Improved Inter-Korean Relations Called for
Pyongyang, October 21 (KCNA) -- Genuine national reconciliation and unity can be achieved and they will lead to the reunification of Korea only when the inter-Korean relations of distrust and confrontation have been definitely replaced by those of trust and reconciliation. Rodong Sinmun Friday says this in a signed article.
It goes on: The north and the south should make tireless and sincere efforts for substantially developing the north-south relations in order to consolidate the successes achieved in the efforts to carry out the cause of national reunification and positively promote the present reality.
What is most urgent is to put an end to all face-saving practices in the north-south relations and take measures to substantially promote national reconciliation and unity, guided by the spirit of "By our nation itself," the matter earnestly discussed at the 16th inter-Korean ministerial talks and clarified in its joint press release.
The north-south relations can be the genuine ones between compatriots and all problems can be solved smoothly only when the north and the south recognize and respect each other. This matter presents itself as a more urgent one because there exist differing ideologies and systems in the north and the south and both sides are not willing to give up theirs. Any side's denial of the other side's ideology and system would only trigger off confrontation and make it impossible to expect any improvement in the inter-Korean relations.
This being a hard reality, south Korea is not yet free from such consciousness of confrontation as refusing to recognize the system in the north and rejecting it, insisting on its ideology, system and ism.
As a matter of fact, the ultra-right conservative forces in south Korea including the Grand National Party are now openly painting the north as their "principal enemy," invoking the "National Security Law," to lay a stumbling block in the way of the process to warm up the north-south relations and promote the reunification movement.
Now is the time for south Korea to stop rejecting and antagonizing the north and make a bold decision to scrap the outdated laws and institutional mechanisms such as the "NSL" inciting the inter-Korean confrontation. To do so is a proper attitude toward the issue of the north-south relations and a true stand to work for the nation and reunification. Maintaining this approach and stand alone would make it possible to substantially develop the north-south relations as required by the era of "By our nation itself" and desired by all Koreans.
All Koreans in the north and the south and overseas sincerely hope that the inter-Korean relations will develop more substantially in the spirit of "By our nation itself" and follow their prospect with deep concern.
Kim Jong Il Inspects KPA Combined Unit Command
Pyongyang, October 21 (KCNA) -- Supreme Commander of the Korean People's Army Kim Jong Il, general secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea and chairman of the DPRK National Defence Commission, inspected the Command of the KPA's Large Combined Unit 526.
He first went round the monuments to the on-the-spot instructions and guidance of President Kim Il Sung and the room for the education in the history of the revolution and the room devoted to the history of the combined unit.
The unit is honored to receive field guidance given by Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il dozens of times.
Greatly satisfied to learn that the unit has successfully built the room for the education in the history of the revolution and used it for brisk education, he said that the KPA should always intensify the educational work so as to lead all the soldiers to single-heartedly repay the profound benevolence of Kim Il Sung.
He saw the records of victory that bear witness to the proud path covered by the unit.
He highly praised the unit's feats, saying it is a unit with a long history as it has performed shining exploits in defending the country and building socialism by fully displaying matchless patriotic devotion and popular heroism for the sake of the Party and the leader, the country and the people since the days of the hard-fought war.
He acquainted himself with the work of the commanding officers and advanced the tasks which would serve as guidelines in increasing the unit's combat capability, making the rounds of the operation commanding rooms and the military study rooms of the unit.
Going round facilities for the ideological education and entertainment including a servicepersons' hall and a library, he learned about how the political work is done among soldiers and stressed the need to always pay primary attention to the ideological work.
If one reads a lot of books, one can arm oneself with the revolutionary idea of the WPK more firmly and acquire versatile knowledge and enhance one's cultural attainments, he said, underscoring the need to publish and distribute more reminiscences of the President, "Reminiscences of the Anti-Japanese Guerrillas", "Among the People", revolutionary novels and other books.
Then he took deep care of the living of its servicepersons, going round supply service facilities including a mess hall, a kitchen, a non-staple food store and a combined food processing room.
He highly appreciated the unit's achievements, saying that it has made remarkable progress in the combat and political training, the unit management and all other aspects.
He had a photo session with the servicepersons of the unit.
He was accompanied by Vice Marshal of the KPA Kim Yong Chun, member of the NDC of the DPRK and chief of the General Staff of the KPA, KPA Generals Ri Myong Su, Hyon Chol Hae and Pak Jae Gyong, Ri Jae Il, first vice department director of the WPK Central Committee, and Hwang Pyong So, vice department director of the WPK Central Committee.

Wonsanman Saltern Pays off
Pyongyang, October 21 (KCNA) -- The newly built Wonsanman Saltern situated in Yomjon-ri, Chonnae County, Kangwon Province of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, is meeting the demand of the province for salt from this year. The province had to bring salt from western coastal areas so far.
True to the behest of President Kim Il Sung and intention of leader Kim Jong Il on building a saltern in the eastern coastal area to solve the salt issue there, people of the province started the construction of the saltern in reed fields in March Juche 87 (1998).
They had never suspended the huge project of three stages even in difficult conditions and thus succeeded in building salt fields covering hundreds of hectares.
The saltern, which has already overfulfiled this year's production plan, also produces refined salt.
Kim Jong Il, who called at the saltern on a sultry day of July this year, was very satisfied with the grand industrial construction carried out by the province for the people and clearly indicated the ways for increasing salt production.

Displayed at the demonstration dish show were over 150 dishes of 7 kinds including potato food and noodle. Particularly, newly developed national dishes drew the interest of the visitors.

U.S. Political Farce under Fire
Pyongyang, October 21 (KCNA) -- The United States has recently escalated its smear campaign against the DPRK.
Typical of this is its fiction about a "deal in counterfeits" floated by the U.S. this time.
The U.S. is claiming that the DPRK is massively issuing highly sophisticated false 100 US dollar notes known as "super money" and spreading them worldwide.
In order to verify this, no sooner had Garland, leader of the Irish Workers' Party, been arrested than the U.S. Department of Justice released on October 7 a "written indictment" which it has long prepared.
The "written indictment" characterized by extreme nature of politicization and selection said that there was a "deal in counterfeits" between the DPRK and Garland.
Nothing is clumsier than what was invented by the U.S., a past master at lies, fabrication, disinformation and plot.
What matters is that Americans who claim to be "politicians" are advertising this case as their latest success made in the U.S. increased efforts to prevent north Korea from committing widespread international crimes.
The hue and cry over the non-existent DPRK's "production and deal in counterfeits" raised by the U.S. again is nothing but a clumsy and base political farce intended to impair the image of the DPRK at any cost and justify its moves to isolate the former in the international arena and tighten its blockade against the former.
The U.S. escalated smear campaign against the DPRK only goes to prove that the former regards it as one of the basic means to create impression that the latter is a "rogue state" in a bid to realize its ambition for bringing down the latter's "system" and the former remains unchanged in its policy for isolating and stifling the DPRK internationally.
The socialist system in the DPRK was chosen and built by the Korean people themselves according to their will and wishes.
Because of the nature of the socialist system and its popular character there can never happen nor exist in the DPRK such "illegal deals" as "deal in counterfeits" or "drug smuggling", social ills in the capitalist society.
It is the height of folly for the U.S. to speak ill of the system in the DPRK and try to bring down it on the basis of the U.S. wrong view, the cause of all social evils, though it does not know how advantageous socialism of Korean style is and how much the Korean people value and love it.
The U.S. seems to be upbeat after succeeding in bringing down socialism that had existed in different countries for several decades and effecting leadership changes there through the "strategy for peaceful transition", persistent psychological warfare and bloodless "color revolution." The U.S. is, however, seriously mistaken if it thinks it can bring down the system in the DPRK through its frantic smear campaign against it.
The U.S. would be well advised to abandon its foolish attempt to realize its wild ambition for stifling the DPRK and make a policy switchover as Washington is its counterpart of the six-party talks with their opening just around the corner.
Row of S. Korean Ultra-Right Conservatives Accused
Pyongyang, October 21 (KCNA) -- The south Korean ultra-right conservatives including the Grand National Party are kicking up a frantic row to check the abolition of the "National Security Law", incite an atmosphere of confrontation against the north and anti-reunification and realize their attempt to come back to power under the pretext of judicial treatment of Kang Jong Gu, professor of Dongguk University.
A spokesman for the Central Committee of the Democratic Front for the Reunification of the Fatherland said this, answering the question raised by KCNA Friday.
The row shows the pitiable plight of those who have been driven out of the trend of the times and are making last-ditch efforts, the spokesman said, and went on:
The GNP is rushing headlong toward confrontation and anti-reunification, clamoring that it would conduct a grand people's movement to defend the liberal democratic system and check the abolition of the NSL as the system and its nature are shaking to their foundation.
What it called the nature of the system is no more than a foolish talk seeking to incite the hostility toward fellow countrymen and the anti-reunification feeling of confrontation.
The south Korean people from all walks of life should clearly see the essence of the anti-reunification row kicked up by the GNP and other ultra-right conservative forces under the U.S. manipulation and deal a heavy blow to them and ostracize such scum of history as the GNP which has no future at an early date.
