He hoped that the Korean people would achieve good successes in all domains, in the future, too under the wise leadership of Kim Jong Il.

Secretary of WPK C.C. Supports Joint Statement of DPRK Political Parties, Government and Organizations

Pyongyang, January 21 (KCNA) -- Kim Ki Nam, secretary of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea, in a statement on Jan. 20 fully supported and approved the joint statement released by the political parties, government and organizations of the DPRK, recognizing that the statement is the most just and patriotic appeal indicating the path of a sacred struggle to achieve earlier the national reunification, the supreme task facing the nation at present. Kim in the statement called on all the Koreans at home and abroad to firmly maintain the stand of attaching importance to the nation under the uplifted banner of "By our nation itself", defend the peace of the country while resolutely foiling the war moves on the part of the U.S. and the south Korean warhawks and advance the trend of the June 15 era of independent reunification through the unity of the entire nation.
The south Korean authorities should refrain from such shameless acts as participating in the sanctions against their fellow countrymen, pursuant to the outsiders' policy and take due measures to bring the north-south relations to normal and opt for reconciliation, cooperation and reunification, he said, and continued:
The south Korean political parties and organizations should resolutely reject and oppose any act of damaging the dignity and interests of the nation and hamstringing the efforts for the development of the inter-Korean relations.
All the Koreans in the north and the south and abroad should turn out as one in the struggle to foil the U.S. anti-DPRK nuclear racket and war moves and pull back the U.S. forces, the root cause of misfortune, pain and disaster, from south Korea.
The south Korean authorities should stop the arms buildup and joint military exercises targeted against their fellow countrymen and refrain from doing anything to escalate the stand-off and tension between the north and the south, as servants for the U.S. in its hostile policy toward the DPRK.
The political parties and organizations in the north and the south should achieve solidarity and unity under the banner of patriotism, not asserting their own isms and partisan interests and strategy.
The political parties, organizations and people of all social standings in south Korea desirous of the peace and reunification of the country should heighten vigilance against the conservative forces' moves to seize "power" while pursuing confrontation and war, going against the trend of the June 15 era of reunification, and should never allow them to do so. They should realize a great alliance against conservatism to resolutely foil the last-ditch efforts of the pro-U.S. anti-reunification traitorous forces to return to power and throw them overboard.
All the Koreans should fully support and defend the historic June 15 joint declaration, a landmark for independent reunification in the new century, and categorically reject the outsiders and their followers' moves to stem the trend of the era of "By our nation itself."
The Koreans should fully support and uphold the Songun policy, lifeline of the nation, as they value national dignity and sovereignty and desire peace and reunification of the country.
The statement expressed the expectation that the political parties and politicians in south Korea and all other Koreans would positively respond to the patriotic appeal made by the DPRK to glorify the June 15 era of reunification by attaching importance to the nation, defending peace and achieving unity.

First Friday Meeting Held in S. Korea Denounces GNP

Pyongyang, January 21 (KCNA) -- The first Friday meeting for denouncing the Grand National Party of south Korea (GNP) was reportedly held on Jan. 12 by the Pusan Solidarity for Implementing the South-North Joint Declaration, the Pusan and South Kyongsang Provincial Federation of the National Alliance for the Country's Reunification, the Young Friends in the Era of Reunification and the Pusan and South Kyongsang Provincial Federation of University Student Councils. Speakers at the meeting referred to the fact that the GNP described the distorted history textbook published by neo-conservative forces last year as "an advance of history." "The GNP is a political party not entitled to say even a word about history as it has been engrossed in war agitation, irregularities and corruption and sex scandals by inheriting the lifeline of military dictatorship", they said.
Recalling that the floor leader of the GNP recently let loose reckless remarks slandering the June 15 joint declaration, they assailed Jon Ryo Ok, lawmaker from the same party, for crying out for eliminating the civic organizations, the National Teachers' Trade Union of south Korea and labor organizations.
Branding the GNP dreaming of building a society dominated by the conservative forces by blocking progress and reforms as a sycophantic treacherous group keen to incite confrontation among fellow countrymen and drive the people's living to destitution, the speakers called upon all the people to turn out in the struggle for completely eliminating the GNP in order to keep those forces from staying any longer in the political arena.

Anti-U.S. Solidarity Rally Held in Seoul

Pyongyang, January 21 (KCNA) -- The 88th anti-U.S. solidarity rally was reportedly held in a citizens' park in Kwanghwamun in Seoul on Jan. 16. The speakers at a rally termed the deployment of F-117 Stealth fighter bombers and at least 300 support personnel in a U.S. air force base in south Korea on Jan. 11 as part of the preparations for a preemptive attack on the north.
They accused the U.S. of letting a wing of Stealth fighter bombers participate in RSOI slated to take place in March in south Korea.
The commander of the U.S. forces in south Korea claimed that the projected joint military exercises are not of provocative nature as they are aimed at examining their combat readiness but it is well known that they are designed to mount a preemptive attack on the north, they contended.
A letter of protest read out at a rally disclosed that all the anti-north war moves are pursuant to the U.S. unilateral military strategy, strongly urging the U.S. to immediately withdraw the Stealth fighter bombers.

Great Alliance against Conservatism Called for in S. Korea

Pyongyang, January 21 (KCNA) -- The South Headquarters of the National Alliance of Youth and Students for the Country's Reunification reportedly issued a statement on Jan. 15, 20 years since Pak Jong Chol was tortured to death. Pak's death sparked off the June resistance for democracy, the statement said, noting that his righteous protest powerfully encouraged the pro-democracy people in their efforts to achieve an all-people alliance and set the stage for developing the resistance into a nationwide joint struggle against the military dictatorship.
If the Grand National Party is allowed to seize power again, it will force more people to meet the same tragic death as Pak Jong Chol's and the whole nation suffer a war disaster, much less achieving reunification, the statement warned.
The South Headquarters will take the lead in the struggle to achieve the great alliance against conservatism in order to foil the GNP's attempt to seize power and bring about genuine democracy, progressive reforms and independent reunification to this land, the statement noted.

The statement noted that last year the DPRK had access to a nuclear deterrent for self-defence, thus providing a firm guarantee for defending its sovereignty and ensuring peace and security in Northeast Asia, adding this helped the Korean people bring about a great advance in accomplishing their cause of national reunification.
We are of the view that the call of the joint New Year editorial for achieving the unity of the whole Korean nation serves as a means of its existence and as a driving force for achieving reunification, it said.

Prosecution Authorities' Human Rights Abuses Flailed in S. Korea

Pyongyang, January 20 (KCNA) -- Members of civic and public organizations including the Reunification Solidarity and the South Headquarters of the National Alliance for the Country's Reunification and the People for Achieving Peace and Reunification reportedly held a press conference in front of the Supreme Public Prosecutors Office in Seoul on Jan. 11 to denounce the prosecution authorities' human rights abuses. Kwon O Chang, permanent co-representative of the Solidarity for Implementing the South-North Joint Declaration, Ri Kyu Jae, chairman of the South Headquarters of the National Alliance for the Country's Reunification, and other speakers recalled at the press conference that the prosecution authorities arrested and took an action against Kang Sun Jong, adviser to the Reunification Solidarity, on spy charges on Jan. 9, branding this as human rights abuses crudely violating democracy. The anti-democratic "National Security Law" (NSL) is being enforced more desperately although the nation lives in the June 15 era for reunification, they deplored, slamming the prosecution authorities for working hard to cook up sheer lies in collaboration with the conservative forces.
A press release read out there described the charges brought against Kang Sun Jong as desperate moves of the conservative forces to reinforce the NSL, which has no justification to remain in force any longer, in a bid to prolong their remaining days.
The press release strongly urged the "government" to repeal the NSL and immediately release Kang Sun Jong.

Pullback of U.S. Forces from S. Korea Urged

Pyongyang, January 20 (KCNA) -- The Youth and Student Solidarity to Implement the June 15 Joint Declaration was reported to have issued a statement on Jan. 15 in which it demanded the immediate withdrawal of the U.S. forces from south Korea. Referring to the sexual assault against a south Korean woman by a GI in south Korea on Jan. 14, the statement said that the command of the 8th U.S. Army in south Korea orchestrated such hypocritical farce as "making an apology" as there was a sign of growing anti-Americanism among people of all social standings.
GIs' crimes will never cease in south Korea so long as the shackling south Korea-U.S. "Status of Forces Agreement" (SOFA) remains in force, the statement said, and continued:
The solidarity strongly demands the GI criminal be punished by a local law, not according to the SOFA.
The SOFA should be repealed at once as it shields and protects GI criminals.
The U.S. forces in south Korea, a group of criminals, murderers and warmongers, quit this land at once.

Japan Urged to Halt Moves for Reexamining Statement Made Concerning Sexual Slavery

Pyongyang, January 20 (KCNA) -- The "League of Dietmen Thinking of Japan's Prospect and Education in History" of the Liberal Democratic Party of Japan recently announced that it would reexamine the "statement" issued in 1993 by former Chief Cabinet Secretary Kono over the crimes related to the "comfort women" for the imperial Japanese army. A spokesman for the DPRK Measure Committee for Demanding Compensation to Comfort Women for the Japanese Army and the Victims of Forcible Drafting said in a statement Saturday in this regard: As far as the "statement" is concerned, it meant that the Japanese government officially admitted the involvement of the Japanese military in the crimes and the use of force in perpetrating them, expressing feelings of apology and repentance of them.
This being a hard fact, the reactionaries of the land of Japs are now busy setting up a sub-committee and inviting those concerned to issue statements, raising questions about the admittance to the crimes, though insufficient, to the public's surprise, the statement said, and went on:
What should not be overlooked is that both Shimomura, deputy chief Cabinet secretary, and Nakayama, chairman of the "league" who took the lead in crying out for the reexamination of the issue are the ultra-right politicians. Greatly displeased with any behavior admitting to the sexual slavery for the imperial Japanese army, they let loose such reckless remarks as raving that "it is good to see less references to 'comfort women' for the army and forcible drafting in the history textbooks" and "it is not appropriate to use expression of 'comfort women,'" sparking off public criticism.
It is as clear as noonday that the reexamination touted by the "league" dominated by such guys is intended to evade the responsibility for the crimes and downplay or deny their unethical nature.
By denying one by one the crimes committed by Japan in the past and making profound confusing of right and wrong these reactionaries seek to evade their responsibility for redressing the crime-woven past come what may and push forward, unhindered, the moves to turn it into a military power in a bid to realize overseas expansion.
Japan had better give up at once its foolish and reckless charade for reexamining the issue and make an immediate apology and compensation to the victims.

All-People Rally for Checking Conclusion of FTA Held in S. Korea

Pyongyang, January 20 (KCNA) -- An all-people rally for checking the conclusion of the south Korea-U.S. FTA was reportedly held in Seoul on Jan. 16 with an attendance of at least 5,500 people from all walks of life. A resolution read out at the rally noted that the U.S. arrogant negotiating attitude can never change and the people would surely check the conclusion of FTA.
At the end of the rally the participants marched as far as the venue of the negotiations before holding a meeting.
On the same day, the Democratic Labour Party of south Korea held a meeting in Seoul to vow to check the conclusion of FTA.
A resolution was read out at the meeting. It declared that the party would check the conclusion of FTA to make 2007 a year of protecting the existence and future of the people and a year of victory of the working people.
Meanwhile, a prayer meeting for checking the conclusion of FTA was held near the venue of the negotiations under the sponsorship of religious organizations.

Extraordinary Meeting of 15th-term Hanchongryon Held

Pyongyang, January 20 (KCNA) -- A meeting of the extraordinary central committee of the 15th-term Hanchongryon (south Korean Federation of University Student Councils) was reportedly held at Hongik University in Seoul on Jan. 9. Present at the meeting were deputies to Hanchongryon including its 14th-term chairman.
The meeting decided to hold the regular meeting of deputies to the 15th-term Hanchongryon between February 10 and 11.
A special resolution for building the 15th-term Hanchongryon was read out at the meeting.
The resolution stressed the need to conduct the movement for sincerely implementing the June 15 joint declaration, a campaign for leading the "presidential elections" to victory of the people and a joint solidarity struggle to convert neo-liberal education into genuine education.
Also, a resolution on the struggle against the U.S. and war and the Grand National Party of south Korea was read out.
Hanchongryon will continue the struggle to drive the U.S. aggressor troops out of south Korea to the last man and get the GNP completely dissolved, it declared.

U.S. Imperialists Urged to Drop Their Scenario for Preemptive Nuclear Attack on DPRK

Pyongyang, January 20 (KCNA) -- The U.S. imperialists recently transferred a wing of F-117 Stealth fighter bombers which includes 15-24 bombers and more than 300 support personnel to south Korea from the U.S. mainland. It is said that this "devilish war hardware" remains there for over four months for the purpose of acquiring the operational capacity under the climatic conditions on the Korean Peninsula and take part in the large-scale U.S.-south Korea joint military maneuvers slated to take place in spring. Rodong Sinmun Saturday observes in a signed commentary in this regard:
This is a clear proof that the U.S. imperialists are busy preparing a war against the DPRK behind the scene of the six-party talks as the above-said arms buildup is a reckless military move challenging the desire and will of all the Koreans and the world progressives aspiring after peace and security on the Korean Peninsula.
    The commentary goes on:
The U.S. imperialist warmongers claim that their introduction of the ill-famed fighter bombers into south Korea is "part of the ordinary exercises" and "routine rotating deployment" but this is nothing but an artifice to cover up their dangerous scenario.
The present relations between the DPRK and the U.S. and the resultant tense situation prevailing on the Korean Peninsula require them to make options helpful to the solution to the issue. Unilateral and provocative actions would do both nothing good but deteriorate the situation. However, the U.S. is contemplating largest-ever military exercises targeted against the DPRK by mobilizing Stealth fighter bombers, while disturbing the peaceful settlement of the nuclear issue between the two sides under an unreasonable pretext. It is clear to everybody that this is a revelation of the U.S. sinister intention to torpedo the six-party talks and do harm to the DPRK through preemptive attacks on it.
The U.S would be well advised to face up to the reality. It had better pull at once war hardware including F-117 Stealth fighter bombers out of south Korea, halt its reckless war moves against the DPRK and withdraw its aggression forces from south Korea as early as possible.

History of Fascist Dictatorship Should Not Be Allowed to Repeat Itself in S. Korea

Pyongyang, January 20 (KCNA) -- The blood-stained history of fascist dictatorship should never be allowed to repeat itself in south Korea, urges Rodong Sinmun Saturday in a signed commentary 20 years since Pak Jong Chol, student of Seoul National University in south Korea, was brutally tortured to death under the military fascist dictatorship. The murder of Pak was a typical case proving the barbaric nature of the fascist rule and "torture policy" of the Chun Doo Hwan-led military dictatorial junta, the commentary notes, and goes on:
Pak breathed his last due to water and electric shock torture in an anti-communist section of the public peace headquarters. He was a direct and typical victim to the cruel torture which provided clear evidence proving the man-killing and suppressive rule of the dictatorial fifth republic.
The man-killers should stand a stern trial of history and people. However, those savage murderers are still at large though they stayed in power by dint of torture and slaughter during the military dictatorial rule in south Korea.
There are still remnants of the military dictatorship of the "fifth republic" among the heavyweights of the Grand National Party of south Korea. They are making desperate efforts to win the "elections" slated to take place this year by calling back the departed soul of the fascist dictators in the past who killed many youths and students including Pak. If they are allowed to return to power, the youths and students and all other people of south Korea will never be able to escape the same fate as Pak's in the barren land under the dark fascist rule, much less achieving national reunification.

Memorial Service for Pak Jong Chol Held in S. Korea

Pyongyang, January 20 (KCNA) -- A memorial service for Pak Jong Chol, a student of Seoul National University, was reportedly held in south Korea on Jan. 14, 20 years since he was tortured to death. Present there were members of the Solidarity Council of Organizations to Honor the Memory of Martyrs for the Nation and Democracy, Chairman of the Democratic Labor Party Mun Song Hyon, Senior Vice-Chairman of the Advisory Council for Democracy and Peaceful Reunification Kim Sang Gun and members of the bereaved families, more than 300 in all.
Pak Jong Gi, father of Pak Jong Chol, in a speech at the service gave vent to his indignation, saying that his son was cruelly tortured to death at the "Anti-Communist Section" in Seoul on Jan. 14, 1987. People's cry for independence, democracy and reunification made after the death of his son is still heard, he added.
Pak Jung Gi, chairman of the solidarity council, in a memorial address called upon all the people to join efforts in the struggle to realize the desire of Pak Jong Chol to build in south Korea a society where the popular masses are masters and genuine democracy is ensured.
After the service the participants looked around the place where Pak was slaughtered.

Pyongyang, January 20 (KCNA) -- The Mansudae Art Troupe gives New Year performances before a capacity audience at the reconstructed East Pyongyang Grand Theatre. The audience with a great excitement goes round the theatre which was renovated in a formative and artistic way to meet the need of the new century.
The theatre, covering more than 62,000 square meters, has all necessary facilities for the cultural life of the working people.
The ecstasy of the central hall adds grace to the theatre.
There are in the hall columns with grandeur and formative beauty, a mural depicting the splendid Ulrim Falls and chandeliers shining brightly in various colors.
Sculptures of the women's instrumental ensemble and dance "Snow Falls" of the Mansudae Art Troupe, and the various decorative patterns of balconies and walls on the second and third floors lead the viewers deep into an art world.
Perfect are the harp-shaped walls of the seating hall, the stage and latest lighting and sound facilities.
Director of the Mansudae Art Troupe Pak Ho Jun said that even foreigners marvel at the theatre, expressing his determination to create more and more song and dance pieces loved by the people with a pride of giving performance in a theatre with all conditions for the cultural and emotional life and thus to make a positive contribution to the development of the Songun culture.

Kim Jong Il Gives Field Guidance to Newly Built Thaechon Youth Power Station No. 4

Pyongyang, January 21 (KCNA) -- General Secretary Kim Jong Il gave field guidance to the newly built Thaechon Youth Power Station No. 4. After being briefed on the construction of the power station before a huge painting showing its panoramic view, he went round its exterior and interior to acquaint himself in detail with its construction and electricity production.
Making the rounds of the gigantic dam that has appeared across the wide River Taeryong, a large man-made lake, a generator room and a power distribution room, he was greatly satisfied to learn that the builders have successfully built a great structure to be handed to posterity.
He said that this astonishing miracle is a striking demonstration of the might of the unbreakable unity and cohesion of the army and the people of the DPRK who formed a harmonious whole with the Party and the leader and the tremendous potential of the independent national economy and one more great victory won by the Korean people in their struggle to valiantly shatter the moves of the imperialists to isolate and stifle the DPRK and add brilliance to Korean-style socialism centred on the popular masses.
He heard a lot of beautiful stories told about young people in the course of the construction, while looking at a collection of works created by members of the youth shock brigade titled "The River Taeryong Tells."
The monumental edifices of eternal value in the country are associated with the precious blood and sweat of the young people in the era of the Workers' Party, he noted, adding that the cause of the Korean revolution pioneered by the forerunners is given steady continuity as the large contingent of the youngsters, the most viable combat unit, is playing a leading role in the defence of the country and socialist construction.
He put forward the tasks to be tackled to boost the nation's electricity production, saying that it is one of the most important issues in making a leaping advance in the national economy to give definite precedence to the electricity production.
Building hydro-power stations on a large scale is the short cut to satisfactorily meeting the growing need for electricity in the country which has many rivers and streams rich in water resources, he said, stressing the need to continue focusing efforts on this in the future, too.
In order to keep the electricity production going at a high rate now that many power stations have sprung up in different parts of the country in recent years, it is necessary to steadily improve the management of the equipment and technological control and, at the same time, widely introduce advanced technology, he noted.
Saying that it is important to put an end to the waste of electricity while increasing the electricity production, he underlined the need to raise the efficiency of the power transmission system and do away with the loss of electricity in transmission.
He called upon the officials in the field of power industry to minutely organize economic work, bearing deep in mind the heavy responsibility they should fulfil to build an economic power, and thus decisively settle the acute problem of electricity.
He was accompanied by Kim Phyong Hae, chief secretary of the North Phyongan Provincial Committee of the WPK, and Pak Nam Gi, department director of the C.C., WPK.
