The programme clarifies all the principles and ways for realizing great national unity and its cause including the general target of the great unity of the whole nation and the idea that whoever is concerned for the destiny of the nation should unite as one nation and pave the road to the reunification together, transcending all differences.

The President convened the historic April joint conference of the north and the south after the liberation of the country to decisively smash the move of the U.S. imperialists and their followers to fabricate "separate election and government" for the purpose of national division. In each period and each stage of the developing situation and reunification movement since then, he put forward reasonable proposals and took many measures for achieving the great unity of the nation and creating a peaceful environment for the national reunification.

Entering the 1970s, he made a breach in the dialogue and negotiations between the north and the south which had been in a deadlock and saw to it that the July 4 North-South Joint Statement was adopted, the main content of which is the three principles of national reunification, thus bringing about a turning phase for reunification.

Having advanced national reunification as the supreme task of the nation, the President set forth the proposal for founding the Democratic Federal Republic of Koryo and the ten-point programme of the great unity of the whole nation in the 1980s and the 1990s. He, thus, provided an almighty weapon for the cause of reunification to be taken consistently by the nation.

He, with warm love for the fellow countrymen, boundless generosity and magnanimity, led the people of all strata who aspired after reunification to the efforts for the sacred cause of national reunification. Saying that the greatest gift he would give to the nation is the reunified country, he approved a document related to reunification and left his autograph on it in the last moments of the great life when his heart stopped beating.

The sacred cause of reunification, a lifelong desire of the President, is being carried forward brilliantly by General Secretary Kim Jong Il.

Kim Jong Il formulated the three principles of national reunification, the ten-point programme of the great unity of the whole nation and the proposal for founding the Democratic Federal Republic of Koryo set forth by the President as the three charters for national reunification. He also put forward the five-point policy for great national unity, thus brightly lighting the way for achieving the national unity and reunification.

The Korean nation will strictly adhere to and thoroughly implement the idea, line and policy for the great unity of the nation, which are associated with the lofty patriotism and will of the peerlessly great men, and achieve national reunification without fail.
