Pyongyang, August 17 (KCNA) -- The Taegyedo tideland constructors in North Phyongan Province are striving to create a great creature which will shine along with the Songun era. This area which had been part of the sea till several years ago has turned into cultivated land and large quantities of rice been harvested in the paddy field every year. It is a precious fruition and demonstration of inexhaustible strong will of the constructors to build a thriving nation in this land without fail with their own efforts and technology. On August 21, Juche 86 (1997), an unexpected strong storm and tidal wave heavily damaged the dam of Taegyedo tideland. It washed away more than 9,800 meters of dam in four sections. However, the constructors rebuilt the dam in the three sections out of the four. It was most difficult to build dam No. 3, the last section. A big eddy caused by the high or low tide in a narrow section washed away 32m-long dam in a twinkle and then 25m a few days later. Through the damaged section 35 meters deep, 250 million tons of seawater came in and out twice a day, digging deeper the beds of both sides. There was an opinion that it was impossible to dam it without shutting out the gravitation of the moon. This once drove the constructors to despair. Full of confidence and optimism on the future and indomitable fighting will, however, the constructors rose again and fought against the raging waves, applying new construction methods in the revolutionary spirit of self-reliance. Thanks to their death-defying struggle, the project for damming the section was concluded with success on June 11, 2005. General Secretary Kim Jong Il visited the Taegyedo tideland reclamation site some time ago and highly appreciated them as brave conquerors of sea and indomitable fighters who expanded the land of the country, buffeting rough waves. Encouraged by this, the builders are striving harder for the completion of the tideland reclamation project. |
