The participants will compete in more than 30 events including football, basketball, volleyball, table tennis and track and field, divided into the sports group and the mass sports group in Pyongyang and other parts of the country.

Present at the opening ceremony were Kim Jung Rin, secretary of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea, and others, officials of working people's organizations, ministries and national institutions, sportspersons and working people.

Kwak Pom Gi, vice-premier of the Cabinet, made a congratulatory speech to be followed by an opening address by Pak Hak Son, chairman of the Physical Culture and Sports Guidance Commission.

At the end of the opening ceremony there took place a men's football match between the April 25 Sports Group and the Amnokgang Sports Group.
