Repeal of S. Korea-U.S. Military Treaty Demanded

    Pyongyang, October 2 (KCNA) -- The south Korea-U.S. gMutual Defence Treatyh running counter to the requirements of the June 15 era of reunification and unanimously denounced by the whole nation must be repealed without delay, says Rodong Sinmun in an article Monday upon the lapse of 53 years after the conclusion of the treaty. The treaty which the U.S. imperialists fabricated on Oct. 1, 1953, by turning the Syngman Rhee clique round its little finger is a military treaty for aggression, which has hindered reconciliation and reunification of the Korean nation and brought unspeakable misfortunes and calamities to the south Koreans by justifying the U.S. imperialist aggression troopsf occupation of south Korea and their moves to provoke a war of aggression against the DPRK, notes the author of the article, and continues:
    The treaty, a product of the U.S. imperialistsf heinous ambition to dominate the whole of Korea, runs diametrically counter to the desire of the south Koreans for independence, peace and reunification.
    Over the past half a century or more, the United States, basing itself on this treaty, has maintained and bolstered its military occupation and domination of south Korea and maliciously challenged the Korean nationfs cause of independent and peaceful reunification.
    Monstrous are the misfortunes and pains, sacrifices and losses suffered by the south Koreans under the treaty. Lording it over south Korea as the ruler on the strength of the treaty, the U.S. has interfered in the internal affairs of south Korea as it pleased and intensified control over the whole of society and plunder of it, treating south Korea as its junior "ally."
    South Korea which is allegedly provided with the gsecurity umbrellah of the U.S. under the treaty has had its national interests infringed upon with its sovereignty and dignity crudely violated. South Korea is now put to shame, failing to assert its own principle and interests while reading the U.S. face.
    South Korea is the only place in the world where such brigandish and aggressive treaty as south Korea-U.S. gMutual Defence Treatyh holds sway, ruthlessly violating peoplefs freedom, democracy and even their rights to existence while preventing the nation from carving out its own destiny independently.
    There is no justification for such aggressive treaty with outsiders as this treaty to exist in the present era when the north and the south of Korea are opening up the road of independent reunification, cooperating and exchanging with each other in accordance with the idea of gBy our nation itself.h

U.S. Double Standards and Moves for Fresh Arms Race Assailed

    Pyongyang, October 2 (KCNA) -- South Korea recently developed a cruise missile targeted against the DPRK. Commenting on this, a signed commentary of Rodong Sinmun Monday says:
    The U.S. asserts the DPRKfs missile launch is intolerable, while conniving at and supporting south Koreafs missile development. This is a brigandish double-dealing logic and a revelation of its design to invade the DPRK.
    The U.S. is contemplating deploying south Korean troops on the forefront when invading the DPRK in case of gemergencyh on the Korean Peninsula. This April the U.S. agreed to deliver 42 Harpoons to south Korea. Thatfs why it overlooked its cruise missile development.
    What matters here is the U.S. application of double standards.
    Several countries are either developing missiles or launching them. The U.S. does not care at all whether they are in breach of international convention or not. Yet, it is taking issue with the DPRK only over its missile-launching exercise for self-defence.
    The U.S. imperialists are watching for a chance to attack the DPRK after amassing war means including all types of missiles in and around south Korea. It is quite natural for the DPRK to take counter-measures to cope with this situation.
    What merits a more serious attention is that the U.S. moves spark off a fresh arms race.
    The U.S. has become evermore undisguised in its moves to establish the missile defense system (MD) in the new century since it scrapped the ABM Treaty, a cornerstone of strategic stability.
    U.S. allies are actively joining in the MD. Such situation compels those countries having no missiles or possessing relatively a small number of them to contemplate measures to defend themselves from the U.S. missile threat.
    The U.S. had better stop applying unreasonable double standards and sparking off arms race which escalate military stand-off and danger of a war on the Korean Peninsula.

Installing Equipment in U.S. Firing Range under Fire

    Pyongyang, October 2 (KCNA) -- The south Korean military authorities began installing equipment in the firing range on Jik Islet to be used by the U.S. forces. This is one more pro-U.S. treacherous action as it means selling out the national dignity and interests to the outside forces and zealously backing the U.S. in its moves for a war against the north. A spokesman for the North Headquarters of the Nationwide Special Committee for Probing the Truth behind the GIs' Crimes says this in a statement on Monday.
    It goes on:
    All the U.S. military bases, firing and bomb-dropping ranges and drill grounds in south Korea have been reduced to barren lands after being seriously polluted by poisonous substance. Such actions of the U.S. are a wanton violation of the dignity and sovereignty of the Korean nation and indelible crimes.
    The south Korean military authorities are now perpetrating such acts of treachery as offering land to outside forces as areas for war exercises even in the present June 15 era in which the Koreans are working hard to achieve peace and reunification by their concerted efforts. This brings into bolder relief their sycophantic and traitorous true colors as war servants for the U.S.
    The south Korean people can never escape from misfortune, sufferings and disasters nor can they expect Korea's peace and rosy future of the Korean nation as long as the U.S. imperialist aggressor forces and pro-American sycophantic and traitorous forces remain in south Korea.
    The root cause of these disasters should be eradicated.

Candle-light Rally of Koreans in U.S.

    Pyongyang, October 2 (KCNA) -- A candle-light rally against the expansion of the U.S. military base in Phyongthaek was reportedly held in Manhattan, New York on September 23 under the sponsorship of the "Committee of Koreans in the U.S. for Opposing Neo-Liberalism and Checking the South Korea-U.S. Free Trade Agreement." The candle-light rally took place to express solidarity with the September 24 grand peace march held in Seoul.
    Present at the rally were members of organizations of Koreans in the U.S. and peace-loving Americans.
    Speakers at the rally said that the expansion of the U.S. military base in Phyongthaek was prompted by the U.S. military strategy plan for the "strategic flexibility" of the U.S. forces stationed in south Korea, adding that checking the expansion is an important affair for preventing a war on the Korean Peninsula.
    Denouncing the U.S. ambition for military supremacy, they stressed that together with the south Korean people they would wage a more active struggle against the expansion of the U.S. military base in Phyongthaek.
    Screened at the rally was a video tape showing the south Korean "government's" violent human rights abuses and forcible removal of dwelling houses at the designated place for the expansion of the U.S. military base in Phyongthaek on May 4 and September 13.
    A photo exhibition showing the situation of Phyongthaek was held at the venue.
    Meanwhile, the participants conducted information activities calling for turning out in the struggle against the expansion of the U.S. military base in Phyongthaek.

Vigorous Anti-U.S. Struggle Urged

    Pyongyang, October 2 (KCNA) -- The October Popular Resistance in south Korea was an eruption of the south Korean people's wrath at the U.S. imperialists' military occupation and their policy of colonial enslavement and a patriotic anti-U.S. struggle to achieve the sovereignty and democracy of the nation and the reunification and independence of the country. Rodong Sinmun today observes this in a by-lined article carried sixty years since the outbreak of the popular resistance. The article says:
    People in different parts of south Korea rose in resistance against the brutal colonial fascist rule of the U.S. imperialists as it imposed extremely political non-rights, national misfortune and subhuman life upon them. This resistance developed into an all-people resistance with the struggle of at least 10,000 workers and citizens in Taegu on October 1, 1946 as a momentum.
    The resistance lasted for nearly two months until mid-November with about 2.3 million patriotic people from 73 cities and counties involved despite the U.S. imperialists' barbarous killings.
    The article goes on:
    The desire of the resistance fighters to set up a genuine people's government and lead an independent life in the society free from aggressors and traitors was mercilessly dampened by the U.S. imperialists in the guise of a "liberator" and the streets where they staged actions were drenched in the blood shed by them.
    The U.S. imperialists brutally slaughtered over 25,000 patriotic civilians and their families by mobilizing huge armed forces, but could not quell the south Korean people's indomitable spirit of independence and their patriotic stamina. They offered indomitable resistance defying merciless crackdown and murder. They called for independence, democracy and reunification and asked for revenge before falling victim to the suppression at the point of bayonet.
    Over the past several decades since the October resistance the patriotic people and youth and students in south Korea have waged a ceaseless vigorous patriotic struggle against the U.S. imperialists' policy of military presence and domination, cherishing the desire of the resistance fighters.
    The truth taught by the above-said patriotic people in south Korea sixty years ago is that the U.S. imperialists are an enemy who seeks only to enslave the Korean nation through aggression and domination over Korea and an indomitable anti-U.S. struggle is, therefore, the only way for achieving the independence and democratization of the south Korean society and reunifying the country, concludes the article.

Anniversary of Kim Jong Il's Work Marked

    Pyongyang, October 2 (KCNA) -- Rodong Sinmun Monday dedicates an article to the 11th anniversary of Kim Jong Il's work "The Workers' Party of Korea is the Party of the Great Leader Comrade Kim Il Sung". The work published on October 2, Juche 84 (1995) set out the idea and theory on building the party of Juche, clarified the immortal exploits President Kim Il Sung performed by strengthening and developing the party into an invincible revolutionary party and indicated tasks to be undertaken to glorify the party as the eternal party of the President and ways to do so, the article says, and goes on:
    The work fully reflects the noble sense of moral obligation of Kim Jong Il to perfectly inherit the idea and cause of the President and serves as important guidelines to be held fast to forever in carrying out the cause of building the party of Juche.
    Kim Jong Il explored a new way of building a revolutionary party in the era of Songun with an iron will to develop the party into the party of President Kim Il Sung.
    Kim Jong Il successfully accomplished the cause of perpetuating the memory of President Kim Il Sung, setting a noble example to show how a revolutionary should hold him, the founder of the party, in high esteem. He, at the same time, put up revolutionary slogan "Let us arm ourselves more firmly with the revolutionary ideas of the great leader Comrade Kim Il Sung!" to give steady continuity to the history of the President in this land.
    What is important in his leadership over the work to develop the party into the party of Kim Il Sung is that he developed in depth the Songun idea to make sure that the revolutionary character of the party is invariably preserved and led it to increase its sense of organization and discipline as required by the era of Songun.
    He has led the work to significantly boost the bonds of kinship between the party and people, the article notes, adding that this is another important aspect of his leadership.

    Pyongyang, October 2 (KCNA) -- Kim Yong Nam, president of the Presidium of the DPRK Supreme People's Assembly, Monday sent a message of greetings to Lansana Conte, president of Guinea, on the occasion of the 48th anniversary of its independence. Expressing the belief that the relations of friendship and cooperation between the two countries would favorably develop in the future, the message sincerely wished the president and people of Guinea successes in their work for the stability and prosperity of the country.

Floral Basket to Kim Jong Il from Abbas

    Pyongyang, October 2 (KCNA) -- General Secretary Kim Jong Il was presented with a floral basket by Chief of the Palestinian National Authority Mahmoud Abbas on the occasion of the 61st anniversary of the foundation of the Workers' Party of Korea. Showcase for Economic Development of DPRK

    Pyongyang, October 2 (KCNA) -- Exhibits of the Korean companies were highly appreciated at the Second Pyongyang Autumn International Trade Fair. Catching the eyes of specialists and visitors were major ferrous metal products including the rolled steel and the second- and third-stage processing metal products exhibited by the Songgang Trade Company.
    The Ryonha Machine Trade Company exhibited a NC machine tool.
    The company has made NC machine tools by itself with its own technology, design and material and is exporting them to various countries and regions, So Kyong Thae, vice-director of the company said.
    Drawing the attention of women were various shapes of hard glass vessels, foodstuffs, cosmetics, seasonal shoes and clothes displayed by various units under the Light Industry Trade Company.
    The Pyongyang Evaporation Tool Development Company exhibited several-thousand pieces of various hard alloy tools processed with an advanced CVD technology. Among them were round-shaped and hexagonal drawing dices and the mining hard alloys. It took orders from foreign enterprisers.
    The Chongchun Pharmaceutical Company participated in the exhibition with medicines such as unicolon, tonic for women and others which were made with the native medicinal herbs according to the traditional pharmacopoeia.
    The exhibits from the hi-tech machine units to electronic goods and medicines, which were appreciated at the fair, showed a glimpse of the developing independent national economy of Korea.

Brisk Research for Improving Ecological Environment of River Taedong

    Pyongyang, October 2 (KCNA) -- Activities of research into improving ecological environment of the River Taedong have become brisk in the DPRK. A competent research team was organized at the Land Development Planning Institute under the Ministry of Land and Environment Conservation some time ago. It surveyed the present quality of water and environment at different points of the river and the influence of the surrounding environment on the quality of water, thus making it possible to take measures.
    Projects for developing areas along the river are being conducted extensively, which may decrease water volume of the river. The team confirmed in a scientific way the points to store water needed for changing water.
    In order to prevent water from being polluted by outflow of oil, the survey helps decide properly the positions and sizes of ports to be constructed and dispose industrial waste matters in the areas along the river.
    Also the research team drew a plan for distributing residential quarters in the river basin in the direction of decreasing the amount of sewage flowing into the river as much as possible.
    Besides, research activities to keep the clean environment of the river are being conducted in an extensive way. Such activities include removing the sources of pollutant deposition such as random digging of river beds and afforesting the river basin.

"Grand Bull Prize" Winner

    Pyongyang, October 2 (KCNA) -- The 4th National Korean Wrestling Tournament for "Grand Bull Prize" was closed on Monday amid interest of the people throughout the country. Pak Chun Min from Pyongyang was crowned with the "Grand Bull Prize."
    He met with Ri Jo Won from North Phyongan Province at the final of the individual event without weight distinction held in the afternoon.
    The final match between the two wrestlers, who were physically well prepared and had diverse skills, made the spectators feel a thrill.
    When Pak Chun Min beat down his opponent by making best use of the latter's technique and weak points, the spectators burst forth cheers.
    At the awarding ceremony, he was honored with the grand bull weighing nearly one ton, gold bell, gold medal and diploma.
    Spectators put the floral garland around his neck and presented bouquets to him.
    He expressed thanks to Kim Jong Il who values and encourages the folk traditions.

    Pyongyang, 2 de octubre (ATCC) -- El Sur de Corea acabo de desarrollar misil crucero contra el Norte de Corea. Estados Unidos ampara el desarrollo de tal misil, pero cuestiona el lanzamiento de misiles de la Republica Popular Democratica de Corea, lo que es la pauta de doble rasero y revelacion de la ambicion de agresion a Corea.
    Senala asi el rotativo Rodong Sinmun en un comentario individual del dia 2 y prosigue:
    EE.UU. intenta poner al ejercito surcoreano en la primera linea para agredir al Norte en el "tiempo de emergencia" de la Peninsula Coreana. Partiendo de esta finalidad, en abril del ano en curso el imperio se comprometio a ofrecer 42 unidades de misil Harpoon al Sur de Corea y tolero el desarrollo de misil crucero del Sur de Corea.
    La cuestion es la aplicacion de la pauta de doble rasero por EE.UU.
    Este imperio no se mete en el desarrollo y lanzamiento de misiles de varios paises del mundo, que se contravengan o no a la convencion internacional, pero acusa solo a la RPDC de sus ejercicios de lanzamiento de misil con fin autodefensivo.
    EE.UU. emplazo misiles de distintas misiones y colosal suma de equipos de guerra en el Sur de Corea y su contorno para agredir a la RPDC, que a su vez, se ve obligada a tomar las contramedidas.
    Lo mas grave es que tal accion de EE.UU. acarrea nueva carrera armamentista.
    Al entrar en el nuevo siglo, EE.UU. anulo el Tratado sobre Misiles Antibalisticos (TMAB), que sirvio de base para la estabilidad estrategica, y ahora se aferra abiertamente al establecimiento del sistema antimisiles. Se le incorporan los paises entreguistas. En esta circunstancia, los paises desprovistos de misiles o provistos de poca cantidad de estos se ven obligados a tomar medidas de autodefensa para hacer frente a la amenaza de misiles de EE.UU.
    Este pais debe abandonar ahora mismo la injusta aplicacion de la pauta de doble rasero y las maquinaciones de carrera armamentista que agravan la confrontacion militar y el peligro de guerra.

    Pyongyang, 2 de octubre (ATCC) -- Los periodicos capitalinos insertaron en sus numeros del dia primero editoriales dedicados al 60o aniversario de la fundacion de la Universidad Kim Il Sung. El editorial del periodico Rodong Sinmun senala:
    Este plantel es la primera universidad autentica del pueblo en Corea y la institucion socialista del Juche que lleva el nombre del Presidente Kim Il Sung, eterno Sol de la patria y la nacion.
    Es el centro supremo de la educacion del Juche en que estan impregnadas las huellas de las inmortales actividades revolucionarias del Dirigente Kim Jong Il y que bajo la direccion de este lanza su brillo a todo el mundo.
    Durante estos 60 anos, la universidad ha recorrido por el glorioso y mas brillante camino de su desarrollo teniendo por generoso maestro y padre al gran lider y al gran Dirigente y ha logrado exitos practicos de la educacion y la formacion del personal revolucionario que contribuye grandemente a la prosperidad de la patria socialista.

    Pyongyang, 2 de octubre (ATCC) -- Gozaron de gran reputacion los articulos de companias de la Republica Popular Democratica de Corea en la segunda edicion de la Exposicion Internacional de Mercancias Otonal de Pyongyang. Los articulos de metales ferrosos, en particular, los materiales de acero laminados y productos metalicos de segunda y tercera elaboracion exhibidos por la Compania Comercial Songgang atrajeron atencion de los especialistas y visitantes por su gran utilidad.
    La Compania Comercial de Maquinaria Ryonha exhibio las maquinas herramientas de manejo numerico.
    El subdirector de la compania So Kyong Thae dijo que las produce a base de las tecnicas, disenos y materiales propios y las exporta a varios paises y regiones.
    Tambien ganaron gran popularidad de las mujeres los articulos expuestos por varias unidades de la Compania Comercial de Industria Ligera, entre otros, las vasijas vidrieras duras, comestibles, cosmeticos, vestidos y calzados segun las estaciones.
    La Compania de Desarrollo de Herramientas Revestidas de Pyongyang expuso herramientas de aleacion dura de miles de generos que introdujo la avanzada tecnica de revestimiento CVD. El fragmento de corte prefabricado de revestimiento quimico para el torno CNC, dados de roscar estirados de forma redonda o hexagonal, productos de aleacion dura para minas fueron objetos de pedido y contrato de los empresarios extranjeros.
    La Compania Farmaceutica Chongchun expuso medicinas tradicionales y modernas entre otras, unicolon y fortificante para mujeres.
    Las maquinas y equipos sofisticados, aparatos electronicos, medicinas y otros de gran reputacion demostraron una parte del desarrollo de la economia nacional autosostenida de Corea.
