Press conference at Russian embassy

Pyongyang, May 13 (KCNA) -- A press conference was called at the Russian embassy in Pyongyang on May 12 on the occasion of the 58th anniversary of the victory of the soviet people in the Great Patriotic War. Present were media reporters in Pyongyang.
Members of the Russian embassy were on hand.
The press conference was addressed by Russian Ambassador Andrei Karlov.
The Soviet Army and people came out in defence of the country and displayed mass heroism to deal a merciless blow to the aggressors and achieve a great victory, he said, adding:
The Russian people observe historic May 9 as the day of victory when they defeated fascist Germany.
He answered the questions raised at the conference.

Book "Korea, Beacon of Times" published in Egypt

Pyongyang, May 13 (KCNA) -- Book "Korea, Beacon of Times" was brought out by the Egyptian Mideast Information Centre on the occasion of the Day of the Sun, the birth anniversary of President Kim Il Sung, and the 10th anniversary of Kim Jong Il's election as Chairman of the National Defence Commission of the DPRK. It was written by Yehia Zakaria Khairallah, secretary general of the Arabic Association For Arts, Culture and Information of Egypt. The book carries a photo of Kim Jong Il standing on the platform of Kim Il Sung Square.
It consists of four chapters titled "people blessed with happiness," "road of brilliant inheritance," "great prosperous socialist power" and so on.
The book introduces the happy life of the Korean people under the socialist system established by the president and the true features of the DPRK demonstrating its might as a sovereign and independent state.
Referring to the victorious advance of Korean-style socialism centred on the popular masses under Kim Jong Il's Songun revolutionary leadership, the vigorous drive to build a great prosperous power and the impotent anti-DPRK moves of the U.S. imperialists, it stressed that Kim Jong Il is a distinguished political and military activist at the present times.

S. Korean authorities' move to increase defence budget under fire

Pyongyang, May 13 (KCNA) -- The Society of People Working for Peace and Reunification, an anti-war and anti-peace organization, reportedly has staged a demo in front of the building of the South Korean Ministry of Defence since may 7 in denunciation of the South Korean authorities' move to increase the defence budget. The organization in a statement issued before the demo accused the Ministry of Contemplating an over 30 percent increase of the defence budget for next year over this year's.
The statement held that the authorities' plan to sharply increase the spending for arms buildup goes against the reconciliation and peace in the Korean Peninsula and Northeast Asia.
The ministry's decision to spend 340 billion won as expenses for the transfer of the u.s. military base in Ryongsan will never get the people's approval, it added.

Concerted efforts of Korean nation called for

Pyongyang, May 13 (KCNA) -- All Koreans are called upon to pool efforts under the banner of the five-point policy of great national unity. This leads to patriotism and a shortcut to independent reunification. Rodong Sinmun Monday said this in a signed article.
    It went on:
The five-point policy of great national unity put forward by Kim Jong Il comprehensively indicates principles of great national unity and their ideological basis and tasks and ways of achieving the great unity of the Korean nation.
All the fellow countrymen should unite close under the banner of the five-point policy of great national unity irrespective of idea, system, political view and religious belief and interests of classes and strata and turn out as one in the nationwide struggle to prevent a nuclear war and achieve peace and the independent reunification of the country.
The five-point policy clarifies that the great unity of the Korean nation should be achieved strictly on the principle of national independence.
The great unity of the Korean nation and the reunification of the country are all meant for protecting independence of the nation and country.
Without maintaining the principle of national independence the Korean nation can achieve neither true great unity nor national reunification.
The patriotic spirit and trait peculiar to the Korean nation serve as a strong ideological basis of great national unity. All Koreans should emerge from any differences and firmly unite under the banner of patriotism and the reunification of the country.

U.S. sinister aim sought in "Road Map to Mideast Peace" disclosed

Pyongyang, May 13 (KCNA) -- The United States pretends to be concerned for the Mideast peace but it is, in fact, craftily working to calm down the anti-U.S. sentiment mounting in the Arab countries in the wake of the Iraqi war and use Israel more effectively for realizing its ambition for domination over the Middle East. Rodong Sinmun yesterday said this in an article.
    It went on:
On May 1 U.S. Secretary of State Powell urged Israel and Palestine to stop violence so that the "road map to Mideast peace" proposed by Bush may not be "spoilt".
The aggression troops of Israel still continue barbarous military attacks on the Palestinian people.
Powell's remarks are little short of urging the Palestinians to remain mere onlookers to Israel's mass killings.
Lurking behind the "road map to Mideast peace" is another ulterior motive. The Iraqi war fought to topple Saddam Hussein's regime, gave further momentum to the anti-U.S. sentiment in the Arab countries. The "road map to Mideast peace" announced by the United States against this background is nothing but a political leverage to provide the U.S. and Israel with concessions after the war. In other words, it is intended to let the Arabs forget the Iraqi war committed by the U.S. against Islam.
If peace is to be achieved in the middle east the united states should stop its unilateral assistance to Israel and the Israeli aggression troops should pull out of the occupied land of Palestine, the article urged.

King Tongmyong, founder of Koguryo

Pyongyang, May 13 (KCNA) -- May 14 is the 2,300th birth anniversary of King Tongmyong (Ko Ju Mong), founder of Koguryo (277 b.c.-668 a.d.) A photo, relics and folk materials exhibition of Koguryo, a national scientific symposium on the Koguryo history and other functions have been held in Pyongyang to observe the birth anniversary of King Tongmyong (298 b.c.-259 b.c.).
Tongmyong founded a new feudal state after destroying the conservative forces and laid down foundations of powerful Koguryo by merging many minorities.
He, well known as a master archer from his childhood, grew up as a giant of wisdom and talent.
He became the boss of a region, keeping close ties with local autonomous forces, and then the ruler of Kuryo with five regions.
In 277 b.c. he renamed the country Koguryo and established a feudal ruling system and order.
For ten years following his ascending to the throne, he merged neighboring regions in the country.
The Koguryo people worshiped him and built his mausoleum well after his death.
When moving the capital of the country to Pyongyang in 427, they transferred his mausoleum to Ryongsan-ri, Ryokpho district and preserved it well.
But it was robbed and destroyed by foreign invaders.
king tongmyong's mausoleum was reconstructed on a large scale in Juche 82 (1993) under the guidance of President Kim Il Sung.

KCNA refutes U.S. talk about quid pro quo

Pyongyang, May 13 (KCNA) -- The U.S. has worked hard to mislead the public opinion over the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula before and after the DPRK-U.S. talks held in Beijing recently to settle the nuclear issue. The U.S. is keen to create the impression that the renunciation of its hostile policy toward the DPRK, a master key to settling the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula, is little short of "rewarding bad behavior."
The DPRK clarified more than once that the U.S. hostile policy toward the DPRK is a major stumbling block standing in the way of solving the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula and ensuring peace.
The U.S. deep-rooted hostile policy toward the DPRK is, in essence, aimed to destroy the DPRK by force.
The U.S. has threatened and blackmailed the DPRK by consistently pursuing the hostile policy toward the DPRK not only in the period of the cold war but after it came to an end.
The DPRK was, therefore, compelled to build up a deterrent force for self-defence to cope with it.
The U.S. is wholly accountable for the tense situation in East Asia, to say nothing of the Korean Peninsula, as it listed the DPRK as an "enemy" and threatened and pressurized Pyongyang, pursuant to its hostile policy toward the DPRK.
It is an open secret that in doing so, the U.S. seeks to strengthen the shackling military "tie-up" with Japan and South Korea and invent a pretext to maintain its clout with them through continued military presence and arms buildup there.
The U.S. hostile policy towards the DPRK has hamstrung the efforts to warm up the inter-Korean and the DPRK-Japan relations, to say nothing of the DPRK-U.S. relations, and escalated the tensions.
The U.S. renunciation of this policy, therefore, meets the common interests of not only the north and the south of Korea but its neighboring countries as it is essential for ensuring security on the Korean Peninsula.
Viewing these facts with reason one can understand that the U.S. drop of its anachronistic hostile policy toward the DPRK is not a "reward" to the DPRK but an action it should have taken long ago. The Bush administration must be aware that the former administration officially clarified its political will to fundamentally improve the hostile relations with the DPRK.
In the DPRK-U.S. joint statement issued on June 11, 1993, the U.S. agreed to refrain from posing a nuclear threat to the DPRK and interfering in its internal affairs and respect its sovereignty. The DPRK-U.S. Agreed Framework published on October 21, 1994, and the DPRK-U.S. joint communique issued on October 12, 2000, reconfirmed the basic spirit and principle of the DPRK-U.S. joint statement that called for terminating the hostile relations between the two countries.
The U.S., however, has insisted on its old assertion that the DPRK should scrap its nuclear program first, saying that Washington's drop of its hostile policy toward the DPRK would be a "reward". This only indicates that the U.S. has no political will to fairly settle the outstanding issues including the nuclear issue but seeks to fish in troubled waters by keeping the situation tense in defiance of the common interests of the countries in the region.
The U.S. is apt to threaten others, blustering that it keeps all options on the table. But the option is not a monopoly of the U.S.
The DPRK will closely follow the U.S. future stand, attitude and moves.

U.S. hit for posing nuclear threat to DPRK

Pyongyang, May 13 (KCNA) -- The United States is describing the DPRK's practical steps taken to solve the nuclear issue as "brinkmanship", "threat" and "blackmail". Minju Joson today in a signed commentary dismisses this as a ridiculous and shameless move to increase the atmosphere of pressuring the DPRK at any cost in a desperate bid to stifle it.
    The news analyst goes on:
The U.S. ceaseless nuclear threat to stifle the DPRK spawned the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula and created such grave situation that the DPRK's sovereignty is threatened.
The U.S. is not entitled to talk about someone's "nuclear threat" and "nuclear blackmail".
It is the world's biggest possessor of weapons of mass destruction and is threatening others with them. It is going ahead with the moves to reinforce its arsenal of those weapons.
This is aimed to realize its design for world supremacy by brandishing these weapons.
It is quite nonsensical for the U.S. to sling mud at the DPRK over its self-defensive step.
The shameless act of the U.S. can never be tolerated in the present world.
The U.S. is well advised to face up to the reality and sincerely opt for the settlement of the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula. If it continues misbehaving itself while groundlessly pulling up the DPRK before doing what it should do, the DPRK will be compelled to take a tougher countermeasure against it.
The U.S. should think twice over the nuclear issue of the Korean Peninsula.

U.S. wrong assertion rejected

Pyongyang, May 13 (KCNA) -- The United States still insists that "nuclear program should be scrapped before dialogue", while repeating a wrong assertion that it would be a "reward for bad behavior" to renounce its hostile policy towards the DPRK. It is nothing but a revelation of the black-hearted intention of the U.S. which does not want a peaceful solution to the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula, says Minju Joson today in a commentary.
The U.S. persistent hostile policy towards the DPRK is a main obstacle in the way of solving the outstanding issues, including the nuclear issue, and ensuring peace on the Korean Peninsula, the commentary points out, and goes on:
That policy, consistently pursued by the U.S. in the Cold War era and even after it, is, in essence, intended to stifle the DPRK by force. But it is anachronistic and will not do the U.S. good either.
The U.S. renunciation of such policy is essential for ensuring peace and security in the Korean Peninsula and will meet the common interests not only of the north and the south of the peninsula but of its neighboring countries.
It can never be a "reward" to the DPRK but will be an action that should have been taken long ago.
Whenever an opportunity presented itself, the U.S. has called for a peaceful solution to the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula. If it is its true intention, now is the time for the U.S. to show it in practice. The U.S. should immediately give up its hostile policy towards the DPRK and opt for solving the pending issues between the two countries, including the nuclear issue.

Hightened vigilance against U.S. strategy for world domination called for

Pyongyang, May 13 (KCNA) -- Rodong Sinmun today in a signed article calls for heightening vigilance against the U.S. invariably aggressive and dangerous moves to establish its control over the world with its strategy of aggression and war and policy of strength in the 21st century. It is the U.S. strategy for world domination in the 21st century to stamp out the anti-imperialist and independent forces with its policy of strength and war strategy and redraw the world map in its interests, the article says, and goes on:
Asia is the main target of its strategy for world domination.
The U.S. ambition to put under its control the Korean Peninsula, a core of its Asia domination strategy, remains unchanged not only in the last century but in the new century.
Nobody doubts that the U.S. has put Afghanistan and Iraq under its military occupation and is now seeking to designate the Korean Peninsula as its next target.
Pursuing a hostile policy to isolate and stifle the DPRK while terming it part of "an axis of evil" and a "rogue state" the Bush ruling group is talking about its "victory" in the Iraqi war and asserting that the DPRK should draw a lesson from the war,.
The U.S. is dreaming of a "victory" in the projected second Korean war. The U.S. moves to stifle the DPRK are reaching a dangerous point.
This is a clear proof of the U.S. plan to redraw the world map in the 21st century, its strategy to dominate the world.
The U.S. is mistaken if it thinks that it can defeat the DPRK and establish its domination over the Korean Peninsula. The DPRK is fully prepared to foil the U.S. imperialists' strategy for domination over Korea with strong deterrent force.

Halt to suppression of Hanchongryon demanded

Pyongyang, May 13 (KCNA) -- The Reunification Solidarity for the Implementation of the June 15 South-North Joint Declaration and Peace on the Korean Peninsula reportedly issued a statement on May 6, denouncing the security authorities for suppressing the South Korean Federation of University Student Councils (Hanchongryon). At a time when the north-south ministerial talks are being held amid the complicated situation of the Korean Peninsula, giving a bright future to the Korean people, the security authorities are intensifying crackdown on the members of Hanchongryon who have stood in the van of the reunification movement, the statement said, adding: this is an overall challenge to the desire of the nation for reunification.
Severely protesting against the arrest of deputies to Hanchongryon and sentence of penal servitude on them, the statement demanded the security authorities release all the detained students affiliated with Hanchongryon.
