African Regional Preparatory Committee Formed

Pyongyang, April 8 (KCNA) -- An African regional preparatory committee for a "meeting praising the great persons of Mt. Paektu" was inaugurated with due ceremony in Kampala on April 1 under the sponsorship of the African Regional Committee for Friendship and Solidarity with the Korean People in the run-up to the Day of the Sun. At the ceremony N.T. Mawema, chairman of the Zimbabwe-Korea Solidarity and Friendship Association, was elected chairman of the preparatory committee and Hessou Kohowi, chairman of the Benin-Korea Amicable Association "Long Live Comrade Kim Jong Il, Supreme Leader", and Marwan Sudah, chairman of the Arab Committee for Solidarity with the Korean People and Supporting the Reunification of Korea in Jordan, its vice-chairmen.
An appeal to organizations for friendship and solidarity with the Korean people in different parts of the world was adopted there.
It called on them to accelerate preparations for significantly holding the meeting in Mt. Paektu on the occasion of the 60th anniversaries of the Workers' Party of Korea and the liberation of Korea from the colonial rule of the Japanese imperialists and, at the same time, extend support and solidarity to the Korean people in their efforts to carry forward the cause of the great persons of Mt. Paektu and glorify the exploits performed by them.

S. Korean Political Camp Greatly Angered by Japan's Distortion of History

Pyongyang, April 8 (KCNA) -- The Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology held a meeting to screen textbooks at which it decided to describe Tok Islet as part of Japan's territory and publish history textbooks beautifying its past colonial rule, according to reports of the south Korean KBS and MBC. The textbooks did not mention at all the crimes related to the sexual slavery for the imperial Japanese army and the forcible conscription enforced by the Japanese imperialists, they added. What is more serious is that the ministry instructed the publishers of history textbooks to describe Tok Islet as part of the Japanese territory.
This has lashed different circles in south Korea into great fury.
A spokesman for the Uri Party of south Korea in a commentary charged that the "claim" to Tok Islet raised by Japan in its history textbooks is a move to call back the departed soul of the militarist ghost and its distortion of history in the textbooks is not only an issue between south Korea and Japan but a grave challenge to the peace of Asia. Meanwhile, a spokesman for the south Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade in a statement said that the "claim" to Tok Islet made by Japan in its history textbooks is little short of justifying its colonial plunder in the past and denying history of the Korean nation.
The government will take responsibility for the issue of Tok Islet and strongly react to it in the future, the statement noted, demanding the Japanese government fundamentally correct its distorted history.

National Cooperation against U.S. and Japan Called for

Pyongyang, April 8 (KCNA) -- The south Korean Federation of University Student Councils reportedly issued a statement titled "Let's Keep Nation Alive through National Cooperation against the U.S. and Japan" on Mar. 30. The diplomatic and military authorities of the U.S. and Japan at a recent "security consultative meeting" issued a "joint statement" in which they set a "strategic goal" of intensifying the military actions centering on the Asia-Pacific region, the statement noted, and said:
The U.S. laid it down as a policy to stifle the north by force of arms after designating it as part of an "axis of evil" and an "outpost of tyranny" and is contemplating using Japan as a shock force in implementing the policy. The U.S. and Japan are chiefly to blame for the moves to drive our nation into disasters of a war.
"South Korea-U.S. cooperation" is not practical diplomacy but diplomacy inviting national ruin.
In order to protect the life and dignity of the nation we should not cooperate with the U.S. but with our compatriots.
National cooperation alone is a practical way of checking Japan's moves to revive militarism and removing the threat of a war.

Anti-Government General Strike Staged in S. Korea

Pyongyang, April 8 (KCNA) -- At least 160,000 unionists under the south Korean Confederation of Trade Unions reportedly staged a general strike on April 1 to warn against the government's move to railroad a motion for the retrogressive revision of the labor law on part-time jobs through the National Assembly. At a press conference the organization declared that if the government and the National Assembly pass the motion at any cost, all the workers will turn out in an overall struggle.
After the press conference, 231 trade unions under the KCTU such as the Federation of Metal Industrial Workers Unions and the Women's Federation simultaneously staged strikes at their work sites.
On the same day rallies took place all at once in 22 areas including Seoul, Taejon, Kwangju, Taegu, Ulsan, Pusan and Jeju Island.
Participants in the rallies strongly demanded the government immediately abolish the evil law which makes all workers part-timers and drives them to destitution.

Hearing Held at UN Secretariat Building

Pyongyang, April 8 (KCNA) -- A hearing demanding the national right to education of Koreans in Japan and its settlement of crimes related to the sexual slavery for the imperial Japanese army was held at the building of the UN Secretariat in Geneva on April 1. It was cosponsored by the Human Rights Association of Koreans in Japan, the Federation of Young Korean Traders and Industrialists in Japan, the Union of Korean Students in Japan, the Group for Probing the Truth behind the Forcible Drafting of Koreans and the International Association of Democratic Lawyers. Present there were delegates of international organizations attending the meeting of the UN Commission on Human Rights and members of the south Korean human rights committee. Delegates from each organization of the General Association of Korean Residents in Japan (Chongryon) expressed indignation at Japan's deep-rooted policy of discrimination against national education and its obstructions, violence against Korean students and Japan's insincere attitude on redeeming its past wrongs.
Accusing the Japanese government of its unjust attitude to evade a legal responsibility for Japan's crimes far from making a sincere apology and compensation to victims of the sexual slavery for the imperial Japanese army, they called upon the international community to exercise its influence upon Japan to change its policy.
A delegate of an international organization drew attention to the fact that the issue of those crimes was seriously discussed and a resolution demanding compensation for them was adopted at the meeting of the commission, but it is still left unimplemented due to the wrong attitude of the Japanese government.
He urged all governmental and non-governmental organizations to demand the Japanese government admit its legal responsibility and make an apology and compensation for the crimes.
At the end of the hearing its participants watched a video tape titled "Bring My Youth Back" dealing with the crimes related to the sexual slavery for the imperial Japanese army.

New Society Free from Foreign Forces Called for

Pyongyang, April 8 (KCNA) -- The Solidarity of Youth and Students for Implementing the June 15 Joint Declaration in south Korea reportedly issued a statement on April 3, the 57th anniversary of the popular uprising on Jeju Island. It called on the youth and students to build a new society free from foreign forces without fail under the uplifted banner of three forms of cooperation--cooperation for national independence, cooperation for peace against war and cooperation for reunification and patriotism--aware that a way out for the nation is to drive the U.S. forces out of south Korea and achieve the reunification of the country.
    The statement went on:
Unless the U.S. troops are forced to quit south Korea, it is impossible to realize the desire for national reunification nor is it possible to give vent to the bitter grudge of the participants in the popular uprising on the island. There is neither justification nor pretext for the U.S. troops to stay in south Korea any longer in the era after the publication of the June 15 joint declaration.
Calling on the youth and students to intensify in different areas the struggle to force the U.S. troops to withdraw from south Korea and dismantle its military bases so as not to give them any room to stay, the statement noted that they would make this the year of driving the U.S. troops out of it and the year of achieving the independent reunification of the country.

U.S. Troops Warned against Complaining about Their Upkeep

Pyongyang, April 8 (KCNA) -- The Headquarters of the People's Movement for the Withdrawal of the U.S. Troops in south Korea reportedly released a commentary titled "We strongly warn the U.S. troops against complaining about their upkeep" on April 2. The chief of staff of the U.S. command in south Korea at an urgent press conference on April 1 complained about the share of the upkeep of the U.S. forces agreed upon between south Korea and the U.S., openly threatening to fire more than 1,000 south Korean employees in its units, the commentary notes, adding that this reminds one of a thief crying "Stop thief!"
The money spent in the name of "upkeep" of the U.S. troops every year reached about three trillion won together with indirect expenses, it said, stressing that the U.S. forces should stop complaining about their upkeep at once and get out of south Korea.

Cuban Diplomats Commemorate Day of Sun

Pyongyang, April 8 (KCNA) -- Ruben Perez Valdes, Cuban ambassador to the DPRK, hosted a reception at his embassy on Thursday evening to mark the Day of the Sun, the birth anniversary of President Kim Il Sung. Present there on invitation were Foreign Minister Paek Nam Sun, Minister of Foreign Trade Rim Kyong Man, Minister of Education Kim Yong Jin, acting Chairman of the Korean Committee for Cultural Relations with Foreign Countries Mun Jae Chol, Vice-Minister of the People's Armed Forces Kim Sang Ik, Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Choe Su Hon and officials concerned.
Staff members of the Cuban embassy were also on hand.
The Cuban ambassador said that President Kim Il Sung achieved the liberation of Korea, built a socialist country in Korea and performed great feats in the revolution and construction.
The President, who devoted his all to accomplishing the sacred cause for the prosperity of the country and the happiness of the people, always lives in the hearts of the Korean people and the progressive people of the world, he said, adding:
His revolutionary cause is being successfully carried forward by leader Kim Jong Il, general secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea and supreme commander of the Korean People's Army.
Paek Nam Sun in his speech recalled that the Cuban people have significantly commemorated the Day of the Sun every year together with the Korean people. This is a manifestation of deep respect of the Cuban leadership and people for the President.
The friendly and cooperative relations between the DPRK and Cuba provided by Kim Il Sung and Fidel Castro Ruz, he said, have been steadily consolidated and developed under the deep concern of the leaders of the two countries.
The DPRK will make all efforts to boost these relations, true to the behests of the President and the intention of Kim Jong Il, and extend full support and solidarity to the Cuban people in their cause of justice in the future, too.

U.S. Military Drills Denounced

Pyongyang, April 8 (KCNA) -- The Federation of Koreans in Australia released a statement on March 25 denouncing the U.S. for rendering the situation of the Korean Peninsula strained. The statement condemned all sorts of U.S. military drills contrary to the desire of the Korean nation for peace and reunification of the country as war provocation moves against the north of Korea. The U.S. is giving a lip-service to a peaceful solution to the nuclear issue and the six-party talks, which clearly shows once again that there is no change in the U.S. wild ambition for invasion of the north, the statement said, and stressed:
The U.S. should withdraw its hostile policy toward the north, stop the war exercises threatening the peace of the Korean Peninsula and come out to dialogue and negotiations with the stand of peaceful coexistence.

Chief of KPA General Staff on DPRK's Intention to Bolster Its Nuclear Deterrent

Pyongyang, April 8 (KCNA) -- The DPRK will bolster its self-defensive nuclear deterrent in face of the U.S. moves to stifle the DPRK. Chief of the General Staff of the Korean People's Army Kim Yong Chun, who is also member of the National Defence Commission of the DPRK, reclarified this position in a report made at a national meeting held at the April 25 House of Culture here Friday to mark the 12th anniversary of leader Kim Jong Il's election as chairman of the NDC.
    He said:
The U.S. has become evermore desperate in its efforts to stifle the DPRK and consequently a grave situation is prevailing in the Korean Peninsula.
The United States chiefly to blame for the present deadlock of the six-party talks is working hard to bring down the system in the DPRK, while frantically staging large-scale war exercises under various codenames meant for invading the DPRK.
The U.S. persistent hostile policy toward the DPRK will only prompt Pyongyang to further consolidate the single-minded unity of its revolutionary ranks and bolster its self-defensive nuclear deterrent under the banner of Songun. If the U.S. imperialists defy our repeated warnings and dare launch a war of aggression on the peninsula, the army and people of the DPRK under the great Songun commander will turn out as one in a just war and mercilessly wipe out the aggressors and win a final victory in the stand-off with the U.S.
He also underlined the need for the servicepersons and people to equip themselves with the Juche-based view on war and always keep themselves fully ready to go into action to resolutely frustrate the U.S. moves for a new war.

Prof. and Merited Artiste and conductor Lev Kontorovich sincerely wished the Korean people great successes in their efforts for the prosperity of the country.
