Its foundation made it possible for the DPRK to protect the lives of the people, promote their health and welfare and take an active part in the international humanitarian activities.

True to its humanitarian mission, it is engaged in a wide range of activities such as preparations against disasters and emergency relief activities, massive public health and hygienic work for preventing all kinds of diseases and enhancing hygienic and cultural standards, social medical services, juvenile Red Cross activities, information and investigation activities and dissemination of the International Humanitarian Law among working people.

The society is making energetic efforts to improve the Red Cross activities in reliance upon broad voluntary service networks according to its own development plan and the "Strategy up to 2010" and "Singapore Declaration" of the International Federation of Red Cross.

It undertakes different activities to supply daily necessities and medicaments to disaster victims and remove consequences of damage such as restoration and building of water supply and sewage networks under the state plan for alleviating the pains of the victims and stabilizing their livelihood with the assistance and cooperation of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and various national organizations in case of flood, tidal wave and typhoon.

On the other hand, it cooperates with the International Committee of the Red Cross concerning prosthetic appliances to alleviate the inconveniences of the honored disabled soldiers and the disabled and serve conveniences in their living.

The adoption of the Law on the Red Cross Society in January 2007 provided a firm legal basis to carry on its activities according to the fundamental principle of the movement.

The society, as a member of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, is developing friendly and cooperative relations with international Red Cross organizations and national organizations of Red Cross and Red Crescent.

The DPRK Red Cross Society joined the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies on May 11, 1956.
