Kim Jong Il's Birthday Celebrated in Different Countries

     Pyongyang, February 19 (KCNA) -- Lecture meetings were held by the Left United Party of Romania and the Nigerian Group for the Study of the Juche Philosophy and a photo exhibition and a lecture meeting by the Rabitra Bahtera Pratama Co. of Indonesia on Feb. 9 and 10 on the occasion of the February holiday. Displayed in the venues of the functions were famous works of President Kim Il Sung and leader Kim Jong Il and photos showing their Songun leadership exploits and photos on the theme of "Celebration of the 60th Anniversary of the Workers' Party of Korea". Niculae Pavelescu, vice-president of the Romanian party, said that the Songun politics is the unique political method which makes it possible to defend the sovereignty of the country and dignity of the nation and Korean-style socialism by applying the Juche idea and the army-first idea founded by Kim Il Sung.
    Thanks to the Songun politics the DPRK is dynamically advancing to emerge a great prosperous powerful socialist nation while smashing the moves of the U.S.-led imperialists to isolate and stifle it, he noted.
    Meanwhile, a lecture meeting was held at Mongolian State University, round-table talks at Darhan Technical College and a meeting and an art performance at the Kim Jong Il Kindergarten in Darhan Ol Province, Mongolia on Feb. 9 and 10 on the same occasion.

Floral Basket to DPRK Embassy in Guinea

     Pyongyang, February 19 (KCNA) -- Guinean President Lansana Conte sent a basket of flowers to the DPRK embassy in Conakry on Feb. 15 in congratulation of leader Kim Jong Il's birthday. The floral basket was laid before the full-length portrait of President Kim Il Sung and leader Kim Jong Il.
    Written on the ribbon of the basket were letters reading "I pay my respects to His Excellency Kim Jong Il. Guinean President General Lansana Conte".

     Pyongyang, February 19 (KCNA) -- Great King Norodom Sihanouk sent a large basket of flowers to the DPRK embassy in Phnom Penh in congratulation of the birthday of leader Kim Jong Il. All Koreans Urged to Work Hard for National Reunification

     Pyongyang, February 19 (KCNA) -- An appeal adopted at the joint meeting of the government, political parties and organizations of the DPRK held in Pyongyang on Jan. 26 is now commanding support and approval of all Koreans in the north, the south and overseas in their dynamic movement for national reunification for the new year and instilling stronger enthusiasm and will for reunification and patriotism into them. Rodong Sinmun Sunday observes this in a signed article.
    It goes on:
    The joint meeting set this year as "a year of the patriotic movement for independent reunification, peace against war and the great national unity" and called for dynamically waging the movement. This was a very just and timely action in view of the essential requirements for settling the issue of national reunification, the prevailing situation and the trend of the development of the reunification movement. In order to energetically carry out the cause of national reunification this year all the fellow countrymen at home and abroad should wage a dynamic movement for independent reunification under the uplifted banner of "By our nation itself." The north and the south should strictly observe the principle of independence, closely cooperate with each other and solve all the issues from the viewpoint and stand of attaching importance and priority to the Korean nation, placing the dignity and interests of the nation above all, as required by the idea of "By our nation itself" when handling the national issue.
    In order to bring about a fresh phase of the cause of national reunification this year it is necessary to conduct a dynamic nationwide movement for peace against war. The north and the south are a community linked with the same destiny as far as the issue of war or peace is concerned. It is quite natural for the north and the south to stand against the U.S. imperialists' war moves. The Koreans are the masters of this land and peace on the Korean Peninsula should, therefore, be protected by their concerted efforts.
    To achieve great national unity provides a basic guarantee for accomplishing the historic cause of national reunification as early as possible.
    If the Koreans are to achieve great national unity they should put aside all the differences on the principle of placing the common cause and interests of the nation above anything else.
    All the fellow countrymen should turn out as one in the patriotic movement for independent reunification, peace against war and great national unity to dynamically advance the cause of national reunification with exceptionally strong patriotic enthusiasm and renewed resolution.

All-People Organization for Opposing Conclusion of FTA Formed in S. Korea

     Pyongyang, February 19 (KCNA) -- A preparatory committee for the all-people measure committee for protecting the screen quota and checking the south Korea-U.S. "Free Trade Agreement (FTA)" was reportedly inaugurated in south Korea on Feb. 15. It groups at least 110 civic and public organizations at present. That day representatives of civic and public organizations including the "Moviemen's Measure Committee for Checking the Cultural Aggression and Protecting the Screen Quota" held a press conference at place near the U.S. embassy in Seoul as regards the inauguration of the organization.
    Speakers at the press conference charged that negotiations for the conclusion of the FTA between south Korea and the United States are being conducted to meet the interests of the U.S. in disregard of the interests and will of the south Korean people. Noting that the "government" is unhesitatingly conducting the above-said negotiations with the U.S. despite the fact that it is aware that the conclusion of the FTA would reduce this land into a tool for the U.S. imperialists' economic plunder, they termed its behavior a humiliating act.
    A press release read out at the press conference said that the FTA is a second "Korea-Japan annexation treaty" and a second document declaring "the oneness of Japan and Korea". It declared that the preparatory committee for the all-people measure committee for protecting the screen quota and checking the south Korea-U.S. "Free Trade Agreement" would check and frustrate the FTA by the concerted efforts of all the people.
    We will expand and develop the actions against the FTA such as an all-people cultural function and an all-people seminar into an all-people movement by beginning with a candlelight cultural function in Kwanghwamun of Seoul on Feb. 17, it noted.

February Holiday Celebrated in Different Countries

     Pyongyang, February 18 (KCNA) -- Meetings, seminars, film shows and photo exhibitions were held in Bangladesh, Uganda, Tanzania, Britain, Switzerland and France from Feb. 4 to 11 on the occasion of the February holiday. Displayed in the venues were photos showing the undying Songun leadership exploits of Kim Jong Il and revolutionary battle sites in the area of Mt. Paektu. Screened at the film shows were Korean films "Brilliant History of the Great Leadership" and "My Socialist Country."
    At the functions speakers said that they were very pleased to significantly celebrate the birthday of Kim Jong Il as the common holiday of mankind. They highly praised him as a peerlessly brilliant commander who has worked miracles of historic significance with his Songun policy.
    His birthday is a common holiday not only of the Korean people but of the progressive mankind aspiring after an independent world, they stressed, wishing him good health and greater success in his work for the building of a great prosperous powerful socialist nation and the reunification of the country.
    The moves of the United States styling itself as the "world's only superpower" are bound to go bust in face of the single-mindedly united Korean people and the struggle of the Workers' Party of Korea will always emerge victorious as it has the experienced and tested statesman as its leader, they noted.
    A congratulatory letter to Kim Jong Il was adopted at the joint seminar held in Bangladesh.

Kim Jong Il Praised by Egyptian Public Figure

     Pyongyang, February 18 (KCNA) -- The DPRK is sure to win as there are the headquarters headed by leader Kim Jong Il who has defended truth, principles and the banner of socialism and the people rallied around him, said the chairman of the Misr Arab Socialist Party of Egypt, in a statement issued on Feb. 11 on the occasion of the February holiday. He said that Kim Jong Il has successfully carried forward the idea and cause of President Kim Il Sung and pursued the unique Songun policy. Kim Jong Il has strengthened the army and encouraged all the people to learn from the fighting spirit of the servicepersons and bolstered the military capability in every way despite the U.S. vicious moves to stifle socialist Korea, he noted, and continued: Under his wise guidance the DPRK has acquired nuclear deterrent, while shattering the U.S. moves to isolate and stifle it and firmly standing against dominationism.

Memorial Service for Victims of Forcible Drafting of Koreans Held

     Pyongyang, February 18 (KCNA) -- A memorial service was held on the seashore of Nishikiwa on Feb. 4 for those Koreans who were killed at the erstwhile Josei Coal Mine in Ube City of Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan, after being forcibly taken there before the liberation of Korea, according to Choson Sinbo published in Japan. The paper reported that at least 130 Koreans were killed on Feb. 3, 1942 while doing slave labor after being taken there.
    Present there were bereaved families, members of the society for recording in history the disaster at the Josei Coal Mine, who have demanded the probe into the truth about the accident and the erection of a monument to those killed, representatives of the Yamaguchi prefectural group for probing the truth behind the forcible drafting of Koreans, Chongryon (General Association of Korean Residents in Japan) and "Mindan", Koreans in Japan and Japanese citizens.
    The participants observed a moment's silence in memory of the victims. Speakers at the service said that the truth about the accident has not yet been probed and even a monument to the victims has not been erected although 64 years have passed since then. They expressed indignation at the Japanese government which has not yet owned the responsibility and made apology for this but shunned the issue of erecting the monument.
    Read out at the service was a memorial address from the south Korean committee for probing the truth about the damage done by the forcible drafting during the Japanese imperialists' occupation.
    Earlier, bereaved families and representatives of the organizations supporting them visited the Yamaguchi Prefectural Office and others to urge the Japanese government to apologize for the accident and erect the monument.

Anti-U.S. Solidarity Meeting Held in Seoul

     Pyongyang, February 18 (KCNA) -- The 77th anti-U.S. solidarity meeting was reportedly held at Citizens Park in Seoul on Feb. 14. Present there were members of eight civic and public organizations including the South Headquarters of the National Alliance for the Country's Reunification, the People for Achieving Peace and Reunification, the Family Movement for Realizing Democracy and the Anti-U.S. Youth Society.
    The participants exposed and denounced the injustice and danger of the recent moves of the south Korean and U.S. authorities, holding placards reading "No plot to validate permanent presence of U.S. forces in south Korea!" "Stop to the meeting of south Korea-U.S. alliance security policy initiative!" and "Let's check the expansion of the U.S. military base in Phyongthaek and do farming this year, too!" Speakers at the meeting accused the "government" of zealously supporting the U.S. forces in their efforts to realize their "strategic flexibility" as evidenced by its issue of even a notice demanding an end to farming in Phyongthaek. They called upon all the people to turn out in the struggle to frustrate this move.
    Then the participants thrust to the U.S. embassy a letter of protest demanding the U.S. immediately stop the expansion of its military base in Phyongthaek.

15th International Figure Skating Festival for "Paektusan Cup" Closes

     Pyongyang, February 18 (KCNA) -- The 15th International Figure Skating Festival for "Paektusan Cup" which opened here on Feb. 15 on the occasion of the auspicious February holiday closed on Feb. 17. A closing ceremony took place at the Ice Rink that day.
    Present there were Yang Hyong Sop, vice-president of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly, Kim Jung Rin, secretary of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea, officials concerned, working people and sportspersons in the city, staff members of foreign embassies here and foreign guests. Prizes were awarded to the figure skaters who displayed high techniques at the festival.
    Festival prizes went to Yu Xiaoyang and Wang Chen from China, Alexei Yagudin from Russia, Sergei Shilyaev from Belarus, Jaqueline Belenyesiova from Slovakia, Alla Beknazarova and Volodymyr Zuyev from Ukraine, Olga Akimova and Aleksandr Shakalov from Uzbekistan, Tomas Janecko from the Check Republic, Nadezhda Paretskaya from Kazakhstan and Ri Song Chol from the DPRK. Mun Jae Dok, chairman of the Physical Culture and Sports Guidance Commission, in his closing address said that the festival proved successful thanks to the sincere positive efforts of the participants during the festival. We are pleased with the positive cooperation rendered by China, Russia and other countries to make the festival successful by sending their players to each festival which has so far taken place 15 times, he noted, and continued:
    We will make every possible effort to develop the festival into a big and prestigious international sports event praising the greatness and feats of leader Kim Jong Il in name and reality.
    He declared the festival closed, expressing the belief that all the participants in the festival would meet in the future, too, in the spirit of independence, peace and friendship to successfully adorn the significant stage of the February holiday. Art Performances Given to Celebrate February 16

     Pyongyang, February 18 (KCNA) -- Art performances were given at capital and local theatres on the occasion of the birthday of leader Kim Jong Il. Given at the State Drama Theatre was revolutionary drama "Woman Comrade of Mt. Paektu" successfully depicting in a noble artistic canvas the transparent spirit of devotedly defending the leader displayed by anti-Japanese war hero Kim Jong Suk who gave birth to the bright star of Mt. Paektu and defended President Kim Il Sung at the cost of her life.
    A performance titled "Let's Go Cheerfully" given by artistes of the State Comic Troupe and an acrobatic performance given by the Pyongyang Circus showing peculiar skills and gifts brought revolutionary optimism and laughter to the citizens of Pyongyang greeting the auspicious February holiday with great joy.
    Meanwhile, art performances were given at art theatres and houses of culture in North Hwanghae, Kangwon, Ryanggang, South Hamgyong, North Hamgyong and other provinces.

Kim Jong Il Highly Praised by Russian

     Pyongyang, February 18 (KCNA) -- Chief of the Military Orchestral Service and its Chief Conductor of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation Valerii Khalilov who is leading the central military band of the Defence Ministry of Russia was interviewed by KCNA at Pyongyang Airport before his departure on Feb. 17. He extended heartfelt thanks to Korean friends on behalf of all the members of the military band for helping their successful performances and visits. Pointing out that they visited the old home in Mangyongdae where President Kim Il Sung was born, the venue of the 10th Kimjongilia Festival, the Revolutionary Martyrs Cemetery on Mt. Taesong, the Liberation Tower and other places, he said: We have come to know well about the fact that Kim Il Sung who was born into a patriotic family embarked upon the road of revolution with his great intention for the liberation of Korea in his early years and led the arduous anti-Japanese war to victory and that heroic forerunners laid down their lives for the freedom and independence of the country.
    I composed "March of Songun Victory" praising the Songun policy, fascinated by leader Kim Jong Il attaching importance to the military affairs and giving top priority to the military affairs in state politics when I visited Korea for the first time. Waltz "Friendship" sang of the Russia-Korea friendly ties with melodies selected from the music of the two countries.

General Secretary of WPB Leaves Here

     Pyongyang, February 18 (KCNA) -- Baudouin Deckers, general secretary of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Belgium, left here for home today after winding up his eight-day visit to the DPRK. He was seen off at the airport by Kim Thae Jong, vice department director of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea.
    During his stay he inspected the venue of the 10th Kimjongilia Festival, the Victorious Fatherland Liberation War Museum, the University of National Economics and other places.

Shining Achievements Made by Three-Revolution Red Flag Movement

     Pyongyang, February 18 (KCNA) -- The dynamic three-revolution red flag movement, an all-people movement in the DPRK, has registered big achievements in the three revolutions--ideological, technical and cultural. This movement initiated in November Juche 64 (1975) has involved all fields and units, modeling all members of the society on the Juche idea.
    In this course more than 25,400 units won the title of the three-revolution red flag and more than 2.4 million workers, farmers and intellectuals have become three-revolution standard-bearers.
    Through the intensified ideological revolution all the people have grown to be Songun revolutionary comrades and ideologically strong persons who share their idea, intention and destiny with the leader.
    Effective ideological education has been conducted at many units including the Komdok Mining Complex and the Ryongsong Machine Complex. As a result, the three-revolution standard-bearers and other people are making their lives worthwhile on the sacred road of devotedly safeguarding the leader.
    An energetic drive has been under way to learn from the spiritual world of the unassuming heroes and persons of distinguished services of the old generation who devoted themselves to the prosperity of the country. This resulted in the emergence of more than 21,300 unassuming men of distinguished service and those who displayed the beautiful deeds of helping and leading each other forward. The single-mindedly united DPRK has turned into a big harmonious family.
    Dynamic progress made in the technical revolution has helped increase the economic self-reliance of the country. Thanks to the vigorous mass technical renovation the number of scientific and technical innovation proposals grew seven times as of February 2006 as compared with that in Juche 64 (1975).
    The work to place the national economy on a Juche basis has been actively pushed forward as evidenced by the solution of raw material, fuel and power problems by use of the locally available resources and the industrial inter-sector structures have been further perfected.
    The scientists and technicians of the country successfully launched satellite "Kwangmyongsong 1", manufactured a scanning tunneling microscope and registered many other successes in latest scientific researches, thereby powerfully demonstrating the scientific and technological potential of the DPRK that has reached the world's level. The modernization of the national economy has been put on a higher stage. Thousands of technical innovation proposals have been introduced into the field of machine industry over the last decade.
    Industrialization and modernization of agriculture have been accelerated to carry out the policy of the Workers' Party of Korea for rural technical revolution. In this course, there have emerged many exemplary units in the comprehensive mechanization of agriculture including the Migok Co-op Farm and the Wangjaesan Co-op Farm and a solid foundation has been laid for the development of agriculture. A fresh turn has been brought about in the cultural revolution, too. At least 1.1 million more technicians and specialists have been trained thanks to the higher educational system and the study-while-working system, bringing the nation's number of intellectuals to more than 2.1 million.
    The number of holders of academic degrees has increased 25 times as compared with that in Juche 64 (1975). 76.5 percent of them are young scientists. And most of them became doctors and masters in the worthwhile period of the Three-Revolution Red Flag Movement.
    A lot of monumental masterpieces such as multi-part feature film "The Nation and Destiny" and the grand gymnastic and artistic performance "Arirang" were created in the filed of literature and arts and the policy for popularizing the sports has also been successfully implemented.
    Thanks to the dynamic movement to introduce the revolutionary soldier culture spectacular sceneries of socialism appeared in different parts of the country and the appearance of the streets, villages and worksites has changed beyond recognition.
