Kim Jong Il inspects many land realignment projects
Pyongyang, February 9 (KCNA) - General Secretary Kim Jong Il has given field guidance to 27 land realignment projects in Kangwon Province, North Phyongan Province, South Hwanghae Province, South Phyongan Province and other socialist rural areas for the last five years.
He gave origin to the land realignment project, a gigantic nature-transforming project in the era of the army-based policy, while giving on-site guidance to Taebaek-ri, Changdo county on his way to a unit of the Korean People's Army on the forefront on May 4, Juche 87 (1998).
He gave highly important instructions on at least 100 occasions for successfully carrying out the project. He set out targets to be hit at each phase and its orientation that each province should undertake projects by a finish-one-by-one-method in conformity with its actual conditions and instructed that projects should be vigorously pushed ahead with in a movement involving the whole party and state.
In those days he examined at least 60 master plans and designs for the land realignment projects in different worksites.
He sent modern farm machines and materials to the farms that finished the projects to help them increase the agricultural production.
6,123 hectares of new land have so far been placed under cultivation.
In Kangwon Province, North Phyongan Province and South Hwanghae Province alone 1,515,108 patches of paddy and non-paddy fields have turned into 557,594 fields of standardized shapes to suit the soil conditions of plain, intermediary and mountainous areas and 91,629 km of ridges between rice-fields dwindled to 53,950 km as a result of land realignment.
U.S. hostile policy toward DPRK condemned
Pyongyang, February 9 (KCNA) -- The African Regional Committee for the Study of the Juche Idea in a statement on Jan. 24 said that the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula is a product of the U.S. hostile policy to justify its preemptive nuclear attack on the DPRK and realize its domination over Korea.
The U.S. nuclear threat is a grave threat to the peace and security on the Korean Peninsula and the rest of Asia and the world, it noted, adding:
The nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula is an issue to be settled between the DPRK and the U.S. through the conclusion of a non-aggression treaty.
Visiting group of non-governmental organization of S. Korea here
Pyongyang, February 9 (KCNA) -- A visiting group of South Korean non-governmental organization "Movement of Koreans for Helping Each Other" led by Song Hyon Sop, permanent representative of the organization, Kang Mun Gyu, chairman of the Central Council of the New Community Movement, and Song Sok U, representative director of the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation of South Korea, arrived here yesterday.
The group was met at the airport by Ho Hyok Phil, vice-chairman of the national reconciliation council, and others.
U.S. arms buildup assailed
Pyongyang, February 9 (KCNA) -- The U.S. Defense Department is now massively beefing up its aggression troops in South Korea and its vicinity as evidenced by its decision to dispatch there carrier Carl Vinson under the pretext that carrier Kitty Hawk now on standby in the waters off the Korean Peninsula may join a war against Iraq.
In this regard Minju Joson today in a signed commentary observes: All these facts clearly indicate how frantically the U.S. imperialists are escalating their adventurous moves for a war against the DPRK.
The U.S. imperialists are painting their arms buildup aimed to invade the DPRK as a sort of deterrence. But this is nothing but a broad hoax to mislead the public opinion, the news analyst says, and goes on:
This arms buildup eloquently proves that though they pretend to seek a peaceful solution to the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula, they are, in actuality, keen to stifle the DPRK by force.
Once the U.S. imperialists unleash a new war on the Korean Peninsula, it will soon develop into a nuclear war and both the north and the south of Korea will suffer from it.
They are becoming ever more undisguised in their intention to stifle the DPRK by force, while giving lip-service to "dialogue" and "diplomatic solution". And their scenario to invade the DPRK has entered the phase of full-fledged implementation. This reality eloquently proves that the DPRK was entirely just when it has increased the self-reliant defence capacity under the banner of the army-centered policy.
The U.S. imperialists are well advised to judge who is their opponent and halt their moves for a new war at once.
If they keep working hard to provoke a war against the DPRK despite its repeated warnings, they will be held entirely responsible for all the ensuing consequences.
U.S. military threat and pressure upon DPRK lambasted
Pyongyang, February 9 (KCNA) -- The United States has systemically escalated its arms buildup to recover from the disgrace and setbacks it suffered during the Korean War and swallow up the whole of Korea since the conclusion of the Korean Armistice Agreement.
In this regard Rodong Sinmun Sunday carries a signed article.
It says:
After the Vietnam war was over in the 1970s, the U.S. imperialists singled out the Korean Peninsula as an unstable area, declared they would not rule out a war and have since escalated their military threat and pressure upon the DPRK.
They had staged "Team Spirit" joint military exercises against the DPRK for 16 years since 1976, creating extremely tense situation on the Korean Peninsula.
As they were forced to stop the exercise by the internal and external pressure and changes in the international relations in the 1990s, they made sure that the contents of the former exercise were reflected in the "Ulji Focus Lens" joint military exercise and expanded the scale of the exercise in a bid to escalate the military confrontation and tension on the peninsula.
After working out the "operation plan 5027" aimed at invading the DPRK, they revised the war scenario as the adventurous "operation plan 5027-98" late in the 20th century in a bid to provoke the second Korean war.
Having stockpiled over 1,000 nuclear weapons in South Korea, they are openly calling for the use of nukes. They are desperately working to stifle the DPRK, peddling the fiction about the DPRK "development of nuclear weapons" and instigating the International Atomic Energy Agency to put international pressure on the DPRK.
The U.S. is taking measures to massively bolster its forces in and around South Korea in an undisguised bid to mount a preemptive attack on the DPRK.
It is quite natural for the DPRK to take the toughest measure to protect its supreme interests under this severe situation.
The U.S. imperialists should properly understand the stand of the DPRK and stop at once their reckless military threat and pressure.
Special envoy of Indonesian President feted
Pyongyang, February 9 (KCNA) -- The DPRK Government hosted a reception in honor of the special envoy of the Indonesian President at the Mansudae Assembly Hall on Saturday evening.
Foreign Minister Paek Nam Sun in a speech said that the special envoy's visit to the DPRK proves that the traditional friendly and cooperative ties between the two countries provided by President Kim Il Sung and President Sukarno continue to favorably develop.
He expressed belief that the Indonesian Government would register greater successes in the efforts to achieve the territorial integrity, unity of all the people and the country's economic recovery under the leadership of the president.
Nana Sutresna, special envoy of the Indonesian President, noted in a speech that it is important to strengthen the bilateral cooperation in achieving the peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region.
Indonesia has always supported the Korean people in their struggle to achieve the independent and peaceful reunification of their country, he added.
Expressing belief that the traditional relations of friendship and cooperation between the two countries would grow stronger in the future, he stressed that this would be unthinkable without the special concern of President Megawati Soekarnoputri and General Secretary Kim Jong Il.
NDFSK issues new slogans
Pyongyang, February 9 (KCNA) -- The Information Department of the Central Committee of the National Democratic Front of South Korea (NDFSK) released new militant slogans on February 5 denouncing the U.S. imperialists for their arms buildup to bring a holocaust of nuclear war to the Korean Peninsula, according to Seoul-based radio Voice of National Salvation.
The slogans underlined the need for the South Korean people from all walks of life to rise up against the U.S. nuclear war that will bring national ruin, and decisively foil its moves for arms buildup.
Noting that once a nuclear war breaks out on the Korean Peninsula both the south and the north will suffer from it, the slogans called for defending the destiny and peace of the nation through a life-and-death struggle against the U.S. and war.
Holding that the Korean Peninsula is not the U.S. theater of nuclear war, they demanded warmonger bush stop the war racket at once.
They called for driving the Yankees, responsible for the Korean division and the main source of a nuclear war, out of South Korea.
European trade unions support Korean people's cause
Pyongyang, February 8 (KCNA) -- A meeting of trade unions in the European region held in Athens on Jan. 23 and 24 adopted an appeal in support of the Korean people's just cause.
Referring to the fact that U.S. stopped the supply of heavy oil to the DPRK and is working hard to internationalize its "nuclear issue" in a bid to stifle it, the appeal dismissed this as the revelation of a sinister intention to invent a pretext for invading the DPRK and at the same time continue its imperialistic interference in the affairs of Korea.
Denouncing the U.S. moves to invade the DPRK, it called upon all the trade unions in the European region to stand against a war and a "new order."
The 23 trade unions in the region will stand on the side of the workers and other people of the DPRK and voice solidarity with them in the future, too, the appeal stressed.
Kim Jong Il's work published in Austria
Pyongyang, February 8 (KCNA) --Kim Jong Il's famous work "Abuses of Socialism are Intolerable" was brought out in booklet by the Joseph Gebauer Publishing House in Vienna, Austria on January 30.
The work was published on March 1, Juche 82 (1993). It brings to light the reactionary and hypocritical nature of the sophism made by imperialists and renegades of socialism that socialism is "totalitarian", "barracks-like" and "administrative and commanding."
It also clarifies the principled matters arising in defending and accomplishing the cause of socialism such as the issues of making socialism faith and morality and giving full play to advantages of socialism.
Kimjongilia Show held
Pyongyang, February 8 (KCNA) -- The Ministry of People's Security sponsored a Kimjongilia Show on Friday on the occasion of the auspicious February Holiday.
Put on display were more than 1,000 potted Kimjongilias in full bloom cultivated by people's security men and servicemen of the Korean people's security forces with deep reverence for Supreme Commander Kim Jong Il.

It will bring together famous figure skaters from different countries and Korean figure skaters. They will make exhibition presentations.
The arrangements for the success of the festival have been already wound up.
The ice rink, the venue of the festival, has been festively decorated and festival posters have been published.
Inter-Korean cooperation called for
Pyongyang, February 8 (KCNA) -- At the 9th north-south ministerial talks the north side proposed the issue of strengthening inter-Korean cooperation to avert the danger of a war and defend the peace of the country and the security of the nation in view of the tense situation prevailing on the Korean Peninsula and clarified its stand on it.
Rodong Sinmun today in a signed article says that inter-Korean cooperation provides the only way of ensuring peace in the country and defending the security of the nation.
It goes on:
The situation on the Korean Peninsula is inching close to the phase of serious crisis, arousing the world's apprehension, and the Korean nation stands at the crossroads of peace or war.
There is no guarantee that the U.S. warhawks, seized by extreme war fever, would not ignite a war of aggression against the DPRK. This war will not bring disasters to the north only.
It is, therefore, a task facing all Koreans in the north and the south to avert the danger of a war and protect peace on the Korean Peninsula.
If anyone turns his face away from the present reality and hesitates to opt for inter-Korean cooperation, taken in by the appeasement and deceptive trick on the part of outsiders and yielding to their pressure, this will be an act of treachery.
All the Koreans in the north and the south of Korea and abroad should be highly vigilant against the dangerous situation in Korea and the U.S. imperialists' reckless moves to launch a war of aggression and resolutely foil them through inter-Korean cooperation and a united struggle.
"Multilateral talks" rejected
Pyongyang, February 8 (KCNA) -- Senior statesmen of the United States flew to South Korea and countries around the Korean Peninsula and to different parts of the world to convince them of the usefulness of what they call "multilateral talks," claiming that the nuclear activities of the DPRK pose international menace, says Rodong Sinmun today in a commentary.
The news analyst says:
The U.S. loudmouthed "multilateral talks" are, in essence, a cynical ploy to shove off the responsibility for the settlement of the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula to the international community.
The U.S. is to blame for the nuclear crisis in the peninsula as it is menacing the sovereignty of the DPRK and its right to existence. So, it is responsible and able to do away with the crisis. The nuclear issue should be settled only between the DPRK and the U.S.
Other countries' joining in the negotiations between the DPRK and the U.S. would only complicate the issue.
The U.S. tries hard to use the "multilateral talks" in internationalizing the nuclear issue and lay the blame for the crisis on the DPRK in a bid to incriminate it on the charge of violation of international law. In case its demands are not met, it also seeks to drum up the support of the international community in its efforts to create conditions for its military attacks on the DPRK.
Any countries that are interested in the settlement of the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula are obliged to help the DPRK and the U.S., the parties directly concerned, seek a fair and negotiated settlement of the issue.
The U.S. should realize that there are no other options than direct and equal negotiations between the DPRK and the U.S. for the settlement of the nuclear issue and do what it should do.
Cuban Ambassador hosts reception
Pyongyang, February 8 (KCNA) -- Cuban Ambassador to the DPRK Esteban Lobaina Romero hosted a reception yesterday on the occasion of the birthday of Kim Jong Il (February 16).
He in a speech expressed his boundless reverence for Kim Jong Il who has devoted himself to socialism, global peace and justice, firmly maintaining his principle, and wisely led the struggle for the building of a powerful socialist nation and the independent and peaceful reunification of the country, as a heir to the cause of President Kim Il Sung.
He expressed belief that the Korean people would firmly defend socialism and achieve only victories under the leadership of Kim Jong Il.
He stressed that the Cuban and Korean people would firmly unite in the future, too, and strive for the accomplishment of the socialist cause on the basis of the fraternal friendly and cooperative relations between the two countries.
Jong Ha Chol, Secretary of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea, in a speech said that the birth of Kim Jong Il was a great fortune for the nation as the Korean people were blessed with the illustrious leader and general generation after generation for the first time in its history spanning 5,000 years and a historic event which promised a bright future of the revolutionary cause of Juche.
The Korean people highly praise the fraternal Cuban people for having vigorously advanced under the correct guidance of Fidel Castro Ruz, bravely foiling the anti-Cuba moves of the domestic and foreign enemies, he said, and sincerely wished them greater success in the future.
S. Koreans' reaction to proposal to correct English spelling of Korea
Pyongyang, February 8 (KCNA) -- The January 16th issue of the South Korean magazine Sisa Journal echoed the reaction of South Koreans from all walks of life to the joint symposium held in Pyongyang in December last year on the English spelling of the country.
At the symposium the north proposed to hold a joint seminar of scholars from the north and the south of Korea and abroad to discuss the issue of changing the English spelling of Korea into Corea, the magazine said, adding that this proposal is supported by South Korean people from all walks of life including experts and internet subscribers (citizens), in particular, who expressed their strong support to it.
It continued:
In response to this proposal, citizens created the "headquarters for the movement to correct the English spelling of the country" and "one million signature campaign to change Korea into Corea" and other cyber organizations. They posted on the internet the words that "Japanese imperialists changed the English spelling of our country in the past as part of its policy to force the Koreans to change their names into Japanese ones" and "No Korea to citizens." They spell Corea when giving names of homepage users. They also employ various other methods to conduct this movement.
The reunification solidarity and other reunification movement organizations, supporting this proposal, asserted that Corea should be used as the only correct English spelling of our country.
Some people even contend that the issue should not be taken as a simple issue of eradicating the leftover of the Japanese imperialists but as one of doing away with the U.S.-centred way of thinking.
