated and peace on the Korean Peninsula and the security of the nation could be defended even in the tense situation.
    All the Koreans are convinced that the army-based policy is the most patriotic policy and the banner of peace that saves the nation and helps visualize the bright future of a reunified country.

Step-up in production

     Pyongyang, January 9 (KCNA) --Working people throughout the Democratic People's Republic of Korea are stepping up production in different sectors of the national economy, encouraged by the new year joint editorial published by the newspapers of the Workers' Party of Korea, the army and the youth. The Pyongyang Thermal Power Complex has overfulfilled its daily assignments from the first days of the New Year by fully exploring inner resources to solve the shortage of heavy oil and keeping the generators in full-capacity operation under difficult conditions.
    The Sunchon District Youth Coal Mining Complex has also carried out its daily quotas by arousing coal miners to attain the New Year's goal to create 66 coalfields, introduce a new coal mining method and put the computerization of coal production on a high level.
    From the beginning of the year, the Kim Chaek Iron and Steel Complex has increased the coke and sinter output 1.2 times the figure at the end of last year by keeping furnaces in good conditions and machines in full-capacity operation. The Songjin Steel Complex is topping its daily targets in molten iron and rolled steel production by considerably decreasing the standards of electricity consumption per ton of steel and increasing the frequency of teeming.
    Such achievements in production have also been reported from the Rakwon Machine Complex, the Sinyang and Puryong forestry stations under the North Hamgyong Provincial Forestry Complex, the June 4 rolling-stock works, the Sinuiju Comestics Factory and other industrial establishments.

Rare owl caught in Mt. Paektu

     Pyongyang, January 9 (KCNA) -- Builders of the revolutionary battle sites and historic sites in the Mt. Paektu area caught a rare owl on December 15 last year. According to experts, it is strix uralensis pallas belonging to strigidae.
    It, seven or eight years old, is 51 centimeters long and each wing is 30 centimeters long. The weight of the bird is 680 grams.

Greetings to IDPS chairwoman

     Pyongyang, January 9 (KCNA) -- The Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea today sent a message of greetings to Megawati Soekarnoputri, chairwoman of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle, on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of its foundation. The message said that the IDPS has made energetic efforts to achieve the territorial integrity of the country and national unity under the leadership of the chairwoman.
