The sports contest, an annual event, marks an important occasion in more significantly commemorating the Day of the Sun and developing the nation's sports technique.

During the contest its participants will compete in nearly 40 events including football, basketball, boxing, shooting and speed skating to be held in Pyongyang, Sariwon, Hamhung, Phyongsong, Samjiyon and other places.

Present at the opening ceremony were Kim Jung Rin, secretary of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea, officials concerned and sportspersons.

An opening address was made by Pak Hak Son, chairman of the Physical Culture and Sports Guidance Commission, to be followed by speeches .
