Pyongyang, April 20 (KCNA) -- Sugar cane is cultivated in the reclaimed tideland in Onchon County, South Phyongan Province, DPRK. It was a common practice in the past to leave the reclaimed tideland fallow for a certain period until it was desalted. Onchon County undertook deep-going researches in cooperation with competent scientists to obtain a crop suitable to the conditions of reclaimed tideland. Through repeated tests it succeeded in obtaining a new strain of sugar cane highly productive and suitable to the local conditions and began growing it. Last year it harvested one thousand and several hundred tons of sugar cane in the reclaimed tideland to get a large amount of raw sugar. It was equivalent to the quantity obtained from hundreds of tons of grain. |
