Pyongyang, October 7 (KCNA) -- The dancing art was on a high level in Koguryo (277 B.C. - 668 A.D.) which demonstrated its grandeur as a great power in the east. Dances reflecting the patriotic ideological sentiments and actual life of the people were widely created and disseminated in Koguryo. In those days the distinction between folk and palace dances became clear and the dances were professionalized and their styles diversified. Predominant in the dancing art were military dances full of vigor and spirit which represented the patriotism of the people. The military dances "Long Sword Dance", "Bow Dance" and "Armor Dance" well depicted the spirit of worshipping military arts of the Koguryo people regarding national defense as their most honorable duty. The military dances of Koguryo had a great influence on the development of the dances of the country for their popular character and high artistry. A lot of folk dances were created in Koguryo, which dealt with the sentiments and productive activities of the working people. Such dances as "Drum Dance" and "Janggo Dance" truthfully depicted the talent and life of the Koguryo people. And "Masque Dance" and "Masque Game" exposed the features of the time in the feudal society and bitterly satirized the anti-popular and corrupt life of the exploiter classes. The dances in those days were diverse in style, which included solo, duet and group dances, and well showed the characteristics of the Korean dances in which the movement of arms overwhelmed that of feet. The dances of Koguryo powerfully stimulated the development of the dancing art in the feudal age and made their way to the neighboring countries. It is a precious heritage of the country which typifies the peculiar features of the national dance. |
