Historic Conference for Great National Unity

Pyongyang, April 23 (KCNA) -- The Korean people with deep emotion are looking back upon the undying feats performed by President Kim Il Sung who devoted his whole life to the national unity and reunification and provided a solid foundation for realizing the cause of the independent reunification on the occasion of the 61st anniversary of the historic Joint Conference of Representatives of Political Parties and Public Organizations in North and South Korea.

The conference was held in Pyongyang from April 19 to 23, Juche 37 (1948) on the initiative of the President and under his guidance. It was a historic nation-wide meeting for achieving the great national unity under the banner of reunification and patriotism and saving the destiny of the country and the nation.

At that time the U.S. imperialists who had occupied south Korea by force of arms and their lackeys laid an obstacle on the way of the Korean people for the building of a sovereign and independent state with the treacherous scheme to fabricate "separate elections and government" there.

The President with a penetration into the prevailing situation convened the conference for the purpose of bridging over the crisis and building an independent reunified country by dint of the great national unity.

At the conference the President set forth it as the most important political task for the Korean nation to foil the "separate elections and government" scheme in south Korea and to establish a unified democratic government so as to reunify the country. And he advanced the policy of rallying all the Koreans, who were concerned about the destiny of the country and the nation, irrespective of party grouping, affiliation and political opinion.

He stressed that all the patriotic forces should be rallied to frustrate the aggressive attempt of the U.S. imperialists without fail, noting that only unity could ensure victory.

It is a fine fruition of the President's independent policy of national reunification, idea of great national unity and great all-embracing politics that representatives from most of the political parties and public organizations and even obstinate anti-communist nationalists gathered together in the broad national meeting for discussing important affairs of the nation except a handful of traitors to the nation under so complex situation right after the liberation and reached a unanimous agreement to wage a nation-wide anti-U.S. struggle.

With President Kim Il Sung's outstanding idea of great national unity and exploits he performed throughout his life as precious heritage, the Korean people, under the leadership of Kim Jong Il, will certainly accomplish the cause of national reunification, holding aloft the banner of the "By our nation itself".
