Pyongyang, November 25 (KCNA) -- The U.S. is contemplating transferring about 8,000 marines present in Okinawa and their families to Guam and converting it into a military fortress in the Pacific in the period from 2010 to 2014, according to foreign press reports.
This means the U.S. declared at home and abroad its intention not to change its policy of military intervention and engagement in the Asia-Pacific region even in the years to come.
Minju Joson Tuesday observes this in a signed commentary.
It is the Asia-Pacific region to which the U.S. attaches importance in the course of the world-wide relocation of its armed forces, it points out, and says:
Guam is regarded by the U.S. as very important at present for keeping the Asia-Pacific region under its military control and more smoothly carrying out its military intervention in the region.
The present U.S. administration is converting the island into a strategic stronghold indispensable for the U.S. execution of its strategy for world domination in the new century after reexamining the geographical advantages of the island and its strategic position in implementing its Asian strategy.
The ulterior aim sought by the U.S. in its moves to convert Guam into a military fortress in the Pacific by the year 2014 is to reinforce the island as a giant military strategic stronghold and massively hurl aggressor armed forces there when necessary and thus ensure an unchallenged military edge of the U.S. forces in the Asian region.
The U.S. would be well advised to respond to the demand of the world community for peace and detente, away from its anachronistic military confrontational viewpoint.
