President Kim Il Sung saw to it that Tangun, founding father of the Korean nation who had been known to be a mere myth for a long period of time, was found out. He personally chose the site for the mausoleum on the spot and examined the final lay-out for the mausoleum in the last period of his great life.

Under the deep care of General Secretary Kim Jong Il the mausoleum was successfully reconstructed in less than a year.

There are at the mausoleum the Monument to the Reconstructed Mausoleum of King Tangun, sculptures of his sons and subjects, stone sculptures of Korean tigers, four dagger pagodas describing Pipha-shaped dagger, a symbolic weapon of Ancient Korea, the main chamber and others.

At least 1.64 million people from all walks of life and school youth and children, personages of all circles in south Korea, overseas Koreans and foreign guests have visited the mausoleum over the last 15 years since it was reconstructed.
