U.S. "Human Rights" Offensive under Fire in S. Korea
Pyongyang, August 31 (KCNA) -- A spokesman for the Reunification Solidarity of south Korea reportedly issued a commentary on August 21 lashing at the U.S. appointment of an "envoy for the human rights issue of north Korea". The commentary charged that this appointment is a sort of attack as it goes against the spirit of the six-party talks.
The action taken by the United States to bring forward again the "human rights issue" as part of its campaign against the north brought once again disappointment to the Koreans who desire an early settlement of the nuclear issue and touched off their anger, the commentary said, adding: The U.S., which is not entitled to talk about human rights, is persisting in its smear campaign against the north. This cannot be construed otherwise than a sinister aim to vitiate the atmosphere of national cooperation and reconciliation on the Korean Peninsula at present and bring the trend of DPRK-U.S. dialogue back to the past confrontation.
An act of blocking the reunification constitutes the worst violation of human rights on the Korean Peninsula and to cooperate in the efforts to achieve reunification and frustrate the moves for a war mean the fullest guarantee of human rights, the commentary said.
It urged the U.S. to ponder over the ardent passion for reunification on the Korean Peninsula once again, withdraw the base and futile "human rights" offensive and the hostile policy toward the north and opt for warming its relations with the north at once.
Memorial Service for Victims to Explosion of Ukishima-maru
Tokyo, August 29 (KNS-KCNA) -- A memorial service was held in Maizuru City, Kyoto Prefecture, Japan, on August 24, 60 years since thousands of Koreans aboard the ship Ukishima-maru on the way back home with joy at the liberation of Korea were ruthlessly killed by the blowing up of the ship by the Japanese imperialists.

Kim Tok Chun, chairman of the Santan Branch, Kyoto Prefecture, of Chongryon, in his address said those aboard the ship were Koreans who had been anxiously waiting for the day of their return home. No word and letters are adequate to describe the grievances of those people who were subjected to forcible labor and maltreatment by the Japanese imperialists, he added.
Noting that the truth behind the blowing up of the ship has not been properly made clear over the last 60 years, he demanded the Japanese government clarify in detail the truth of the terrible incident and make an official apology and compensation to the victims and their bereaved families.
An "evening of culture" took place on the same day.

Japan Urged to Settle Its Past Monstrous Crimes
Pyongyang, August 31 (KCNA) -- The Japanese authorities should opt to settle Japan's past crimes as early as possible, bearing deep in mind that they can never justify nor erase Japan's blood-stained past history.
A spokesman for the Association of Korean Victims of Forcible Drafting and Their Bereaved Families demanded this in a statement issued Wednesday denouncing the massacre of Koreans in Japan committed by the Japanese reactionaries right after the Kanto quake in 1923.
September every year brings to the Korean people's minds the monstrous massacre of Koreans committed by the beast-like Japanese imperialists after the Kanto quake, lashing them into simmering indignation, the statement says, and goes on:
The Japanese authorities have not yet properly probed the truth about this mass killing though more than 80 years have passed since then. Worse still, they are evading the responsibility to reflect on, apologize and compensate for the massacre.
The terror-ridden atmosphere created by right-wing gangsters of Japan through campaigns against the DPRK and the General Association of Korean Residents in Japan reminds one of the situation in the wake of the Kanto quake.
The statement bitterly condemned the desperate anti-DPRK moves of the authorities and right-wing reactionaries of Japan on behalf of all Korean victims of Japan's past crimes and their bereaved families.
Kim Jong Il Inspects Farm of KPA Unit
Pyongyang, August 31 (KCNA) -- Supreme Commander of the Korean People's Army Kim Jong Il, general secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea and chairman of the National Defence Commission of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, inspected Farm No. 1116 of KPA Unit 534.
He was accompanied by Pak Pong Ju, premier of the DPRK Cabinet, Ri Kyong Sik, minister of Agriculture, and KPA Generals Ri Myong Su, Hyon Chol Hae and Pak Jae Gyong.
Going round the farm's fields under a variety of crops, he learned in detail about on what scientific and intensive basis agriculture has been placed and how farming is done this year and set forth highly important tasks which would serve as guidelines for the nation's agricultural development.
He proposed tasks to be fulfilled to thoroughly implement the policy of bringing about a radical turn in the seed improvement.
He stressed the need to pay special attention to the work to develop and obtain more high-yielding strains suited to climatic and soil conditions.
He underlined the need to establish a well-regulated system of seed selection, produce and supply a sufficient quantity of good strains required by every area and farm and introduce newly cultivated strains into agricultural production in time.
He set forth tasks to be carried out to strictly observe the principle of the right crop on the right soil and the right crop in the right time.
He called upon every area and farm to take into full account what crops and strains ensure high yields and effective farming according to the geographical characteristics and soil conditions and sow the most suitable crops and strains.
He underscored the need for the rural economy to make thorough-going preparations for farming in time every year and carry out all farm work in the right season qualitatively, without missing time.
He laid down tasks to be fulfilled to thoroughly implement the policy of bringing about a signal turn in potato cultivation.
He said it is necessary to build more modern farms cultivating potato in Paekam County and other places suitable for potato cultivation as required by the new century and indicated an orientation and ways to do so.
He also proposed tasks for successfully cultivating two crops a year.
He called upon all the agricultural workers to take firm hold on the WPK's policy of double cropping and wage a dynamic drive for its implementation so as to confidently develop it into a Juche-based farming system in agriculture and a farming method of Korean style.
He set forth tasks to be carried out to steadily improve the farming method.
Only by placing agriculture on a scientific and technological basis in keeping with bionic requirements is it possible to boost the grain yield with less materials and manpower, he said, underlining the need to actively introduce advanced farming methods while rounding off the cultivating system of Korean style.
He underscored the need for all farms to meticulously organize the work to put the agricultural production onto a high scientific and intensive basis and thus steadily create new effective farming methods in line with the principle of profitability.
He set forth tasks for realizing the comprehensive mechanization of agriculture.
He noted that it is necessary to rapidly realize the comprehensive mechanization of agriculture in order not only to settle the acute shortage of manpower in the countryside and completely free the farmers from toil-some work but also to introduce the latest science and technology with a view to industrializing and modernizing agriculture.
He underscored the need to accelerate and wind up the technological updating of farm machine plants including tractor plants to produce and supply more efficient and modern farm machines to farms.
He set forth tasks for increasing fruit and edible oil production.
In order to sufficiently provide the people with a variety of fruits and edible oil, it is imperative to energetically push ahead with the work to replace old trees with high yielding young fruit trees and find out reserve areas for cultivation by the method of increasing the per-hectare yield of grain so as to plant more fruit and oil-bearing trees, he noted.
He earnestly called upon all the leading officials to meticulously organize the work to this end and work in the same staunch revolutionary fighting spirit as displayed by the commanding officers of the KPA in order to provide the people with a more abundant life as early as possible.
