Memorial Service for Pro-Democracy Martyrs Held in S. Korea

Pyongyang, October 1 (KCNA) -- Events to honor the memory of martyrs and other victims who fell in the struggle for the nation and democracy were held in Seoul on September 27 under the sponsorship of the committee for all-people memorial service of south Korea. Present there were over 500 members of civic and public organizations and political parties, including the Federation of Peasants Associations, the Reunification Meeting, the Unification Study Centre, the South Headquarters of the National Alliance for the Country's Reunification, the Federation of the Poor, the Teachers Union and the Democratic Labor Party, and bereaved families of martyrs and victims. There took place the 19th all-people meeting for memorial service and inheritance of martyrs' spirit. Speakers at the meeting condemned the Lee Myung Bak "government" for having made seizure and search for the Solidarity for Implementing the South-North Joint Declaration and checked a rally demanding the abrogation of the "National Security Law", which was due to be held in Thapgol Park in Seoul, and a street march of the participants in the memorial service on the same day. They declared that they would wage an undaunted struggle to check the globalization of the U.S. imperialist capital, the struggle launched by the martyrs for the nation and democracy, and fight to achieve the national reunification and build a society where independence and equality are ensured and the popular masses are emancipated, the desire of the martyrs. They called upon all the people to turn out in the struggle for great national unity and independence against the U.S. Then a resolution was read out, which said: We swear before the martyrs to spare no efforts to protect the people's right to live and their vital rights and achieve peace of the Korean Peninsula and courageously turn out in the unavoidable struggle against the Lee Myung Bak neo-liberal fascist regime. The meeting was followed by a candlelight cultural event. Meanwhile, the 3rd memorial service for women martyrs and victims who fell in the struggle for the nation and democracy was held at the entrance of Radio and Correspondence College under the co-sponsorship of the Women's Solidarity and the Council for the Solution of the Issue of the Volunteers Corps that day. |
