Kim Jong Il's Feats Lauded by Indonesian Figure
Pyongyang, June 5 (KCNA) -- Charles David, general chairman of the Indonesian Transport Workers Union, issued a statement on May 30 on the occasion of the 41st anniversary of leader Kim Jong Il's start of work at the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea.
He said in the statement that since Kim Jong Il's start of work at the WPK Central Committee he has performed distinguished feats unprecedented in history.
He went on:
The most distinguished of them is Kim Jong Il's establishment of the Songun political mode.
The Songun politics is the political mode which calls for building up the driving force of the revolution with the army as its backbone, considering the military affair as the most important state affair and energetically pushing forward the national defence and the overall socialist construction.
The history of Kim Jong Il's leadership over the last decades clearly proves that the politics based on Songun serves as an all-powerful treasured sword and a banner of victory.
Kim Jong Il will build the DPRK into a great prosperous powerful nation and reunify the country with the Songun politics.
Anniversary of North-South Joint Declaration Observed in Mexico and Britain
Pyongyang, June 5 (KCNA) -- A seminar on leader Kim Jong Il's famous work "Let Us Reunify the Country Independently and Peacefully through the Great Unity of the Entire Nation" was held in Mexico on May 27 on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the June 15 North-South Joint Declaration.
Ramon Jimenez Lopez, president of the Mexican Committee for the Study of Kimilsungism, and other speakers said that President Kim Il Sung set out the idea of the great unity of the entire nation with his noble patriotism, great magnanimity and charisma, providing an ideological and moral weapon for achieving Korea's reunification and performing undying feats in the cause of national reunification.
They underlined the fact that Kim Jong Il has wisely led the struggle of the Korean people for national reunification true to the behest of the President.
They expressed full support and solidarity with the Korean people in their energetic struggle to bring earlier the day of national reunification in the idea of "By our nation itself" under the uplifted banner of the June 15 joint declaration.
At the end of the seminar, the participants watched the Korean documentary "Concrete Wall Symbolic of National Division".
On the same day round-table talks and a film show were held in New Castle, Britain with an attendance of figures of political parties and social organizations.
At the round-table talks Carpinter, chairman of the north branch of the Revolutionary Communist Party of Britain (Marxist-Leninist) who is secretary general of the north branch of the British Friendship Society with Korea, referred to the greatness of Kim Jong Il.
Then the participants watched the Korean documentary "The Great Leader Successfully Steering the Building of a Great Prosperous Powerful Nation."
Renunciation of "Nationality" under Fire in S. Korea
Pyongyang, June 5 (KCNA) -- The number of those who renounce their "nationality" is on the rapid increase in south Korea, triggering off strong public censure, according to the south Korean MBC and KBS.
The "National Assembly" of south Korea passed the "bill on the revision of the law on nationality" on May 4 which stipulates that "one can have the right to renounce the nationality only after one's military service" in an effort to "do away with the evasion of military service".
This caused many young people to renounce their "nationality."
With the validity of the previous "nationality law" stipulating that one can be exempted from military service when one renounces one's "nationality" expiring on May 24, the number of the applicants for renouncing their nationality sharply swelled. There was only one case as of May 2 but it increased to 143 cases a week later.
Their number steadily went up to reach at least 1,287 throughout south Korea between May 6 and 23.
A scrutiny into those cases suggests that they are children of the privileged and rich circles.
For example, grandchildren of Kim Jong Phil, former president of the United Liberal Democrats of south Korea, former ministers of National Defence and former ministers of Foreign Affairs have already obtained the nationality of the U.S. and other countries.
The majority of those who renounced their "nationality" are youngsters at the age of 17 and below.
Sports Contest for Pochonbo Torch Cup Opens
Pyongyang, June 5 (KCNA) -- Annual sports contest for Pochonbo Torch Cup opened on the occasion of the anniversary of the victory in the historic Pochonbo battle commanded by President Kim Il Sung in the period of the anti-Japanese revolutionary struggle.
Mun Jae Dok, chairman of the Physical Culture and Sports Guidance Commission, made an opening speech at the opening ceremony held at the Basketball Gymnasium in Chongchun Street on June 4.
During the contest 11 sports events including gymnastics, rowing, archery, shooting, swimming and synchronized swimming will be competed in Pyongyang, Wonsan, Nampho, etc.
Among those attending the ceremony were Kim Jung Rin, secretary of the C.C., the Workers' Party of Korea, and officials concerned, sportsmen and sportswomen, school youth and children in the city.
U.S. "Resolution on Abduction" Rebuffed
Pyongyang, June 5 (KCNA) -- The chairman of the International Relations Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives some days ago submitted to
both Houses a "resolution on abduction by north Korea."
In this regard Minju Joson Sunday observes in a signed commentary: It is intolerable that the U.S. political circles introduced a "resolution on abduction" against the DPRK as it is aimed at branding it as "terrorist state" at any cost in a bid to justify and perpetuate its anachronistic hostile policy toward the DPRK and thus isolate and stifle it.
The United States is cursed and censured in the international arena for being the wickedest and most barbarous human rights abuser in the world. The U.S. vociferation about the "abduction issue" of someone only sparks off public criticism.
There is no "abduction issue" touted by the U.S. It was none other than the Japanese reactionaries that invented and peddled the "adduction issue" while zealously backing the U.S. in its moves to isolate and stifle the DPRK.
The smear campaign the U.S. has renewed against the DPRK over its "abduction issue", a ridiculous fiction, brought to light its invariable black-hearted intention to isolate and suffocate the DPRK.
All this indicates that the U.S. claim that it is not hostile toward the DPRK is no more than a red herring.
The obstacle lying in the way of solving the nuclear issue cannot be removed nor can the stand-off between the DPRK and the U.S. ever be defused as long as the U.S. clings only to its anachronistic hostile policy toward the DPRK as now.
If the U.S. truly wants a peaceful settlement of the nuclear issue and improved relations with the DPRK, it should not stick to its hostile policy toward the DPRK, a leftover of the old era, any longer.
Efforts to Keep City Environment Clean
Pyongyang, June 5 (KCNA) -- A campaign has been launched to keep the city environment clean in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea on the occasion of the World Environment Day which falls on June 5.
An Pyong So, vice-chairman of the Central Committee of the DPRK Natural Conservation Union, had an interview with KCNA on the occasion.
Referring to the "Green Cities; Plan for the Planet," the theme for this year advanced by the UN Environment Programme, he said:
A nation-wide campaign has been vigorously conducted to thoroughly prevent the city environment from being polluted, improve the living climate of the working people and provide them with all conditions for cultural rest.
Many species of trees, turfs, flowers and vines have been extensively planted in cities according to the city afforestation and greenery plans worked out to suit their sizes and topographical features. As a result, the number of trees per unit acreage of cities has increased.
Measures have been taken to arrange and manage large and small parks and recreation grounds, set up environment observation posts in different parts of the country to regularly study the quality of the city environment.
Along with this, activities such as prohibition of operation of harmful gas and dust-producing industrial establishments, suspension of rolling stocks operation exhausting much gas, disposal of garbage and purification of sewage water are being extensively undertaken to prevent the city environment from pollution.
The importance of the city environment and ways to protect and improve it are being brought home to broad sections of the people.
Particularly, the mass media of the country give a wide publicity to general knowledge and data to reduce the damage by frequent sandy dust phenomenon.
The DPRK government has set April and October of every year as the month and the first Sunday of every month for the city beautification to arouse all the working people to action for keeping their working sites and residential quarters clean.
British Embassy Officials Help Korean Farmers in Farming
Pyongyang, June 4 (KCNA) -- British Ambassador to the DPRK David Arthur Slinn and embassy officials helped farmers of the Paeksong Co-op Farm in Phyongsong, South Phyongan Province, in farming on June 3.
The guests were plucking and transplanting rice seedlings to help farmers busy with farming.
During break the guests joined farmers in singing and talked with them.
The British ambassador said that he saw with his own eyes the vigorous efforts of the Korean people to assist the countryside and increase agricultural production.
U.S. Dangerous Arms Build-up under Fire
Pyongyang, June 4 (KCNA) -- The U.S. is vociferating about its plan to start a war without warning after announcing its series of plans for a preemptive nuclear attack upon the DPRK. The U.S. deployment of Stealth fighter bombers in south Korea against this backdrop suggests that the outbreak of a war against the DPRK is just a matter of time.
Minju Joson Saturday says this in a signed commentary denouncing the U.S. introduction of 15 "F-117" Stealth fighter bombers and 250 maintenance personnel into south Korea.
Recalling that the U.S. has already worked out plans for preemptive nuclear attacks upon the DPRK including "CONPLAN 8022-02" and "OPLAN 5029-05" and blustered that the Korean war to be launched would be very fierce and destructive and it would break out without any warning, the commentary goes on:
The U.S. deployment of those type bombers in south Korea on the threshold of the 5th anniversary of the June 15 joint declaration is a deliberate criminal move to scuttle the grand festival for reunification and bedevil the inter-Korean relations.
These criminal moves of the U.S. have created a situation making it hard to hold June 15 functions for reunification as a significant grand festival for reunification common to the nation.
The U.S. should withdraw its military hardware including the Stealth fighter bombers and its forces from south Korea.
The south Korean military authorities would be well advised to behave themselves, bearing in mind that they will never escape from a severe punishment of the Korean nation if they conspire with the U.S. in its moves to provoke a war against the north.
Nearly 250 kinds of Animals Found in Lake Chon on Mt. Paektu
Pyongyang, June 4 (KCNA) -- More animals are being found in Lake Chon on Mt. Paektu.
The Combined Expeditionary Group for the Study of Lake Chon on Mt. Paektu recently netted a rare terrapin belonging to the tortoise family in five meter-deep water around the small basin at the foot of Chongsok Peak while studying living things under water of Lake Chon.
The terrapin weighs 1.7kg and has 21cm long shell of peculiar beautiful color.
Its appearance in Lake Chon on Mt. Paektu, the coldest part of Korea, is drawing the great attention of biologists because terrapins are usually found in the area south of the central part of Korea and the southern regions of China and Japan.
According to the survey and confirmation made by the expeditionary group up to now, there are nearly 250 species of stationary or seasonal animals including birds and insects in the lake and on its shores.
As the lake appeared as result of a volcano eruption, it was believed to be unfit for animal habitation.
But the fact that the expeditionary group succeeded in breeding a shoal of chars in the lake in the 1980s proved that the ecological environment of the lake provides a good habitat for fauna.
The group has since deepened the ecological study of the lake, finding more animals.
A Rana temporaria was caught in a pool on the shore of the lake near the small basin at the foot of Paekam Peak in June, Juche 80 (1991). This confirmed the habitation of amphibian animals in the lake.
From late in the 1980s when a shoal of chars began increasing in number, gulls could be seen flying in the sky above the lake.
Members of the expeditionary group saw a bear moving around the lake several times. Later on September 18 last year they witnessed a brown bear swimming in the lake towards the shore at the foot of Paekam Peak, after crossing the ridge between Hyangdo Peak and Ssangmujigae Peak.
Ceaseless finding of a variety of animals shows that living things in Lake Chon on Mt. Paektu are becoming more diverse.
Thanks to diverse living things in the lake, Mt. Paektu, a holy mountain of the revolution, is demonstrating its unique spectacular scenic beauty of Juche Korea, heightening the national pride of the Koreans.
KCNA Blames U.S. for Spawning Nuclear Issue
Pyongyang, June 4 (KCNA) -- The NPT Review Conference in New York came to an end a few days ago.
Delegates of the conference were increasingly assertive that the nuclear disarmament in the nuclear weapons states should take place before anything else for a proper solution to the issue of non-proliferation of nuclear weapons.
They were particularly critical of the U.S. which has failed to honor its commitment under the treaty.
The U.S. is chiefly to blame for having put the treaty into the present deplorable situation. It has developed smaller nukes, withheld the implementation of its commitment to guarantee security and laid down the doctrine of preemptive nuclear attack in breach of the NPT, while deliberately falling short of fulfilling its commitment as nuclear weapons state to cut down nuclear weapons.
The U.S. has been badly disgraced under a barrage of criticism and censure.
As proven by the whole course of the conference, the U.S. has been blamed as an author of nuclear issues currently under dispute worldwide.
The U.S. should take the lead in the implementation of the NPT as it is the world's biggest nuclear developer and possessor.
However, it has put spurs to the spread of nuclear weapons, far from honoring the treaty.
It has thus far denied to ratify the CTBT and stepped up the development and production of new type nukes.
Its nuclear policy has spawned more nuclear issues and crises as it has applied double standards as regards the nuclear issue and threatened the anti-American states that it would preempt nuclear attacks on them.
Such being a hard fact, the U.S. at the conference worked hard to justify its nuclear policy and pointed accusing fingers at other countries.
A particular mention should be made of the fact that it busied itself to build up public opinion critical of the DPRK's "nuclear ambition."
These are just part of the examples of the arrogant attitude and brazen-faced actions taken by the U.S. as regards nuclear issues.
The recent conference clearly indicated what is a stumbling block lying in the way of solving the nuclear issue between the DPRK and the U.S.
Since the very day the issue surfaced the DPRK has demanded from the U.S. the solution to the elementary issues which a nuclear weapons state should have naturally guaranteed a non-nuclear state.
Had the U.S. respected the NPT from the outset and given the non-nuclear states unconditional assurances against the use of nukes and refrained from pursuing the development of smaller nukes for preemptive attack, the DPRK-U.S. nuclear issue would not have surfaced.
The U.S. should also have respected the legitimate right of non-nuclear states to use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
Closely following the conference, the DPRK expected that the U.S. would honestly repent of its past wrongdoings, though belatedly. But it behaved quite contrary to the expectation.
Things will not change as long as the U.S. keeps pursuing its strategy to dominate the world based on its nuclear stick policy.
The outcome of the conference left a question mark: Even in case of the DPRK's return to the six-party talks will the U.S. truly give the DPRK exceptional assurances which it has never done to any other non-nuclear states?
It was against this backdrop that the DPRK proposed to discuss the nuclear disarmament issue at the six-party talks on an equal standing.
It is the DPRK's judgment that it would be hard to expect any good results from the six-party talks should the U.S. stick to its self-justified nuclear policy and assertions.
Koryo-Global Credit Bank Opens
Pyongyang, June 4 (KCNA) -- The Koryo-Global Credit Bank has opened.
An opening ceremony of the bank was held at Yanggakdo International Hotel on June 3.
Present at the ceremony were Pak Yong Chil, president of the Koryo Bank, and officials and employees of the bank, officials concerned, David Arthur Slinn, British ambassador to the DPRK, foreign diplomatic envoys and embassy members.
It was also attended by Chairman of the Global Group Johnny Hon and his party.
Speeches were made at the ceremony.
Chairman Hon referred to the establishment of the bank which will contribute to promoting economic cooperation and exchange between the U.K. and the DPRK.
The Korean people are making all possible efforts for economic development based on the powerful foundations of the self-supporting national economy laid in the spirit of self-reliance and on advanced sciences and technology, he stressed.
He expressed the belief that the credit bank set up by the joint efforts of the two countries would contribute to understanding and development of friendly relations between the two peoples.
Pak Yong Chil said in his speech that it is the consistent stand of the DPRK government to expand and develop cooperation and exchange with different countries in the economic field.
Noting that the bank established as the first product of cooperation in the field of finance between the DPRK and U.K. would promote the development of economic relations between the two countries, he declared the opening of the bank.
A reception was given in the evening in connection with the opening ceremony.

Pochonbo Revolutionary Battle Site
Pyongyang, June 4 (KCNA) -- An endless stream of people have been visiting Pochonbo revolutionary battle site in Ryanggang Province, the Democratic
People's Republic of Korea, these days.
On June 4, Juche 26 (1937) President Kim Il Sung, the legendary hero of the anti-Japanese war, commanded an attack on Pochonbo.
The Pochonbo battle marked a decisive turning point in the liberation of the ruined Korea and dealt a telling blow at the Japanese Empire which boasted of being one of the five powers in the world.
There are in the battle site Kusi Barrage, Konjang Hill and the post where the President commanded the battle, and the police substation, subcounty office, fire hall and various other enemy's administrative centers which were stormed by the Korean People's Revolutionary Army. They have been preserved as they were.
The Kusi Barrage, 8 kilometers northwest of Pochonbo, is the place where the main unit of the KPRA crossed a raft bridge over the River Amnok.
Kongjang Hill is the place where the main unit led by the President bivouacked for a daytime to make the preparation for the battle on the way to Pochonbo. There Kim Il Sung issued detailed combat orders to the guerrillas and, after the battle, took a rest for a while and conducted political activities among people in the homeland.
A monument "May Konjang Hill shine for ever" was erected there on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the victory in the battle of Pochonbo.
There are in the command post the then poplar tree kept in a glass tube and the machine gun which was deployed by the side of the post to defend the headquarters.
Standing in front of the forest conservation office building is the zelkova with one side burned when the building was engulfed in flame during the battle.
In order to hand down the immortal exploits performed by Kim Il Sung, his statue was built on June 4, 1955 on the very place where he made a speech at that time.
There are in the battle site the Monument to Comrade Kim Il Sung's Revolutionary Activities and Pochonbo Revolutionary Museum.
The Pochonbo Revolutionary Battle Site has served as a center for the education of the working people in the revolutionary traditions.
