Speakers at the rally referred to the dangerous situation on the Korean Peninsula where people can not predict when they will meet a holocaust of war.

Under this situation people from all walks of life got together to urgently demand the Lee Myung Bak "government" convert its hostile policy towards the DPRK full of confrontation and mistrust into a policy of reconciliation, cooperation and peace, they said.

Noting that after the emergence of the Lee Myung Bak regime the south-north relations faced a stern trial, they denounced the conservative ruling forces for trying to obliterate the successes achieved in the way for reconciliation and cooperation of the nation, totally denying the June 15 joint declaration and the October 4 declaration.

Lee Myung Bak should not foster a crisis, groundlessly taking issue with the DPRK but respect for the south-north joint declarations and clarify his intention to honestly implement them, they stressed.

They called upon those who ardently desire for national reunification, not for the confrontation and mistrust, to turn out in the struggle for adhering to and implementing the above-mentioned declarations with concerted efforts irrespective of the religious belief, political view and faction.

On June 13 organizations at all levels including the south Korean Confederation of Trade Unions, the Solidarity for Progress, the Solidarity for Reunification in Seoul, the People for Achieving Peace and Reunification, the preparatory committee for the south Korean Federation of Youth Organizations and opposition parties held a "cultural event for independent reunification" in Seoul.
