It was founded and has developed as a famous sports team in the country under the care of the peerlessly great men.

Hong Sok Yong, chief of the team, told KCNA as follows:

Busy as he was with building a new country after the liberation of the country, President Kim Il Sung saw to it that the team was formed on September 19, Juche 36 (1947) as the first of its kind in Korea.

And he had visited our sports team to inspire athletes to display their might in national and international games to the full.

During the hard-fought Fatherland Liberation War, he recalled athletes from the front and provided all conditions for sports training. In the postwar period, too, he led the athletes energetically to catch up with the advanced countries in some sports events.

When they returned home after winning signal successes in international matches, he was pleased with their successes more than anybody else and bestowed warm love and benevolence on them who demonstrated the dignity and honor of the motherland.

The sports team is in the heyday of its development under the wise guidance of leader Kim Jong Il.

In September 1962 when he called at the sports team, he gave important instructions that would be served as guidelines in the work of the team from the issue of holding championship in international and national contests to the issue of training reserves. He indicated game tactics, seeing games of its athletes on scores of occasions.

Now its athletes are stepping up training with a goal to hold world championship in football, marathon, wrestling, boxing and weightlifting and other events.
