Pyongyang, June 12 (KCNA) -- Large anti-"government" rallies took place across south Korea on June 10 on the occasion of the 22nd anniversary of the June Popular Resistance. The rallies brought together more than 300,000 members of civic and public organizations and opposition parties, workers, peasants, students, women, intellectuals, media persons and others. An "all-people rally for inheriting the June resistance and restoring democracy" was held in the plaza of the Seoul City Office with at least 150,000 people from all walks of life attending. They were holding in their hands candlelight and slogan boards reading "Regime of man-killers, step down," etc. Speakers said at the rally that the Lee Myung Bak regime has pursued a fascist dictatorial rule, violating democracy, since he came to power, calling upon all of the people to turn out in the struggle to root out the poisonous plants through the second June resistance. The rally issued the "four-point demand for restoring democracy," i.e. a stop to the strong-arm rule and policy favoring big businesses and the moves to enact evil laws for violating democracy, deteriorating people's living and abusing human rights and actions to make a switchover in the "state administration" and improve the inter-Korean relations. Then a resolution was read out. It warned that if Lee persists in reinforcing his unilateral fascist dictatorial rule despite of the demand of the people from all walks of life, they will wage a sustained widespread people's resistance movement. The resolution said that as an immediate task they would stage an all-people signature campaign till July 10 to have the "four-point demand" met. At the end of the rally, the participants staged a demonstration. Prior to the rally, various organizations including the Council for Inheriting the June Resistance and Restoring Democracy, the People's Council for Livelihood and Democracy and the Joint Council of Civic and Public Organizations held a meeting to commemorate the 22nd anniversary of the June Popular Resistance at which they called upon all the progressive movement organizations to carry on the struggle for achieving democracy and the country's reunification. An "appeal to the people" was read out at the meeting. On the same day, anti-"government" rallies were held in Pusan, Taejon, Kwangju, Taegu and other places. In another development, the Student Committee of the Democratic Labor Party on June 6 issued an appeal calling upon the students to unite and take the lead in the struggle to judge the dictatorship and the South Headquarters of the Pan-national Alliance for Korea's Reunification and the Action Headquarters of the 17th-term south Korean Federation of University Councils on June 7 and the South Headquarters of the Pan-national Alliance of Youth and Students for Korea's Reunification on June 9 issued statements calling upon all the people to turn out in the struggle to judge the Lee dictatorial regime and achieve the country's reunification. The movement for issuing declarations on the situation denouncing the Lee group of traitors is gaining in scope and strength in different parts of south Korea on the occasion of the 22nd anniversary of the June Popular Resistance. |
