Pyongyang, May 5 (KCNA) -- Kim Yong Nam, President of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly of the DPRK, on May 2 sent a message of greetings to Olusegun Obasanjo upon his reelection as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
His reelection is an expression of the deep trust and expectation of the Nigerian government and people, the message said.
It expressed belief that the excellent relations of friendship and cooperation existing between the two countries would grow stronger and wished him greater success in his work.
Memorial service in S. Korea
Pyongyang, May 5 (KCNA) -- A memorial service for Kim Se Jin and Ri Jae Ho, martyrs of national liberation, took place at the plaza of Seoul National University on April 28, according to a news report.
Kim and Ri, postgraduate and student of Seoul National University, burnt themselves to death at the Sinrim crossroads of Seoul on April 28, 1986, chanting "no war, no nuke, Yankees, go home" in protest against the U.S. moves to make South Korea its nuclear base.
Ra Chang Sun, chairman of the south headquarters of the National Alliance for the Country's Reunification, in a memorial address said: Now that the U.S. imperialists' moves for war are being escalated, we should not forget the slogan for national reunification against the U.S. shouted by the martyrs but turn out in the struggle to achieve independence and peace.
A memorial poem was recited and a performance on the subject of "Yankees, listen" was given at the memorial service.
Then the participants held a meeting on the situation.
At the meeting speakers said that in this land workers have been reduced to wage slaves, peasants to debt slaves owing to the U.S. pressure on market opening and the failure in agricultural policy, the poor in towns to slaves of living and youth and students to war slaves. Which was caused by the U.S. escalating war moves and undisguised economic aggression, they said.
Anecdote about Kim Jong Il
Pyongyang, May 5 (KCNA) - General Secretary Kim Jong Il gave on-the-spot guidance to the newly built syringe factory on December 19, Juche 89 (2000).
After looking round its production processes, he said he would take some injectors produced there for test use.
A few days later, he met an official and told him that he had got injections with the syringes and some of them had pained him. And he said that the pain might be caused by needles, so efforts should be directed to improving the quality of needles for people and servicemen.
Bush administration's Korea policy accused
Pyongyang, May 5 (KCNA) -- The U.S. newspaper the New York Times on April 29 carried an article criticizing the Bush administration's Korea policy.
The article said that Bush's assertion about North Korea's threat to the U.S. is a sheer falsification of truth.
It was none other than Bush who listed North Korea as well as Iraq as part of an "axis of evil" without any clear ground and threatened North Korea by invading Iraq in violation of international law, it noted, adding it is nothing surprising that North Korea deemed it necessary to have nukes not to threaten the U.S. but to deter the U.S. threat of attack.
The world will be put in danger once again due to the cowboy's buffoonery of the Bush administration, it added.
U.S. urged to make switchover in its DPRK policy
Pyongyang, May 5 (KCNA) -- The DPRK will follow the U.S. attitude, Rodong Sinmun today says in a signed commentary urging the United States to make a bold switchover in its policy toward the DPRK.
It goes on:
No sooner had the DPRK-U.S. talks come to an end in Beijing than the U.S. ruling quarters vociferated about "cooperation" with Japan and South Korea. They went to the lengths of asserting that the matter of bringing the "nuclear issue" of North Korea up for discussion at the un security council again to make it adopt a statement critical of the DPRK is on an anvil.
These facts go to prove that the U.S. hostile policy toward the DPRK and its sinister intention to isolate and stifle the DPRK remain unchanged even after the DPRK-U.S. talks.
At the talks arranged with much effort the DPRK set forth a new bold proposal to clear up the bilateral concerns of the DPRK and the U.S., the parties concerned with the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula, prompted by the desire to prevent a war on the Korean Peninsula and achieve durable peace and security.
The U.S., however, repeated its old assertion that the DPRK should "scrap its nuclear program before dialogue" without advancing any new proposal at the talks.
The DPRK will mobilize all its potentials to bolster the war deterrent force in every way as long as the U.S. keeps pursuing its hostile policy toward the DPRK. If the U.S. does not positively respond to the DPRK's bold proposal, it will be held accountable for scuttling all efforts for dialogue and seriously straining the situation.
Anniversary of Kim Jong Il's work marked
Pyongyang, May 5 (KCNA) -- Rodong Sinmun today dedicates an article to the 12th anniversary of Kim Jong Il's famous work "Our Socialism Centred On the Masses Shall Not Perish".
The work clearly proves that Korean-style socialism centred on the masses is invincible as it is based on the Juche idea and the single-hearted unity of the leader, the party and the popular masses and provides the people with an independent and creative life.
Saying that the past 12 years since the publication of the work clearly testified to the validity of Kim Jong Il's ideas and theories, the article notes that his Songun policy serves as an ever-victorious treasured sword as it makes it possible for Korean-style socialism centred on the masses to fully demonstrate its advantages and might.
It continues:
The Songun policy helps further project the popular nature of our socialism and reliably guarantee the people's requirements for independence and interests and the sovereign right and dignity of the country and the nation and protect them from all forms of aggression on the part of imperialist reactionaries.
The Songun policy provides a sure guarantee for our socialism's advance in reliance upon the might of single-hearted unity and paves the way of building a socialist land of bliss for people.
This policy serves as a treasured sword also because it helped achieve the single-hearted unity of the party, the army and the people with the headquarters of the revolution as its core, the unbreakable harmonious whole.
It is thanks to this policy that the army and the people are closely linked by the true comradely relationship as they share life and death with each other in devotedly defending the headquarters of the revolution and all members of our society are so single-heartedly united that the army and the people have one and the same idea and fighting spirit.
The Songun policy not only helped increase the defence capacity of the country but bring about a great surge in all fields of socialist construction, the article concludes.
Valuable tradition of great national unity
Pyongyang, May 5 (KCNA) -- A new epochal phase has been opened in the efforts of the Korean people for the country's reunification.
Since the publication of the historic June 15 North-South Joint Declaration on reunifying the country independently with concerted efforts of the Korean nation, the distrust and misunderstanding between the north and the south have been gradually diminished and all the Koreans are turning out in the efforts to reunify the country.
The idea of great national unity acceptable to all Koreans was provided nearly 70 years ago.
President Kim Il Sung founded on May 5, Juche 25 (1936) the Fatherland Restoration Association (FRA), the first anti-Japanese national united front involving all the patriotic forces, for the purpose of liberating the country with concerted efforts of the nation.
No sooner had the FRA been founded than it enjoyed full support from the entire Korean nation and developed to be an anti-Japanese, patriotic force embracing people of all social strata including workers, peasants, youth, students, intellectuals, patriotic landlords and local capitalists. It also strengthened as a pan-national organization with its branches at home and abroad and thus made a great contribution to achieving the cause of national liberation.
The idea of the great unity of the whole nation advanced in the 10-point programme of the fatherland restoration association is reflected in the three principles of national reunification, the 10-point programme of the great unity of the whole nation for the reunification of the country and the proposal for founding the Democratic Federal Republic of Koryo. It has pushed ahead with the Korean people's cause of national reunification.
The precious tradition of great national unity still inspires all the Koreans in the north, south and abroad who value the interests of the nation and want the country's reunification to unite as one and turn out in the efforts for the reunification of the country, irrespective of the difference in ideology, political view and ism.
U.S. hit for pulling up DPRK over terrorism
Pyongyang, May 5 (KCNA) -- A spokesman for the Foreign Ministry of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea today gave the following answer to a question put by KCNA as regards the accusation made by the U.S. against the DPRK over terrorism:
The U.S. State Department in an "annual report on terrorism" released on April 30 attacked the DPRK again, asserting that North Korea did not take substantial steps to cooperate in efforts to combat terrorism and Pyongyang continued to sell ballistic missile technology to countries designated by the U.S. as state sponsors of terrorism.
This is a hackneyed trick used by the U.S. whenever it launched a smear campaign to isolate and stifle the DPRK. This only shows how preposterous the DPRK policy of the bush administration is.
It is universally known that the U.S. has employed a trite trick to militarily stifle those countries, which incur its displeasure, by listing them as "state sponsors of terrorism".
It is the intention of the U.S. to "Americanize" the world by unhesitatingly committing such state terrorism as unethical, anti-Islamic Iraqi war under the pretext of "anti-terrorism" in disregard of international law and the united nations.
But the U.S. is seriously mistaken if it thinks its practice will go down with the DPRK.
It is quite foolish of the U.S. to try to hurt the DPRK under the pretext of "terrorism" as it is the country where the leader, the party and the masses are single-heartedly united in thinking, purpose and the sense of moral obligation.
The U.S. smear campaign against the DPRK will only make the settlement of the nuclear issue between the DPRK and the U.S. more complicated and aggravate the situation.
Kim Jong Il sends message of condolence to Chinese party and state leaders
Pyongyang, May 4 (KCNA) - General Secretary Kim Jong Il Sunday sent a message of condolence to Hu Jin Tao, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and President of the People's Republic of China, and Jiang Zemin, Chairman of the Central Military Commission of the PRC.
The message said:
I express profound condolences to you and, through you, to the bereaved families on hearing the sad news that an accident of a submarine of the Chinese people's liberation army claimed lives of its crewmen.
The exploits performed by the fallen servicemen in the sacred cause of defending the country will be immortal
U.S. talk about "threat" from other countries rebuffed
Pyongyang, May 4 (KCNA) -- The United States is claiming that it is exposed to a great "threat" from other countries after the "September 11 incident".
Dismissing the U.S. talk about "threat" as a sheer lie, Rodong Sinmun says in a signed commentary today:
The U.S .is not exposed to a "threat" from other countries but the world is threatened by the U.S.
The U.S. forces other countries to disarm themselves by dint of the United Nations if necessary and ignores the UN when swallowing them up. The U.S. is going to apply such brigandish tactics to the DPRK.
It is kicking up an anti-DPRK nuclear racket, saying that North Korea's nuclear proliferation is troublesome and its nuclear development program is hurting international stability.
Some time ago, it brought the nuclear issue of the Korean Peninsula to the UN.
The "threat" ballad is a reversed slogan of aggression and war.
The U.S. has long been persistent in the moves for war under the pretext of the non-existent "threat of southward invasion" by the DPRK. The U.S. is now seeking to ignite a new war of aggression in the Korean Peninsula under such slogans as "anti-terrorism" and "nuclear and missile threat".
The reality calls for countering the U.S. talk about "threat" with high vigilance.
The Iraq war gives a lesson that a powerful physical deterrent force is necessary for us to cope with the anti-DPRK nuclear racket of the U.S. imperialists.
The Korean people will build up the self-defensive capability still further under the banner of the Songun policy.
Greetings to Polish Foreign Minister
Pyongyang, May 4 (KCNA) -- Foreign Minister of the DPRK Paek Nam Sun sent a message of greetings to his Polish counterpart Wlodzimierz Cimoszewicz on the occasion of the constitutional day, a national holiday of the Polish people.
In the message Paek wished the polish foreign minister success in his work for Poland's admission to the European Union and hoped that the traditional relations of friendship and cooperation between the two countries would further develop.
NDFSK vows more vigorous struggle for reunification
Pyongyang, May 4 (KCNA) -- The National Democratic Front of South Korea (NDFSK) will fight it out, together with working masses in this land, to drive out Yankee aggressors, establish national sovereignty and achieve the reunification of the country and genuine labor liberation.
The director of the worker-peasant department of the NDFSK central committee said this in a statement issued on Thursday to mark May Day, according to Seoul-based radio Voice of National Salvation.
The statement noted that the South Korean people have been mercilessly deprived of their national sovereignty and right to existence by the U.S. forces stationed in South Korea for over half a century.
Without the termination of the U.S. colonial rule and the establishment of national sovereignty, it is impossible to expect the provision of genuine rights, interests and right to existence of the working masses and the reunification of the country, it said.
It stressed that the working masses should wage a vigorous anti-U.S. struggle by the united efforts in different parts of South Korea and stand in the van of the mass struggle for the right to existence and the implementation of the June 15 joint declaration.
DPRK embassy opened in London
Pyongyang, May 4 (KCNA) -- A ceremony for opening the DPRK embassy in Britain was held in London on April 30.
Invited to the ceremony were director of Asia-Pacific Command Rosalind Marsden and other officials concerned of the British Foreign Ministry, members of parliament, representatives of political parties and organizations, businessmen, pro-Korean personages and diplomatic envoys of different countries.
A DPRK Foreign Ministry delegation led by vice-minister Choe Su Hon was present.
Rosalind Marsden noted in his speech that after the establishment of the diplomatic relations between the two countries in December 2000, mutual understanding and trust have been deepened through visits and contacts.
The opening of the DPRK embassy in London in the wake of the establishment of the British embassy in Pyongyang in July 2001 makes it possible to further develop the bilateral relations, he said.
The situation of the Korean Peninsula is now complicated, but the British government will strive to develop the bilateral relations in political, economic, cultural and other fields, he declared.
Following the ceremony, a congratulatory performance was given by Suzanna Clark, a British famous singer, who participated in the 21st April Spring Friendship Art Festival, and a reception was given.
Japanese reactionaries hit for visiting "Yasukuni Shrine"
Pyongyang, May 4 (KCNA) -- Dietmen and representatives from different political parties of Japan including former Prime Minister Hashimoto and secretary general Yamazaki of the Liberal Democratic Party, 182 in all, visited the "Yasukuni Shrine" to honour the memory of the fallen militarists.
Commenting on this, Rodong Sinmun Sunday says it shows what a challengeable and reckless phase the moves of the Japanese reactionaries for militarization have reached.
The news analyst goes on:
The departed spirit of militarism prevails and militarization is now being stepped up in Japan.
The Liberal Democratic Party of Japan set the visit to the "Yasukuni Shrine" as its "basic movement policy" and the Japanese government is concerned with the issue of building memorial facilities at the shrine.
Their visit is not to express individual mind.
The Japanese reactionaries are now taking advantage of the more complicated international situation and abnormal developments in different regions to embark on the road of overseas expansion at an early date.
They are scheming to implant militarist spirit into the mind of the people in a bid to lead them to realize their ambition for overseas expansion they had not attained in the past.
But the militarist moves will bring nothing but destruction and disgrace to Japan.
The Japanese reactionaries would be well advised to clearly see the trend of the 21st century and stop inciting militarist spirit.
S. Korean authorities hit for taking issue with anti-war peace education
Pyongyang, May 4 (KCNA) -- A spokesman for the central committee of the General Federation of Trade Unions of Korea in a statement on May 3 denounced the South Korean authorities for kicking up a racket while terming the anti-war peace education of Jongyojo (the National Teachers Union) anti-U.S. education.
He said:
The racket is an act against the nation and history which shows the pro-U.S. flunkeyist nature of the present ruling forces.
It is aimed to dampen the ever-mounting anti-U.S. spirit of the South Korean people.
Jongyojo is conducting anti-war peace education with a view to imparting to the rising generations the aggressive and brigandish nature of the U.S., the chieftain of national division and disturber of peace in the Korean Peninsula and the rest of the world. The education is very natural as it reflects the aspiration of the South Korean people for the dignity and independence of the nation and the requirements of the times.
Nevertheless, the South Korean authorities are undisguisedly attempting to suppress Jongyojo while calling into question its anti-war peace education under the pretext that it is contrary to "alliance with the U.S."
The South Korean authorities should see the trend of the times, drop the pro-U.S. flunkeyist attitude, take the road of independence and give up at once their attempt to crack down on Jongyojo.
