Jangajji, Folk Dish
Pyongyang, June 4 (KCNA) -- Jangajji is one of the popular foodstuffs relished by the Koreans from olden times.
It is a dish of dried or salted vegetables and herbs pickled in bean sauce or bean paste or peppered bean paste, which is seasoned before taken.
It is also a side dish prepared by boiling fresh fish, hock and vegetables in bean sauce and seasoning them.
It contains various nutritious elements and stimulates appetite. It is good for health when taken normally.
It can be prepared with other materials than such vegetables as radish, unripe pepper, unripe garlic and cucumber.
Jangajji which is made through such processes as drying, slight boiling and salting can be made not only at home but also by industrial method.
Kimchi factories in Pyongyang including the Phyongchon and Taesong kimchi factories supply over 30 kinds of highly nutritious jangajji of mushroom, bellflower root and other materials.
These factories often sponsor jangajji shows and undertake well-planned work to increase its variety and put its production on the normal basis.
Torch of Pochonbo Blazes Still
Pyongyang, June 4 (KCNA) -- The flame that flared up in Pochonbo, a historic place, 71 years ago still implants deep in the minds of the Korean people the truth that Korea was alive and would be certainly crowned with victory if she fought.
The Japanese imperialists who occupied Korea in the early 20th century made all desperate efforts to exterminate the Korean nation and to keep her as their colony forever, loudly talking about "oneness of Japan and Korea", "one and the same ancestry and roots" and "turning Koreans into imperial subjects".
They committed plunder and murder right and left and were hell-bent on depriving the ruined Korean nation of their spoken and written language and their spirit.
Having keenly witnessed the misfortunes and sufferings imposed upon the Korean people, President Kim Il Sung decided to advance into the homeland in order to mete out punishment upon the hideous Japanese imperialists and to infuse life into the nation suffering from a nightmare.
The President, commanding the main units of the Korean People's Revolutionary Army, marched into the northern border area across the River Amnok in Juche 26 (1937).
At 10 p.m. on June 4, he fired his pistol into the nocturnal sky over Pochonbo. With the shot as a signal, his units stormed the Japanese imperialists' police substation, sub-county office, post office, forest conservation office, fire hall and other administrative centers, which were engulfed in flames.
"Declaration" and "Ten-point Programme of the Association for the Restoration of the Fatherland" authored by the President were pasted up here and there in the streets.
The news on the battle spread at home and abroad in the flash of an eye and Pochonbo became known in the world as a historic place.
Following the Pochonbo battle, the President victoriously carried out the battle of Mt. Kouyushui and the battle of Jiansanfeng, demonstrating the invincible might of the KPRA and instilling the conviction in sure victory into the minds of the trampled people.
The flames of Pochonbo will keep blazing in this land no matter how much water may flow under the bridge.
Japanese Reactionaries' Moves to Repeat Past Crimes under Fire
Pyongyang, June 4 (KCNA) -- The Japanese authorities are now reportedly contemplating submitting to the Diet a bill calling for making compensation to "bereaved families" of foreign lackeys of Japan who died in the past war of aggression fought to realize the "Greater East Asia Co-prosperity Sphere."
Rodong Sinmun today observes in a signed commentary carried in this regard: Such behavior of the Japanese authorities is a mockery and challenge to human conscience demanding the redemption of Japan's past wrongdoings and a move to repeat the crime-woven history.
Japan is a country which committed so many crimes in the past.
60 years have passed since Japan suffered a defeat in the war but it has neither honestly admitted the past crimes nor repented of them, to say nothing of making reparation for them. It is totally denying and distorting the history of the monstrous crimes that make even animals blush and persistently evading its responsibility for them.
Japan had insisted that the war for aggression fought to realize the "Greater East Asia Co-prosperity Sphere" was a "liberation war" but it is now mulling making compensation to the "bereaved families" of the above-mentioned lackeys who met dogs' deaths while participating in the above-said war.
The Japanese militarist forces seek to realize the old dream of "Greater East Asia Co-prosperity Sphere" in the 21st century at any cost as they have not abandoned even a moment such dream which they failed to do so in the past. Such wild ambition and attempt of those forces are evidenced by the facts that in recent years they have stepped up the joint development of the missile defence system with the U.S., made desperate efforts to build an independent missile shield under the pretext of coping with the "missile threat" from someone and gone the lengths of adopting a "basic law on the space" in a bid to justify the moves to militarize the space and pursue them as a policy.
Explicitly speaking, "the records of war crimes" committed by Japan in the past, the history stained with the blood shed by the Korean and other Asian peoples, can neither be written off nor forgotten despite the flow of the time and the tempest of the century.
Japan would be well advised to stand to reason and behave itself. This is good for itself.
U.S. Live Shell Firing Drill of New Type Weapons under Fire
Pyongyang, June 4 (KCNA) -- The recent live shell firing exercise of new type weapons staged by the U.S. trigger-happy forces in the area near the Military Demarcation Line is a deliberate and premeditated military provocation to the DPRK aimed at pushing the situation on the Korean Peninsula to the brink of war though there is a sign of positive development, observes Rodong Sinmun today in a signed commentary.
It goes on:
Peace-keeping on the Korean Peninsula and improved DPRK-U.S. relations depend on the U.S. abandonment of its hostile policy to stifle the DPRK.
It is attributable to the reckless moves of the U.S. war-like forces against the DPRK that the peninsula is one of the biggest hot spots in the world where the situation remains very tense and there is the constant danger of war.
The U.S. war-like forces openly disclose their intention to mount a preemptive nuclear attack on the DPRK and bluster that the future Korean war will be a nuclear war whenever an opportunity presents itself. This is a blatant challenge and provocation against the Korean people and the world progressives desirous of the peace, security and stability on the peninsula. For the detente on the peninsula the U.S. should refrain from any military action that may strain the situation.
The dialogue and negotiations between the DPRK and the U.S. are aimed at achieving the detente on the peninsula and improving the bilateral ties. But the U.S. trigger-happy forces are working hard to bedevil the bilateral relations and push the situation on the peninsula to an explosive phase by staging saber-rattling intended to escalate tension.
The aggravating situation on the peninsula is not beneficial to the U.S., either.
Neither military blackmail nor pressure would help the U.S. war-like forces break or weaken the firm faith of the people of the DPRK. They would be well advised to give up their foolish attempt to do harm to the DPRK by force of arms.
U.S. Branded as Human Rights Abuser and Violator of International Law
Pyongyang, June 4 (KCNA) -- An official of the U.S. Department of State, addressing an international meeting calling for banning the use of cluster bombs held in Dublin, Ireland, some days ago, jabbered that the ban on the use of cluster bombs is impossible as they are used for military purposes but asserted that "technological improvement" of them is enough for the present.
He threatened that the U.S. would not deploy its warships for peace-keeping operations in the future in case the treaty made at the Dublin meeting takes effect.
Minju Joson today observes in a signed commentary carried in this regard: The U.S. adamant insistence on the use of cluster bombs goes to prove that it is, indeed, the worst human rights abuser in the world and the crudest violator of international law.
It cites facts to prove that in the past the U.S. indiscriminately used cluster bombs causing mass killings, doing tremendous harm to humankind.
Precisely for this reason many countries of the world have demanded a total ban on the use of cluster bombs and international efforts have been increased to achieve the goal.
The ulterior aim sought by the U.S. in persistently insisting on the use of cluster bombs, lending no heed to the demand of the international community, is to continue stockpiling such weapons of mass destruction as cluster bombs in a bid to maintain a military edge and dominate the world by strength.
The U.S. stepped-up moves to develop ultra-modern weapons including laser weapons and intercontinental ballistic missiles and modernize them can be viewed as part of the measures to maintain military supremacy.
The world peace and security are gravely threatened by the above-said frantic moves of the U.S. to modernize the armed forces.
The U.S. dares not provoke the DPRK though it has already worked out a scenario for a war against the latter as its military forces remain strong.
The army and people of the DPRK will as ever increase its capability for self-defence in every way under the uplifted banner of Songun.
Lee Myung Bak Group Diplomacy to Garner Support to Its "Policy toward North" Ridiculed
Pyongyang, June 4 (KCNA) -- Of late the Lee Myung Bak group is busy making trips to other countries to garner support to its "policy toward the north."
But many countries except the U.S. and Japan said they hope for reconciliation and cooperation between the north and the south of Korea, paying no heed to its explanation about the policy. Referring to this, media say that Lee Myung Bak tried hard to elicit support for his "policy toward the north" only to become a laughing stock.
Terming this a natural outcome, Minju Joson Wednesday observes in a signed commentary:
The issue of the inter-Korean relations is, in fact, a reunification issue, an internal issue of the Korean nation.
It is only the Korean nation that is responsible for the north-south relations and national reunification. No foreign forces can replace the Korean nation in solving the issue of the inter-Korean relations and the reunification issue.
"No nukes, opening and 3,000 dollars" advocated by Lee Myung Bak as "a policy toward the north" is aimed to aggravate the north-south relations and bring them back to those in the past, far from improving them.
The DPRK side has already disclosed the treacherous, anti-reunification and dangerous nature of his "policy toward the north." Koreans at home and abroad are rejecting Lee's "no nukes, opening and 3,000 dollars," expressing full support and sympathy with the DPRK's reasonable stand. It is against this backdrop that even the conservative ruling forces in south Korea are openly asserting the need to modify the "policy toward the north."
As clearly proven by reality, Lee's humiliating diplomacy for soliciting approval and support for his "policy toward the north" while peddling the issue of the inter-Korean relations outside Korea will bring him nothing but ill-fame and shame as a traitor serving the outsiders with his back turned on the nation.
Lee Myung Bak had better retract the "policy toward the north" rejected by all Koreans and settle his urgent problem.
Renegotiations on American Beef Import Demanded in S. Korea
Pyongyang, June 4 (KCNA) -- The Democratic Labor Party and the Democratic Party for Unity and other opposition parties of south Korea held a meeting to denounce the enforcement of the ministerial official instructions and demand the renegotiations on beef import in front of the main building of the "National Assembly" in Youido, Seoul, on May 30.
Speakers at the meeting accused Lee Myung Bak of representing the U.S. stand only, paying no heed to the people's criticism, holding that it is better to send Lee to America as he is cracking down upon their resistance, terming it "anti-U.S. action".
They demanded the immediate retraction of the "official instructions", the renegotiations on beef import and the resignation of the whole Cabinet, etc.
A resolution read out at the meeting charged that what Lee Myung Bak has done is tantamount to abandoning the "presidential office", branding the negotiations conducted by the "government" with the U.S. on the beef import as a treacherous act of throwing away the quarantine right and the right to protect the safety of the people.
The "government" and the Grand National Party of south Korea should come out to retract the "official instructions" and hold total renegotiations on the beef import, though belatedly, and this is the only way to put the worst situation under control, the resolution warned.
That day the opposition parties were reported to have filed a suit demanding the nullification of the "official instructions" related to the hygienic conditions of the beef imported from the U.S.

The gifts are now on display in the International Friendship Exhibition.
Korean People's Struggle for Reunification Supported
Pyongyang, June 4 (KCNA) -- The International Liaison Committee for Reunification and Peace in Korea issued a bulletin on May 26.
The bulletin in an article cited facts to prove that south Koreans' struggle against traitor Lee Myung Bak's treacherous and pro-American policy is gaining in scope and strength.
The U.S. deployment of nuclear weapons in south Korea and its repeated threat of preemptive nuclear attack on the DPRK were the main reason why it built nuclear deterrent, the bulletin said, dismissing Lee's attempt to make a mess of the spectacular achievements made between the north and the south of Korea as futile.
It called on the world peace-loving forces to positively support all Koreans' struggle to implement to the letter the June 15 North-South Joint Declaration and the October 4 declaration, a programme for putting it into practice.
