Guinness Certificate Awarded to "Arirang"
Pyongyang, August 16 (KCNA) -- A certificate of the Guinness World Records was awarded to the grand gymnastic and artistic performance "Arirang".
It was handed to Song Sok Hwan, vice-minister of Culture, by Wu Xiaohong, representative of the Guinness World Records Ltd., on a visit to the DPRK at the May Day Stadium on August 15.
The record of largest gymnastic and artistic performance in the world was created in Pyongyang, the capital of the DPRK, the certificate says.
Conveying the certificate, the representative said the grand gymnastic and artistic performance "Arirang" could be successfully created thanks to the wise leadership of Kim Jong Il, and expressed deepest respect to him.
Warmly haling the registration of the performance in the Guinness World Records, the representative hoped that "Arirang" would successfully go on in the future.
More than 7 million Koreans in the north and the south and overseas and foreigners have watched the performance which has taken place over 180 times.
Extravaganza "Arirang" Praised
Pyongyang, August 16 (KCNA) -- The grand gymnastic and artistic performance "Arirang" participated in by 100,000 persons is the most successful work both in its scale and ideological and artistic value.
Wu Xiaohong, representative of the Guinness World Records Ltd. on a visit to the DPRK, said this after appreciating the performance now going on in Pyongyang with great success.
I have never seen such peculiar work as the grand gymnastic and artistic performance "Arirang" in any other countries, she said, and went on:
What impressed me very much is that it is fantastic and conspicuous.
I marveled at the might of the unity of the Korean people while watching the performance.
It is my view that such extravaganza can be created only in the DPRK wisely led by Kim Jong Il.
It is something worth boasting before the world that such peculiar performance is going on in the DPRK.
The Guinness World Records Ltd. recognized the grand gymnastic and artistic performance "Arirang" going on at the May Day Stadium in Pyongyang, the capital of the DPRK, as the largest one in the world.
The Guinness Book of World Records published by the company is distributed to at least 100 countries.
I would like to express my sincere thanks to the Korean people for having created "Arirang" as a great masterpiece of the world.
It is my hope that the performance will prove successful in the future, too.
Japan's Apology and Compensation for Past Crimes Demanded
Pyongyang, August 16 (KCNA) -- The North Side Committee, South Side Committee and Overseas Side Committee for Implementing the June 15 Joint Declaration (All Korean Committee for the Implementation of June 15 Joint Declaration) released a joint resolution denouncing Japan on August 15, the 62nd anniversary of Korea's liberation.
The resolution noted that the authorities of Japan which committed irretrievable inhumane crimes against the Korean nation have never made an apology and compensation for the past crimes until now, though 62 years have lapsed since the defeat of the Japanese imperialists, and are denying the fact about the "comfort women" forcibly recruited for the Imperial Japanese Army while getting hysteric again in its crackdown on the General Association of Korean Residents in Japan (Chongryon).
Noting that the Japanese authorities are openly revealing militarist ambition while reinforcing the "Self-Defense Forces" into regular forces and building up arms, the resolution said this is an anti-historical act threatening peace in Northeast Asia again as a war criminal state of the Second World War.
The resolution stated:
1. We strongly demand that the Japanese authorities promptly retract their hostile policy toward Chongryon and the Koreans in Japan in keeping with the prevailing situation in which Northeast Asian peace and stability are being promoted after the six-party talks and measures agreed upon on February 13 and we will struggle toward this end.
2. We will make all possible efforts to have the Japanese authorities apologize and compensate for the past history of the Japanese imperialists' aggression and legally guarantee the main human rights of the Korean residents in Japan and their national activities.
3. All the Koreans in north and the south and overseas will vigorously wage diverse forms of movement and international solidarity activities to denounce the Japanese authorities' repression of the Korean residents in Japan.
The All Korean Committee for the Implementation of June 15 Joint Declaration will vehemently struggle in solidarity with humankind worldwide who defend human rights and love peace, representing the desire of all the 70 million Koreans until the day when the Japanese authorities apologize for and settle the crimes committed against the Korean nation.

Damage by Flood Increased in DPRK
Pyongyang, August 16 (KCNA) -- Flood-damage is further increasing in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
The continued heavy rainfalls across the country have done a huge damage to people's living and the national economy.
As of August 14, more than 46,580 houses for over 88,400 families have been destroyed totally or partially and flooded in Pyongyang, North and South Hwanghae provinces, North and South Phyongan provinces and Kangwon and South Hamgyong provinces, leaving over 300,000 flood-victims.
More than 11 percent of paddy and dry fields throughout the country were inundated, buried or washed away, some 55,000 square meters of railway roadbeds were carried away and over 400 industrial establishments were submerged under water.
In Pyongyang, the water level of the Taedong and Pothong Rivers went up highest since 1967, submerging Panwol and Turu Islets and some areas of Pothonggang, Phyongchon and Songyo districts, paralyzing the traffics and inundating, washing away or burying over 8,200 hectares of paddy and dry fields.
The precipitations in North Hwanghae and South Phyongan provinces in seven days were nearly equivalent to the annual ones. The torrential rains destroyed totally or partially and submerged some 25,000 dwelling houses and washed away 63,000 hectares of paddy and dry fields. And they destroyed railways, roads, bridges and river banks and cut electric power and communication networks, thus causing huge amount of material losses.
In Kangwon Province, several thousand hectares of farm land were carried away and more than 27,700 dwelling houses were wrecked or inundated.
In South Hwanghae Province, a granary on the west coast, the heavy rainfalls coupled with strong wind did damage to at least 20,000 hectares of farm land and destroyed dwelling houses and public buildings.
Over twenty coal mines across the country including the coal mines in the Kaechon area were flooded. Some 60 pits were collapsed or inundated and 70 cutting faces and 400 facilities were under water in Jungsan, Unpha, Sudong and other mines.
In the field of railway transportation, over hundred sections of railway roadbeds were cut, 280 meter-long railway bridge beams were destroyed, three tunnels were flooded and 49 sections of railroad were buried by 14,300 cubic meters of earth triggered off by landslides. The disaster has suspended railway transportation.
Flood damage is now under investigation.
Pyongyang Hit by Flood
Pyongyang, August 16 (KCNA) -- Pyongyang City was damaged by an unprecedented flood.
Heavy rains fell in Pyongyang from August 7 to 11. Their precipitation is 224 mm higher than that in the period from August 25 to 29, 1967.
The water level of the River Taedong went up rapidly by the week-long rainfalls. 13,650 cubic meters of water per second flew in the River Taedong at 21:00 on August 11. Its water level reached the dangerous line.
On top of this, the highest tide of the West Sea of Korea brought difficulties to manage the water of the river.
It resulted in hitting low-lying areas of the city and its suburbs.
Some streets of Pothonggang, Mangyongdae, Phyongchon and Central districts were submerged under two meters of water, suspending traffics and breaking the supply of electricity and communication networks.
The beautiful parks in Panwol, Ssuk, Konyu and other islets and on the sides of river were buried under silt beyond recognition.
According to the figures available, the flood claimed lives of several people, inundated dwelling houses for over 6,400 families, 300 public and production buildings and nearly 30 underground cross-roads and destroyed 240 sections of roads covering 23,000 square meters.
At least 8,200 hectares of paddy and dry fields were flooded, buried or carried away and 30-odd pumping stations, 80 sections of waterways and 30 sections of river-dykes were destroyed and scores of water pumps were spoiled.
Some 2,300 hectares of farm land were damaged by the flood in Kangnam County and Turu Islet of Rakrang District, one of vegetable production bases for the city, was submerged.
Anniversary of Korea's Liberation Observed Abroad
Pyongyang, August 16 (KCNA) -- The British Association for the Study of Songun Policy posted on its Internet homepage a special write-up inter-woven with the portrait of smiling President Kim Il Sung and photos showing his revolutionary activities on August 9 on the occasion of the 62nd anniversary of Korea's liberation.
The homepage in an article titled "President Kim Il Sung, Peerless Patriot" said that the Korean nation, subject to colonial slavery after their country was usurped by the Japanese imperialists, greeted a new spring of liberation on August 15, 1945.
It was none other than Kim Il Sung who saved the country and brought the resurrection of the Korean nation at a time when Korea was in the danger of being eclipsed on the world map for good, the article noted, and continued:
Kim Il Sung, who embarked upon the road of revolution in his teens with the firm resolution not to come back to Korea before it became independent, fought bloody battles against the Japanese imperialists, experiencing all trials and difficulties in the cold wind-swept deep forest of Mt. Paektu for 20 years, and thus finally achieved the historic cause of Korea's liberation.
Korea's liberation which marked an event to be specially recorded in history as it brought about a new turning point in national rebirth and a historic event which heralded the advent of the new era was the precious fruition of the Songun leadership of Kim Il Sung, the great hero of the nation.
Referring in detail to the fact that the reverence for the President who brought about a spring of liberation grew stronger among the south Korean people on the occasion of August 15, the homepage said he always lives in the hearts of the Koreans as the liberator of the nation, peerless patriot and great sun.
Anniversary of Korea's Liberation Marked by Foreign Crewmen
Haeju, August 15 (KCNA) -- A meeting of crewmen of a Panamanian-flagged ship took place at Haeju Port on August 13 to mark the 62nd anniversary of Korea's liberation.
It was attended by the captain and the crewmen of the ship.
Speakers at the meeting said that President Kim Il Sung liberated Korea by leading the arduous anti-Japanese revolutionary struggle to victory and built a socialist power independent in politics, self-supporting in economy and self-reliant in national defence.
Kim Jong Il, faithful successor to the revolutionary cause of Kim Il Sung, has wisely led the DPRK people, they noted, and continued:
Kim Jong Il is leading the Korean revolution to victory even under the grave and complicated situation.
A congratulatory letter to Kim Jong Il was adopted at the meeting.
At the end of the meeting, its participants watched the Korean documentary film "For the Liberation of the Country".
Prior to the meeting, they laid a floral basket before the statue of Kim Il Sung in Haeju City before paying tribute to him.
Stop to War Exercises and Withdrawal of U.S. Forces Demanded in S. Korea
Pyongyang, August 16 (KCNA) -- A rally reportedly took place near the U.S. embassy in Seoul on August 11 in demand of the cancellation of the plan for the "Ulji Focus Lens" war exercises to threaten peace on the Korean Peninsula, the conclusion of a peace agreement and the withdrawal of the U.S. forces from south Korea.
Present there were members of "2007 students' group of Seoul area for independent reunification" and the group for a grand march for "beautiful Seoul without the U.S. troops."
Speakers at the rally recalled that they had strenuously staged the movement for the withdrawal of the U.S. forces including the "grand cycling march," "street cultural festival" and an exhibition of anti-U.S. literature.
They called on the people to unite and wage a more dynamic movement against the U.S. and war and for the withdrawal of the U.S. forces and get the south Korea-U.S. "alliance," the source of all evils, scrapped and drive the U.S. forces out of south Korea without fail.
U.S. Accused of Proliferating WMD
Pyongyang, August 16 (KCNA) -- The United States recently said that it would sell modern military hardware including guided missile system, war planes and warships to Mideast countries. Commenting on this, Rodong Sinmun Thursday observes that this proves the U.S. is chiefly to blame for disturbing peace in Mideast and proliferating weapons of mass destruction there.
It goes on:
The U.S. is pretending to be concerned for the regional peace, talking about the convocation of an "international conference for Mideast peace" and the like. But its real intention behind the curtain of "Mideast peace" is to bring profits to its munitions monopolies, split and alienate Arab countries and thus isolate anti-U.S. countries and establish an unchallenged domination over the regions rich in oil resources.
The U.S. plan for huge weapon sale to Mideast countries is, in a nutshell, aimed at deterring Iran and Syria advancing along the road of independence against the U.S. from exerting influence upon other countries.
The above-said U.S. plan is a dangerous act as it fosters division and arms race among Mideast countries and disturbs regional peace and stability.
It is as clear as noonday that the U.S. implementation of the plan would accelerate the arms race in the region and aggravate the conflict between Sunni and Shiite forces and render the regional situation more complicated.
The U.S. is talking a lot about "peace" in public, while working hard to beef up its armed forces behind the scene. This double-dealing tactics of the U.S. convince the Korean people of the justice of the DPRK's principled stand that "the principle of action for action" should be observed in the DPRK-U.S. relations.
The U.S. is sadly mistaken if it calculates it can achieve its sinister political aim through such huge weapon sale to Mideast.
Treacherous Nature of GNP Exposed
Pyongyang, August 16 (KCNA) -- The Grand National Party of south Korea recently published what it called "a commentary of its spokesman" to the effect that the "Ulji Focus Lens" joint military exercises "should not be downsized or postponed".
Commenting on this, a Minju Joson analyst Thursday says this is a sophism which can be uttered only by traitors who are seeking a way out in confrontation with fellow countrymen with the backing of the United States.
The analyst goes on:
It is a publicly recognized fact that whenever the above-said military exercises took place, the situation on the Korean Peninsula was pushed to the touch-and-go danger line, the DPRK-U.S. relations got worse and inter-Korean relations on the way of improvement underwent turns and twists.
To put it in a nutshell, the "Ulji Focus Lens" is a war gamble harmful to peace and reunification of Korea, to the DPRK-U.S. and inter-Korean relations and to world peace and security.
Nevertheless, the GNP is desperately insisting on the joint military exercises. This is an unpardonable criminal act to turn the flow of the times toward national reconciliation and unity, peace and reunification back to the pre-June 15 state of confrontation by forcing the war exercises against the north at whatever cost.
The GNP once again stands naked, revealing its treacherous colors as a pro-U.S. pet dog by persisting in the military maneuvers which would impose a holocaust of war upon the nation, under the plea of "military alliance" denounced by the people.
It must not go unnoticed that the GNP dare to cast a slur on the DPRK, abusing the public opinion opposed to the "Ulji Focus Lens" as "something playing into the hands of the north."
What the GNP seeks is to worsen the inter-Korean relations, what come may, by getting on the nerve of the army and people of the DPRK with such assertion. By this it has been vividly revealed that "the change of policy toward the north" advertised by it is nothing but a sheer lie to win over the popular sentiments. The pro-U.S. traitorous nature of the GNP remains and will remain utterly unchanged
All Koreans Called upon to Uphold Songun
Pyongyang, August 16 (KCNA) -- It is the sacred national duty of all Koreans to uphold Songun.
Rodong Sinmun today observes this in a signed article.
It goes on:
Songun serves as a powerful weapon for independently carving out the destiny of the country and nation and an invincible treasured sword for meeting the common requirements and interests of the nation.
Songun provides a guarantee for protecting the peace of the nation and achieving its independence now that foreign forces are working hard to prevent the Korean nation from independently carving out its destiny by mobilizing huge military force.
It is thanks to Songun that a nuclear war is averted on the Korean Peninsula and the DPRK's sky remains so clear and blue and the Korean people are known to be a proud and dignified one independently carving out their destiny despite the interference and challenge from any foreign force.
But for the Songun politics, Koreans would have neither greeted the June 15 era of reunification nor witnessed such eventful reality in which they are pushing ahead with the movement for independent reunification by their concerted efforts despite such threat of a war of aggression posed by foreign forces.
The ultimate aim sought by the DPRK in holding aloft the banner of Songun is to build a great prosperous powerful reunified country, the first of its kind in the nation's history spanning 5,000 years.
Practically every Korean has benefited from Songun.
History and reality go to clearly prove that a bright future of the nation depends on Songun.
National reunification and prosperity will come earlier when all Koreans add shine to the June 15 era of reunification under the uplifted banner of upholding Songun.

Among his fine art works are ones of socialist realism including "Developers of nature", "Whispering" and "Emotion of country village" and figure paintings full of love for the motherland and native land.
