Pyongyang, November 15 (KCNA) -- The Press Headquarters of the South Side Committee for Implementing the June 15 Joint Declaration in south Korea released a statement on Nov. 10 urging the "Grand National Party" to immediately stop the move to increase the function of the repressive mechanism.
The statement accused the GNP of submitting to the "National Assembly" a "bill calling for revising the law on Intelligence Service" aimed at radically expanding the scope of its activities and increasing its function on Nov. 7.
If the bill is allowed to pass through the NA, the service will openly perpetrate politically motivated investigation and human rights abuses against the opposition parties and civic and public organizations, it noted, and continued:
Since the emergence of the Lee Myung Bak regime the police crackdown upon people has been further intensified and the "Intelligence Service", in particular, has exercised unlimited power just as what the "Central Intelligence Agency" and the "Security Planning Board" did to commit hideous crimes during the past period of fascist dictatorship, sparking off public criticism.
It is absolutely intolerable to further increase the function of the service at this time.
The reckless action of the GNP is designed to prevent the recurrence of candlelight demonstrations and, furthermore, intensify the politically motivated investigation, etc. in a bid to create a terror-ridden atmosphere in the society.
