Standing in the van of the great revolutionary upsurge are the workers of Kangson with ardent patriotism to prop up the country with big steel pillars.

Right after the liberation of the country President Kim Il Sung said that steel was needed to build a new democratic country. In response to his call, they repaired within only two months an electric furnace destroyed by the Japanese imperialists and made the first teeming, thus stirring up the militant morale and revolutionary enthusiasm of the people in the efforts for building a new country.

Following the Plenary Meeting of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) in December Juche 45 (1956) where the President made a speech calling for effecting an upsurge in the socialist construction, he called on the working class of Kangson and said that ten thousand more tons of steel would be greatly helpful to the country and that the difficult situation of the revolution should be bridged over, he trusting them and they trusting him. His deep trust gave birth to the legendary Chollima (winged horse) in Kangson.

The workers there, who raised the first torch of the Chollima movement, effected a great upswing in production, withstanding all sorts of bottlenecks and difficulties. In the course of this, they wrought a miracle of rolling 120,000 tons of steel bars at the blooming mill with a rated capacity of 60,000 tons.

They, always true to the leadership of the WPK, have made uninterrupted creation and innovation century after century.

They successfully built a Korean-style UHP electric arc furnace, which may be called the core of the steel industry, by themselves last year when the 60th birth anniversary of the DPRK was celebrated.

To build the above-said furnace, which is said only its design would take more than three years, was a difficult undertaking the impossibility of which was greater than the possibility under the present condition where everything is short and difficult.

However, the workers in Kangson, with a firm determination to make another revolutionary leap forward in the steel production in the spirit and the fortitude of the great Chollima upsurge after the war, built the UHP electric arc furnace in a few months with their own design, technology and efforts, opening up a bright vista for boosting the steel production rapidly.

Holding higher the torch of a new revolutionary surge kindled by General Secretary Kim Jong Il while giving field guidance to the Chollima Steel Complex in December last year, they are registering big successes from the first day work in the new year.
